Notas do Editor
Job Evaluation is the systematic process of determining the relative worth of jobs to establish which jobs should be paid more than others within an organization. The method of comparison selected for use by the organization is a strong determining factor in the outcome of job evaluation. Common methods of comparison include: Job Ranking System . This is the simplest and oldest system, which arrays jobs on the basis of their relative worth. Variations include listing all the responsibilities and duties of each job by order of importance or paired-comparison ranking, which uses a table of other jobs with similar duties to assign a ranking. The basic weakness of the job-ranking system is that its measures of job worth are not very refined. Job Classification System . Here the jobs are classified and grouped according to a series of predetermined wage grades. Successive grades require increasing amounts of responsibility and/or KSAs. The descriptions of each of the job classes constitute the scale against which the specifications for the various jobs are compared. Point System . This is a quantitative procedure that determines a job’s relative value by calculating the total points assigned to it. Points are assigned on the basis of compensable factors valued by the organization. Setting up a point system is complicated, but administering it once it is in place is relatively simple. Here managers make use of a point manual that contains a description of all compensable factors and the degrees to which they may exist within jobs. Factor Comparison System . This is a factor-by-factor comparison method measured against identified key jobs. Key jobs are: (1) important to employees and the organization; (2) vary in terms of job requirements; (3) relatively stable in job content; (4) used in salary surveys for wage determination.
