1. 42Portugal Business on the Way
We’d already said in our internationalisation action
plan that the trimester before summer was going to be
non-stop. And so it was. It started with a hectic May which
saw the Portuguese Business Association (AEP) travel
to Paris – in a partnership with the Franco-Portuguese
Chamber of Commerce and Industry – with four Portu-
guese architecture firms, to take part in the Portuguese
Tourism and Real Estate Hall, in the Exhibition Park of
the Port of Versailles.
This is an annual event which is considered one of the
most important for the internationalisation of Portuguese
real-estate among the French population. Last year we
had 16 thousand visitors and this year over 200 exhibitors.
This is an increasingly important presence, at a time when
Portugal is attracting higher rates of French investment.
Next we went to Mexico, for our 15th AEP organised
trade mission to this market. Over three days the six com-
panies which participated in the mission (construction,
home accessories, textiles, food agriculture and wines)
were given the opportunity to become better acquainted
with the market and hold meetings with local companies.
Mexico is the world’s largest Spanish speaking country
and the fifth largest emergent economy after the BRICs
(Brazil, Russia, India and China), it is the 11th biggest
economy in the world, and has a growing, and young,
middle class. With its favourable business environment,
Mexico provides an open and stable economy and a rea-
AEP neste mercado.

sonably sized internal market for Portuguese
companies. It has free trade agreements with 46
countries, but relations with Portugal fall under
the Free Trade Agreement between Mexico and
the European Union, which provides for duty
free imports, as well as other benefits.
This mission was developed by the AEP as
part of its “Business On the Way” project, under
the auspices of the Axis II – Joint Ventures –
Internationalisation wing of the Portugal 2020
and the Compete 2020 projects.
Almost at the same time we travelled to
Stuttgart, Germany, with a group of Portuguese
companies from the automobile industry, to
take part in the Global Automotive Components
and Suppliers fair. This trade mission was organ-
ised jointly with ADIA the Automobile Industry
Manufacturer’s Association and a total of eight
companies made the trip, aimed at strengthen-
ing the Portuguese presence in this market and
boosting exports.
This was the second year in a row that we
helped organise the Portuguese mission to the
Global Automotive, but in 2016 the AEP had al-
ready helped organise a collective participation
in the IZB – International Suppliers Fair (auto-
mobile industry components) as well as a reverse
buyers’ mission. Just last year we were in Mu-
nich at the BAU (construction, construction and

AEP, integrada no seu projeto "Business On the
Way", no âmbito do Portugal 2020 e Compete
2020, Programa Operacional da Competitivida-
de e Internacionalização, Eixo II – Projetos con-
juntos – Internacionalização.
Quase em simultâneo, viajámos até Estugar-
da, na Alemanha, para acompanhar um grupo
de empresas portuguesas do setor automóvel à
feira Global Automotive Components and Su-
ppliers. Organizada em parceria com a AFIA
– Associação de Fabricantes para a Indústria Au-
tomóvel, a participação portuguesa contou com
oito empresas, que têm como objetivo reforçar
a presença no mercado para aumentar as expor-
tações.

interiors materials) and in Frankfurt, at the IAA
(International Motor Show).
The Global Automotive Components and
Suppliers fair, which takes place in the Stuttgart
Mess, is an event in which the most recent prod-
ucts and technology for the automobile sector
are presented. Many manufacturers, equipment
producers and supply chain agents take part.
In June, following a five-year gap, the AEP
travelled to Israel, one of the most advanced
countries in terms of economic and industrial
development. This was our third trade mission
to Israel, the first having taken place in 2010,
with seven companies and the second, in 2012,
with six, from a variety of sectors.
Israel has a diverse corporate fabric and is
very advanced in technological terms, due to a
heavy investment in education, technology and
research and development. As for industry, the
spotlight is on the chemical, pharmaceutical,
cutting edge technology and diamond cutting,
whereas the highlight for the services sector is
tourism.
In 2016 Israel had the world’s 34th largest
GDP, at around 318 billion dollars and a per
capita value of 35.179 dollars, according to the
IMF, the World Bank and the OECD.
As July came along we were expected in Lu-
anda. With the support of the Portuguese – An-
golan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and
of AICEP Portugal Global, the AEP managed to
nal do Automóvel).
A Global Automotive Components and Su-
volvimento.

FMI, Banco Mundial e OCDE.

nies in the 34th edition of the International Fair
of Luanda (FILDA).
This year we accompanied a delegation of 19
Portuguese companies and two associations to
FILDA, giving them the opportunity to show-
case their products and services to thousands of
visitors.
I believe that a regular Portuguese presence
at FILDA can only serve to consolidate and
strengthen the commercial relations between
the two countries and open up new business
opportunities in sectors which are already tra-
ditional exporters to Angola.
The importance of this market to the Por-
tuguese economy could be seen in the fact that
AEP Vice-President Luís Miguel Ribeiro; Sec-
retary of State for Internationalisation Eurico
Brilhante Dias and AICEP President Castro
Henriques visited the Portuguese pavilion.

Henriques.
Boa lei-
tura e até breve!
this phase will be able to reap the rewards for their effort.
This was the case with a good deal of the 17 companies,
from different sectors, which took part in the II Ango-
la-Portugal Business Forum, in January 2017, which had
over 300 participants.
Of course the first AEP trade mission to Angola took
place in 1990, and since then it has organised many more
missions and fairs, involving several hundred Portuguese
companies.
This year the Portuguese delegation included compa-
nies from sectors which have a strong presence in the An-
golan market (food agriculture and beverages, engineer-
ing, metalworking, textiles, among others). Most of the
participants already export to Angola.
Until, finally, August brought with it much awaited
holidays, at least, that is, for most of the companies with
which the AEP works on internationalisation missions.
Meanwhile, for some of us, it is time to take stock and to
prepare the next missions.
Soon September will be upon us and we already have
tickets for Milan and Brazil, then it’s up to Canada and
down to Namibia, Africa, or further East to Thailand. We
have a busy trimester ahead! Have a look at our calendar to
decide which trade mission best suits the exporting plans
of your company. Until then, rest easy and take the spare
time to enjoy all we have for you in this new edition of
Bow magazine. Pleasant reading, and see you soon!
