● The IR drop and polarization result in the development of lower potentials than predicted.
● The overpotential is the degree of polarization. is the difference of potential between the theoretical
potential of the cell. (kinetic effect)

Ohmic drop (or ohmic potential):
● It is due to the strength of the solution.
● It is minimized with high ionic strength or the use of 3
electrodes.
Polarization:
● Polarization is the deviation of the potential of the electrode of its
theoretical value (Nernst equation) under the passage due.
Concentration:
Concentration polarization occurs because of the finite rate of mass transfer from the solution to the electrode surface.
Kinetics:
Kinetics the magnitude of the current is limited by the speed of a or of the two electrode reactions - that is, the speed of transfer
of electrons between the reactants and the electrode. For counterbalance kinetic polarization, an additional potential.
overvoltage is required to overcome the activation energy of the semi-reaction.

● The electrode mass before and after deposition
defines the amount of analyte in the sample.
● It can only be used for analytes that form a solid
deposit.

● no control of potential
Electrolytic procedures in which no effort is made to control the
working electrode potential use simple, low-cost equipment and require little
operator attention.

● With controlled potential.
Electrolysis current flows between the working
electrode and a counter electrode. The counter
electrode has no effect on the reaction that takes
place at the working electrode.
Potentiostats, which automatically
maintain the working electrode
potential at a controlled value in
relation to the reference electrode.

● Cell with 2 or 3 electrodes.
Three Electrode Configuration
● Reference electrode – maintains fixed potential despite changes in solution
comp.
● Working electrode – electrode of interest which is the cathode in this
system.
● Counter electrode (Auxiliary electrode) – third electrode taking most of
current flow (acts as current sink).
Advantages of 3 electrode system
● Changes in concentration at counter electrode are not important, no effect
on working electrode potential.
● No current flows through reference no IR drop (its potential is constant).

E⁰ = 0,339 V
Sn²⁺ + 2e⁻ ⇋ Sn(s)
E⁰ = -0,141V
-0,141V
0,339V
E = E⁰ -RT/nF ln 1/[Cu²⁺] = 0,339 - 0,0592/2 log 1/0,1 = 0,309v
99,99% -> 0,01% = [ ] = 0,1*0,01/100 = 1x10⁻⁵ M
E = 0,339 - 0,0592/2 log 1/1x10⁻⁵ = 0,191v
