Silvio Santos, a Brazilian television icon, is one of the most recognizable faces in the country and the voice most familiar to the ears of millions. He is a version of self-made man, considered by many a hero of Brazilians national capitalism. The Street Vendor has become a great entrepreneur, his personal wealth is valued at approximately R$ 6 billion. Santos was born on December, 12 1930, in Rio de Janeiro. His father, Alberto Abravanel left Greece fleeing from military service. Caught in the act in France he was sent off to Brazil, where he met Rebecca, a stubborn and temperamental Turkish woman. Together they ended up starting the Abravanel family. Santos was the first of 5 children (Beatriz, Sara, Leon, Perla and Henrique). His father wanted to name him Dom but the register officer told him it was not allowed. To Alberto, senhor (which means Mister in Portuguese), had the same meaning as Dom; he decided to baptize him with the Spanish version of the name, senor . His mother, on the other hand, didn’t like it and called him Silvio instead.
When Santos was twelve he started his first business. At school, in the recess time, he started to sell candy to his friends so that he could go to the movies as he was fascinated by it.
At 14 he was spellbound by a street vendor (a camelô in Portuguese) who was selling pens in downtown, the guy could sell to any one just by describing all its attributes and only in the end saying the price. So, he realized the secret of selling is getting people’s attention and he could do it better. As a result, he became a street vendor doing magic tricks to attract customers. But along came the police, as street vendor was an illegal activity at that time. However, the cop took pity on him and gave him a card to a radio station where he could apply for a job. He had to contest with 300 candidates; he ended up in the 1 st place. However, the radio didn’t pay as well as his old business, so, he decided to go back selling in the Streets of Rio. After a while, he got tired of running from the cops and when he completed 18 years old he joined the army at the skydiving school. But he learned that the army equals to much hard work and he gave up, but as he didn’t want to go back to the uncertainty of a street vendor life he decided to try the radio again it was around that time he created his artistic name, Silvio Santos, as he always says “Because the Saints help.”
Sometime later, while Santos was still working at the radio and to return home he had to catch the last barge. He noticed when he turned on his sound equipment people started to dance and when they got tired they made a huge line at the water fountain. It was in that moment Santos realized that he could sell beer and soda in the travel. Then, he made an agreement with a Brazilian beverage company, ANTÁRTICA , to sell their products in the barge. To make more profit he would offer each client a bingo card if they bought a beer. One day the barge suffered an accident and it had to stay in the dock the director of ANTÁRTICA invited him to stay a season in São Paulo.
There Santos met an old friend who was also a broadcaster; he told him that they were looking for broadcasters in the Radio he was working. Santos did the test and once again he passed in the 1 st place. In the radio he met Manoel da Nóbrega; this friendship would prove to be one of the biggest treasures in Santos’ life. Nóbrega was having problems with his business BAÚ DA FELICIDADE (Vault of Happiness). The business consisted in a box of toys for Christmas where people would pay for it in small installments beforehand and in Christmas time they would receive the box. Nóbrega would pay for the ads and lend his name to the firm; he had a partner, the “ Alemão ” (German), who would take care of the company but he lost all the money. So, he asked for Santos’ help. Silvio Santos, then 27, realized that if the business was well managed, could earn them a fortune. He asked to be put in place of the “ Alemão ”; Nóbrega would continue doing the ads, while he would manage the company. Nóbrega told him he would help but he didn’t want to take any part in the business. Santos began to sell goods and he diversified the catalog. He even ordered 40,000 dolls, from a Brazilian toys company ESTRELA and did business with NADIR FIGUEIREDO FACTORY to deliver 20,000 dining sets. Santos was able to carry on the business and still returned all the investment made by Nóbrega. The Vault Man made a point of paying for everything out of gratitude to his friend.
The owner of PAULISTA TV, Victor Costa, was interested in launching a TV program of variety from noon to 2pm on Sundays. Manoel de Nóbrega had the preference of the time; however, he gave space to the enthusiastic Santos, who was always grateful for this gesture. The first program, on PAULISTA TV, was called Hangman it was in the evenings, in 1961. By the fall of 1962, Santos debuted in multiple TV Programs on Sunday. Among them: Beware of the Horn; Buy Who Can; Queen for a Day; Starts at 100; Ask and Dance. It was not hard to become the owner of the Sunday. When Roberto Marinho, owner of GLOBO TV, bought the PAULISTA TV, in 1966, Santos was kept with his Sunday program. He closed a five year contract. He was the owner of the time, and he was never an employee. In business, his enthusiasm was still enviable as Santos was growing his empire. His appearance on TV fueled sales of the BAÚ DA FELICIDADE. To meet new customers and keep the profit in hands, he created new companies. The first, advertising company, help him broker other advertisers for his TV shows. He started a building company to supply the need created by the Home Ownership Plan generated by the government at that time. After that he opened a financial company, to facilitate credit, and a car dealership to deliver cars - another novelty of the BAÚ. Not satisfied, Santos has also launched an insurance company. Silvio Santos spread his wings in all markets. In 1974, he created a company SILVIO SANTOS STUDIOS FILM AND TELEVISION, a major production center of the TV programs he hosted, commercials, news coverage and shows at fairs. The only thing missing was a TV Station.
