The indigenous Uru people live on Titicaca Lake, near the city of Puno, Peru. To visit the lake and this
people one needs to make use of some kind of fluvial transport like ‘traditional tourist’ boats or some
other kind of boat.
The Uru live on fluctuating islands made by hand from totora, a kind of reed. Each is inhabited by a
family or a kindred and also functions as one of the ‘tourist destinations’.
The Uru established a daily rotation scheme for visits to the different islands. In this way the revenue is
distributed between the family units. On the chosen day the inhabitants of that particular island will rise
early in order to receive visitors all through the day.

No turismo, a divisão sexual do trabalho é complementar .
Women’s labour is essential for the Uru tourist economy, especially because of their handicrafts and
commercial activities. Among women these activities may be combined with normal daily and activities
like child caring.
The sexual division of labour in tourism is complementary.

Spaces on the island are clearly separated. Some are restricted to the inhabitants, for example, the
private areas behind their houses where they keep their boats. Some of the paces of daily use are also
used for tourist purposes, like selling tourist artefacts beside cooking activities. Other activities, like the
arrival of the boat selling merchandise, may happen during this ‘tourist time’.
Tourists normally arrive on the islands by boats organized by authorized tourist agencies. Usually every
group stays less than two hours on an island: they observe houses built with totora, listen to
explanations on local culture, buy handicrafts, film, take pictures, and may make a short journey from
one island to the next on a special ‘totora boat’.

The Uru circulate between the islands and the city of Puno by means of boats. Normally they use small
traditional rafts made of totora or, today, motorized boats. The tourists may take a small journey from
one island to another in a different large raft especially conceived for tourists inspired on the traditional
model.

One of the islands has been turned into a tourist center called Suma Kurmi. Here are small stalls and
tourists can buy refreshments. Several groups of tourists may meet here.

them to the boat, saying their goodbyes and watching them leave.

From one of the islands or the tourist centre tourists may go on to more distant attractions on Titicaca
lake, or they may return directly to Puno to finish their day trip. The return to the city uses motorized
boats.
