Sociedade sustentável:
dever de todos
A sustainable society: the duty of everybody
O
meio ambiente e a sustentabilidade são o foco do
utilização racional da água; a redução dos desperdícios;
dade e a conservação do meio ambiente.
T
heenvironmentandsustainabilityarethefocusofthe
debate for scientists, researchers, non-governmental
organizations, governments and society. All come
together to discuss, raise suggestions and point out
solutions that can bring balance to slow the destruction we
experienced on planet Earth.
Climate change, the crisis in water supply due to lack
of rain, the destruction of the rivers are a clear prove that
unless we change our attitudes towards nature, the planet
will come to an end so that life as we know today may no
longer exists.
It is obvious the conclusion that the conservation of the
environment and sustainability depend on public policies
that should be the primary goal to be achieved by any
ruler.
Simultaneouslywiththe governmentactionswe allneed
to be aware that there are hidden dangers all interventions
we do to the environment. It is urgent the application of
practices that ensure sustainability in everyday actions
such as proper disposal of household waste, the protection
of water sources, rational use of water, waste reducing, the
end of the domestic sewage discharges into rivers and other
harmful and irresponsible environmental practices.
Attitudes such as planting trees, garbage recycling,
selective collection, the use of parts usually discarded food
as bark, leaves and stems, as well as orientated activities
and information for all citizens of the importance of
change of purpose and engage in these actions and simple
solutions are essential for promoting sustainability and
environmental conservation.
7. 6
hoje temos gratuitamente, no futuro, talvez tenhamos
chamada a participar.
impacto no meio ambiente.
Caring for the environment requires a force task for a
definite change of habits. Humanity cannot disregard the
signs of saturation that nature gives us. Flooding, pollution,
destruction, hurricanes, the depletion of scarce resources
and deaths are the consequences of the lack of awareness
and indifference of man with nature.
Even what is abundant now may end if there is no
necessary care. The population and consumption increase,
contributed to greater removal of natural resources. The
future depends on a new perspective on the priorities for
our lives. What we have today for free in the future, may
cost us a very high price.
The Yearbook Land of Wealth 2013 edition aimed to
to know in the municipalities of the region of Campos
Gerais what actions are being taken to promote a
sustainable environment for all. Governmental actions turn
to environmental education, reforestation, preservation
of natural and native forests, springs, fountains, basins,
new alternatives for agriculture, final implementation of
selective collection and proper disposal of waste, among
others.
In this scenario, the whole society is called to participate.
From the youngest to the oldest. The projects disseminate
information and knowledge with the aim of raising
awareness about the urgency of new attitudes in our daily
lives. The focus is forming a new society, less selfish and
more fraternal, where the citizens think about what’s best
not only for themselves, but for everyone else.
It is important to educate everyone to understand that
what everyone does at the present moment will have an
impact in the environment in a near future. The math is
simple: If everybody returns the biggest part of what’s
been used back to the nature, more opportunities will be
created, promoting welfare and harmony. Only with the
commitmentoftheentiresocietyitwillbe possible ensuring
a better life for ourselves and for future generations.

Lixo que gera renda
Trash that generates income
coleta seletiva e o reaproveitamento do material
zadas. Atualmente, são recolhidas 15 toneladas de lixo
reciclável por mês. Os recursos obtidos contribuem para
aumentar a renda familiar.

is not trash itself. The selective
collection and recycling of recyclable material is one of the
most important actions in the defense and preservation of
the environment and natural resources.
The recyclable waste collectors give an important
contribution to society, because besides performing the
activity for income and support their families, they are
social agents that seek to improve the cities in which they
live, taking trash out of the streets and public places This
trash can be recycled giving the correct waste disposal.
Municipalities are increasingly subsidizing this activity
and valuing the role of informal collectors. The government
has invested in infrastructure for the formation of collectors
cooperatives, offering further support in the training of
these professionals. The goal is to move families out of
informality the ones that are able to increase income
through organized and professional activities.
FromtheworkofcollectingandrecyclingArapotifamilies
make their living and contribute to the organization of a
better city. The Arapoti Association of Recyclable Materials -
ACOMAR has worked since 2010 and operates in urban and
rural areas in collecting, sorting and selling recyclables. To
ensure safety, the collectors work with Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE) and wear uniforms provided by the City.
All material is sold to specialized companies. Currently,
15 tons of recyclables are collected a month. These actions
help to increase family income.
The City of Arapoti also seeks to develop projects in
Acomar to provide the collectors some cultural activities,
education and leisure.

