Texto Base da comparação de possibilidades de uso:
From zero:
Build mostly everything in house, bringing the expertise of experienced
researches in the field allowing to reach top performance in the domain.
For document data extraction many techniques from the field of OCR can be used,
either from traditional computer vision using filtering, contour detection and
pattern matching or using deep learning techniques like convolutional neural
network for text detection, recurrent neural network for character recognition.
For face detection and matching there is vast array of machine learning
techniques, like the one proposed by Viola and Jones using Haar features. This
is a problem with a myriad of challenges related to classes underrepresented in
the dataset and how to correct compute a confidence score from the features.
In both problems the corner cases and the enormous variably of real worlds
samples make gathering a representative dataset very challenging.
Advantages: The full access to whole stack allow for integrating and developing
innovations, something that is not possible or very hard in the other cases,
allowing to bring state of the art research to your product.
Disadvantages: The initial cost in research is very high. Assembling a team of
experts in the field can be a challenge. The dataset cost to assemble an set
with 100.000s of good quality examples grow very fast. The time to delivery the
initial results can be long (many months to an year).
Middle ground:
Instead of starting from zero use offerings from Google, Microsoft, Amazon,
etc. to bootstrap a base offering and build a custom solution.
There still a good amount of domain specific techniques to be developed, the
high variability of documents and types of faces and the quality of the real
world images still exists and make developing a robust product a challenge.
Advantages: There still a great deal of innovation to be introduced, as general
solutions don't performance optimally in narrow domain. Leaving the long term
and costly research for the likes of Google and Microsoft you can focus on
short and medium term research.
Disadvantages: The time to delivery is not removed, but reduced to a couple of
months, there still the need to assemble a team with the needed expertise and
to fund the domain specific dataset, in the order of 10.000s, to develop and
validate the techniques.
Use X as Service
If this is not your main business, using the service of a company that
especialize in the domain allow you to focus in the principal problems you like
to solve.
Advantages: There is no need to gather the expertise or the dataset. The time
needed to delivery a working solution is faster and custom support is offered.
Disadvantages: A dependency in a specific vendor can be problematic and you
loose control in the prioritization of demands.
