localizar. Eu sempre uso o google para me ajudar a buscar a
expressão correta, mas aqui é fácil localizar a melhor
expressão no que refere a termos técnicos."
contextos originais.

54. Na opinião do orientador, quais foram os
maiores desafios que enfrentou?
Resposta do Orientador: "Considero sempre
relativas a fundamentação teórica, método e
resultados, quando se trata de discussão de
resultados de pesquisa de campo."
55.
56. I. Não saber por qual parte começar a
escrever;
II. Identificar quais eram as informações
necessárias e relevantes para serem
inseridas em um artigo, considerando que
o formato é curto e limitante, deve-se
conter informações que por si só
justificam a publicação...
62. "Start with your data"
•"The story grows organically
from the data..."
•"When you run into problems
is when the author knows the
story they want to tell before
they collect the data." (p. 9)

78. Rationale
• Non-native “stigmatized” (Flowerdew, 2008)
• Non-native forms not accepted (Owen, 2011)
• Linguistic injustice is a “myth”(Hyland, 2016)
• Research comparing non-native to native academic writing
(e.g. Pan et al., 2016) still presupposes a “deficiency model”
(Mauranen et al., 2016, p. 49)
• To date, no one has looked at English for Research
Publication Purposes (ERPP) from an ELF perspective (i.e.
English as a contact language).
79. "They Say, I Say"
• "(A) writer needs to indicate not only what
his or her thesis is, but also what larger
conversation that thesis is responding to."
(p. 20)
• "(W)hen is comes to constructing an
argument […], remember that you are
entering a conversation and therefore
need to start with 'what others are
saying'…" (p. 20)

HOEY’S PROBLEM-SOLUTION PATTERN
Michael Hoey, Textual Interaction: An Introduction to Written Discourse Analysis (2000) pp123
117. “The aim in projecting a text into dialogue in such a way is to ensure
that the questions spell out the relationship between the sentences;
the dialogue should make sense and there should be no distortion of
the meaning of the text (…) In this case, the questions all support the
initial identification of the text as organised by a Problem-Solution
pattern, with sentence 1 being the Situation, sentence 2 the
Problem, sentence 3 the Response and sentence 4 the Positive
Result. “
Micheal Hoey (2000)
HOEY’S PROBLEM-SOLUTION PATTERN
ESCRITA ACADÊMICA EM INGLÊS
118. ESCRITA ACADÊMICA EM INGLÊS
▸The function of the Situation element in our fabricated text,
sentence 1, is to provide background information.
▸In some senses the Situation only belongs to the pattern
retrospectively.
▸There is nothing about the first sentence that triggers any
expectations of a pattern to be followed.
HOEY’S PROBLEM-SOLUTION PATTERN:
SITUATION
119. ESCRITA ACADÊMICA EM INGLÊS
▸The trigger of the pattern is the word unable, which, like
expensive, negatively evaluates a Situation and invites a
description of some Response, and the pattern effectively begins
at this point, with the identification of some Problem.
▸Problem can be defined as “an aspect of the Situation requiring a
Response”, and gives rise to the expectation of a Response.
HOEY’S PROBLEM-SOLUTION PATTERN:
PROBLEM
120. ESCRITA ACADÊMICA EM INGLÊS
▸Sentence 3 provides the required Response to the Problem (…)
▸A Response does not bring the pattern to a close. If my fabricated
text had finished with I taught them text analysis you would have
felt it to be significantly incomplete. It is only when the Response
can be shown to be in truth, a solution that the pattern is felt to be
complete, and this is done with either a Positive Result or a
Positive Evaluation, or quite commonly both. This is, of course,
provided by sentence 4.
HOEY’S PROBLEM-SOLUTION PATTERN:
RESPONSE AND RESULT