Preservando arroios
Protecting the streams
rurais. Em breve, atuará na compostagem dos resíduos
orgânicos domiciliares. Para manter a organização, lim-
peza pública, fortalecer a educação ambiental e a coleta
seletiva, foram instalados conjuntos de coletores seleti-
vos nas cores vermelho (plástico), azul (papel/papelão),
amarelo (metal), verde (vidro), marrom (orgânico) e cinza
(rejeito).
Outras ações envolvem a destinação correta do óleo
As
iniciativas envolvem poder público e comunidade.

problems caused by pollution of the stream.
Residents near the creek have been oriented by the
Department of Environment to properly dispose garbage in
containers or bins so that the collection truck can remove
and properly allocate the waste, preventing it from being
thrown on the banks of the stream.
There will also be a campaign for the selective collection
in the districts covered by the Lageado Stream. The goal is to
make the residents learn to separate the garbage correctly
and send the recyclable material to the Environmental
Cooperative of Carambeí (Coopam), responsible for
municipal waste sorting. The program will have the support
of the private sector.
The Coopam is responsible for the selective collection
around the entire city perimeter, including some rural areas.

keep the the organization, public sanitation, strengthen
environmental education and selective collection, collector
sets were installed in red (plastic), blue (paper / cardboard),

Other actions involve the proper disposal of cooking oil,
urban landscaping and planting native trees on the banks
of the River São João which has already been diagnosed
and is the source that supplies Carambeí. The initiatives
involve government and the community.

A
Paralelamente,
capacitação assume o gerenciamento do sistema garan-
tindo tarifas com valores acessíveis aos usuários. O progra-
T
he Environment
Municipal Board
of Castro in partnership with
SANEPAR and City Environment Council, with support of
Emater created the Environmental Protection Area - APA
source of the River St Cristovão, a small watershed that
houses two water surface that supply headquarters.
A diagnosis of the area is being carried out, through the
datasurvey ontheuseandoccupationofland,highlighting
the mapping of springs. In parallel, environmental
education activities for communities located within APA
and headquarters are being held.
Another initiative is to lease areas of permanent
preservation by donating wire for fencing these very
same areas for smallholders, who are being registered to
eventually be financially compensated for environmental
services.
A quality monitoring is done to water of the watershed
and the Management Board of this conservation unit works
for the elaboration of a management plan of the water
in an attempt to reconcile the economic activities and
preservation of micro drainage basin. The City is also
holding a contest with High School for the preparation of
environmental atlas of the APA.
A rural sanitation program of the City prioritizes the
implantation of alternative water supply systems in rural
communities. Through partnerships, technicians analyze the
supply of fountains, elaborate projects and deploy systems.
The community helps in network deployment and after
the training takes over management of the system ensuring
affordable fares for users. The program reduces the rates
of waterborne diseases and improves quality of life in rural
communities.
The program also forsees for the protection of water
in these communities that are served by the collection of
recyclables, for the Association of Collectors of Castro.

Planning to grow
G
uamiranga é um Município com apenas 16 anos
de emancipação e quer crescer de forma estru-
turada. A preocupação com o meio ambiente
equilibrado norteia o planejamento, elaboração e execu-
ção de projetos para um progresso sustentável.
A administração municipal implantou a coleta seleti-
envolvendo toda a comunidade escolar.
O resultado é a mudança
tado no aterro sanitário.
Básico para ampliar o abastecimento de água potável;
esgotamento sanitário; limpeza urbana e manejo de resí-
duos sólidos, e ainda drenagem e manejo de águas plu-
viais urbanas. Outro importante projeto é a construção

work involving the whole school community. Encouraging
best practice of separating the material that can be recycled
generates awards for students who learn the importance
of reuse of various materials. The juvenile population of
the state and municipal schools, which totals about two
thousand people are directly engaged in environmental
issues and disseminates the idea in their homes. The result
is a change in habits and expansion project for the whole
community. Furthermore, decreasing the amount of waste
deposited in the landfill.
Other actions have already been designed with the aim
to preserve the environment and provide a better future
for the population. Among them, there are the Sanitation
Plan to expand the supply of drinking water, sanitation,
urban sanitation and solid waste management, and further
drainage and management of urban stormwater. Another
important project is the construction of a new landfill,
according to the environmental legislation.

The council also plans to implement a seedling nursery
to produce essential native seedlings that will be used to
revitalize damaged areas on the landscaping works and
greening the city.

A

destination of all waste produced, the ‘dumps’. In order to
conform to environmental standards, public administrators
have deadlines to build controlled landfills and proper
disposal of all waste produced in cities.
One of the most important and essential actions for
the garbage problem is awareness for the recycling of
various materials. Under this view, there is the role of the
professional gathering.
All these materials in the streets, whether for individual
collector, or as group the work has already been organized.
In Imbaú, an agreement between the City Hall and the
Association of Recyclable Materials - Acamari, improved
working conditions for families who live on recycling.
With the partnership, Imbaú moves forward to the
determinations of the National Plan for Solid Waste to
subsidizerecyclingprojectsin2015.Throughtheagreement,
the City will make monthly transferences totaling R$ 30,000
for the association. The money will be used to structure the
entity with the purchase of equipment to further optimize
and expand the collection.
The next challenge of the Municipal Environment is
environmental education for the entire population. The
separation of waste in homes and businesses make the job
of collectors more productive and reduce the accumulation
of garbage in the landfill.
The idea will also be taken to schools through lectures,
seminars, involving students, faculty and staff, and to
encourage the preservation of the environment and nature
through the separation of garbage.

