seu projeto “Vision of the future” (1996), cujo objetivo era
tecnologias. Cineastas como James Cameron, têm oferecido
à comunidade científica uma contribuição singular.
Some believe that changes are motivated by external factors.
For these people, the future is something probable, it is
evident that something will happen; or possible, may happen,
depending on the expectations and uncertainties. But there is
a third future, of which we may not be aware, the desirable or
preferred future. For these people, the future is an unexplored
space and with creativity + ingenuity, we can shape it with
ideas, concepts and realities. As so well Anthony Dunne and
Fiona Raby point out in their book “Speculative Everything”.
More important than idealizing futures, is bringing them to
the present by experimenting. Since the 1970s, Shell has
announced in the end of oil and placed among its objectives
the search for alternative sources of energy; becoming one of
the forerunners in the development of clean technologies like
wind or solar power. The same applies to Philips and its project
“Vision of the future” (1996), whose objective was to foresee
the impact of its product portfolio on modern life. With this
project, the company innovated not only in the way of creating
products targeted at the future, but also in the way in which its
design team would work from that moment on.
The future has arrived so fiction and reality no longer are
split apart. The cinema, which in other times fed the common
imagination, moved from speculator to creator of new
technologies. Filmmakers like James Cameron, have offered
a unique contribution to the scientific community.

empreendedorismo típica do movimento hacker e
A própria
Entender tais movimentos ambientais, sociais e
social.
(assista Inspired by Glass: Realizing the Vision Symposium)
(marca, produtos e serviços), estimulando não somente a
“I must create a system or be
enslaved by another mans; I
will not reason and compare:
my business is to create.”
William Blake

The technology designed by Cameron to search for the wreck
of the Titanic was later used (in 2012) by National Geographic
in the Deepsea Challenger to explore the bottom of the sea
at a depth of 35800 feet, the deepest point ever reached by
equipment at that time.
Thanks to the hybridization technology + design +
entrepreneurship typical of the hacker movement and
potentialized in recent times, anticipating the future has
become a must. In the late 1970s, young nerds in some
garage in the Silicon Valley or in the dorm of some North
American West Coast University designed (or better,
speculated) what we today know as Microsoft, Apple or
Facebook. The government’s own agency DARPA (Defense
Advanced Research Projects Agency) has made possible
thousands of inventions based on future visions.
When dealing with futures, in general, we deal with the big
issues for society or the planet. , The journey may lead us
to finding territories, spaces for activity (white spaces)
or concepts of the world that can help us operate from a
specific standpoint, connecting signals and trends emerging
in society, with the intent of promoting a debate with more
awareness about how we want to live our coming days.
Understanding these environmental, social and technology
movements from their origins all the way to their impacts
on the future becomes fundamental for any social planner.
Speculate, throw oneself ahead, draw paths, show options and
indications have become inherent activities to good design.
It is exactly in this exercise, speculative and provocative,
between fiction and reality, that a gap opens allowing people
and institutions to explore alternative paths, creating actions
like the one from Corning, where the creative team has been
brought together to create feasibility for projects (watch
Inspired by Glass: Realizing the Vision Symposium) speculated
in their famous video “A day made of glass”.
There we see a new way of building a corporate vision, strong
enough to guide the entire business strategy (brand, products
and services), stimulating not only the solution of problems,
but rethinking the entire context.
