Anita Malfatti was a Brazilian painter born in 1889 in São Paulo. She studied art in Berlin and the United States, developing an expressionist style. Her 1917 exhibition of modernist works was controversially criticized at the time. Malfatti made major contributions to Brazilian art but received little recognition in her lifetime.