Mutirão do eletrônico
Electronic collective effort
A
população de Imbituva avança a passos largos
na reciclagem. Todo o lixo eletrônico gerado é
também destinado de forma correta. O trabalho
ambiente.
a reciclagem.
No ambiente escolar a reciclagem é incentivada
permanentemente.
Todas as escolas
T
he population of
Imbituva is going
forward when it comes to
recycling. All e-waste generated is also aimed correctly. The
work done by the City through the Municipal Environment
department in partnership with the private sector shows
positive results in the caring for the environment.
The mobilization for the “Collective Effort of junk” is
giving a different destination for the electronic waste that
would stop in the landfill, or often in rivers, caused change
of habit. This kind of trash is now collected at various points
throughout the city. Later on the material is properly stored
in an e appropriate location to be sent for recycling.
Coupled to this new allocation of junk, now that
the residents know that this material can be disposed
of in appropriate locations, the department invests in
environmental education, promotes lectures in schools
in order to raise awareness and encourage public school
students. The propagation is also carried on local radio and
on billboards around town.
In the school environment, recycling is encouraged
permanently. A competition is held among establishments
with partner companies, will award schools that collect
the largest amount to be reused in a month. All schools are
involved in the venture, which has more than two thousand
students.
The goal is to make people aware about the importance
ofrecyclingbeyondtheschoolwalls.Withthemultiplication
of information by students, the idea is to involve the biggest
part of the community.

Ipiranga more Sustainable
A
do agronegócio. E cada vez mais são neces-
sárias alternativas de produção. O projeto “Ipiranga +
sustentabilidade.
O programa tem financiamento e crédito do Banco
do Brasil e do Sicredi.
A
gricultureisasector
where sustainability
is essential to the success of
agribusiness. Production alternatives are more and more
needed. The project “Ipiranga more Sustainable” developed
bytheMunicipalAgriculturalandDevelopmentdepartment
arose from the need to generate extra income to producers
of tobacco, in a small space where they can grow vegetables
and generate a weekly income. Some producers believe
in the profitability offered by horticulture and replaced
tobacco to greenery.
One of the aims of the program is to create crop
diversification in the region and eventually install small
family agribusinesses, keeping the producer in the field with
dignity and a compatible income with the vast amount of
work out of their daily lives.
Smallholders have the support and planning of the
Municipal Agricultural and Development department to
ensure the initial marketing until they themselves can
seek new markets such as the certification of organic
products that besides being more profitable, contribute to
the environment and sustainability.
The program has funding and credit of the Bank of
Brazil and Sicredi. During marketing phase there is work
with the National Supply Company (Conab) through the
Food Acquisition Program, partnerships with the Food
Bank, foreign markets for major networks and even
the formation of the Agricultural Cooperative Ipiranga.
Technical assistance actions are in tune with the technical
team of Emater that develops rural extension activities.
Currently, half of the four thousand tobacco producers
are included in the Ipiranga more sustainable project.

Springs and clean water
I
mprescindível para a sobrevivência da raça humana,
a água, embora seja um recurso renovável e abun-
dante, nem sempre é de qualidade. A contamina-
ção decorre, principalmente, de atitudes incorretas do
homem no meio ambiente.
e cimento. O trabalho é desenvolvido em parceria com
o Colégio Florestal Estadual Presidente Costa e Silva e a
Universidade do Centro Oeste (Unicentro).
E
ssential for the
survival of the human
race, the water, although it is a
renewable and abundant source, is does not always have
quality. The contamination is mainly due to wrong attitudes
of man to the environment.
The lack of rural sanitation is a major cause of health
hazardsanddegradationofwaterresources.Here,thespring
water is used as the source for household consumption. To
preserve water resources, coupled with the pursuit of quality
of water consumed by residents mainly on farms, the
Department of Environment of Irati develops a protection
technique applied to the springs using soil and cement. The
work is developed in partnership with the State Forestry
College President Costa e Silva and the University of the
Midwest (UNICENTRO).
Using material present in the property, the recuperation
and protection technique of springs based soil cement
has high durability and is self-sustaining. This technique
makes a good sealing possible, preventing the water from
the spring to get in contact with external factors that may
contaminate the water. This method does not harm the
environment and contributes to the preservation of water
resources.
The result attracted the attention of students from
various universities, producers and was taken to private
property, because even in places where there is no
sanitation, rehabilitation of springs by this method ensures
water quality.
The department identifies the sources that can be
treated with this technique and assists the implementation
of the project. The work can be completed in one day. Clean
water ensures better health for families, and also increases
the quality of products irrigated with clean water and free
of chemicals and contamination.