The Brazilian TV was born in September 18, 1950, brought in by Assis Chateaubriand who founded the first television channel in the country, the TUPI TV in Rio de Janeiro. 50’s: 1950, PRF-3 TUPI TV, the first Brazilian TV broadcaster. SILVIO SANTOS GROUP one of the leading business organizations in Brazil. In 2008 celebrated 50 years of activities that create brands, products and services that have earned a very special place in life and in the hearts of Brazilians. This year SILVIO SANTOS GROUP is restructuring its main activities for the communications sectors, capitalization and cosmetics. TeleSena - the best-selling capitalization title in the history of the segment in Brazil, SBT and JEQUITI COSMETICS are among the trademarks and operations of the group.
Because of a fraud in PANAMERICANO BANK, SILVIO SANTOS GROUP entered into a financial crisis in November, 2010. To recover the bank, which had a debt close to $ 2.5 billion, the group needed to borrow from the FGC (FUNDO GARANTIDOR DE CRÉDITO). Because of this loan, the SILVIO SANTOS GROUP placed as collateral for the loan some of the group companies, including the SBT, the JEQUITI COSMETICS and BAÚ DA FELICIDADE. On January of this year Silvio Santos announced the sale of the PANAMERICANO BANK to BTG PACTUAL, for $ 450 million. And on June the same year, the SILVIO SANTOS GROUP announced the sale of the network BAÚ DA FELICIDADE to the MAGAZINE LUIZA GROUP. They paid R$ 83 million for the BAÚ , in an operation involving 121 stores in São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Paraná. Moreover, MAGAZINE LUIZA adds 3 million customers to its card base.
Bellow follows a transcript of an interview given by Silvio Santos to his employees in celebration of SBT’s 30 years in TV: Employee: Tell us some of the secrets of the Silvio Santos entrepreneur… Silvio Santos: For those who want to start any type of business, do not worry about compliments or critics. If you are going to start your business in any sector, it doesn’t matter that this market has a leader and that you will never be able to reach him. If you don’t aim high, if you manage your business in a down to earth way, don’t worry about the first place, nor the second, neither the last. If you do what your intuition tells you and use good reason, leaving the vanity aside, you will have all the possibilities for achieving your goal. Don’t doubt it! The ones who won’t reach their goals are those who dream too much, those who bite more than they can chew and those who think things are easy. Everything is hard! Everything must be fight for! And when you get an easy thing be wary, because it is not as easy as it sounds. Keep working, keep betting in your intuition, keep grounded and don’t care about what your wife, your children and your friends tell you. Only care about with what you live day-by-day, at least it was this way that I from street vendor was able to become a banker. I raised my daughters, because I always had a dream in having in Brazil the same life style as the Americans have in United States. I always thought the best way of living is to live as mid-class citizen. Everything that goes by and comes to be enough to live as a mid-class citizen, in my (as I told you before) crazy opinion is a prize. Money to me represents only prizes of success, of victory. Employee: During the celebrations of 30 years of SBT, when I saw you talk I didn’t see a group of employees clapping their boss or an entrepreneur. The sensation that I had was hearing a group of fans clapping and hearing an idol. You, Silvio Santos, see yourself that way? People work for you and adore you. Silvio Santos: No, I never was worried about that and my popularity surprises me. No is true, it surprises me, because it was never my goal and the press knows it. I don’t do interview for my colleagues, I don’t appear in their TV shows, because I only do my job. I do only what I have to as a professional. If SBT… If I was an SBT employee, like… Well, I was never an employee, because when I started on television I was already renting my schedule but if… I was only an employee at the National Radio…But I always did what they tell me to do. So, today in the SBT, I do my TV Show and I can assure you, although you might laugh, I’m a volunteer. I don’t earn anything at all. (Laughs) It is true! The SBT managers are here and they will not let me lie SBT doesn’t pay me nothing at all, nothing! I used to earn R$ 300,000.00 from BAÚ DA FELICIDADE to the BAÚ’S TV Show but as the BAÚ closed they don’t pay me more. “ Work is 1% inspiration plus 99% transpiration ” - Albert Einstein
