Augusto dos Anjos was a Brazilian poet and teacher born in 1884 who helped pioneer modernist poetry in Brazil. He wrote poems influenced by symbolism and parnasianism that expressed themes of melancholy, pessimism, and an obsession with death. His work progressed through phases from less original works to more complex and reflective poems that addressed spirituality and the universe. He published his only book "Eu" in 1912 and died in 1914.
