3) Funções do GPS como plotagem rápida, waypoints, navegação de derrota e navegação Go To.
5. NAVEGAÇÃO EM ÁGUAS
RESTRITAS
A IMO e a IALA recomendam que
sistemas eletrônicos de
posicionamento para navegação de
aproximação de portos e em águas
restritas tenham uma PRECISÃO DE
10 m com 95 % de probabilidade.
6. NAVEGAÇÃO EM ÁGUAS
RESTRITAS
O Ministério de Transporte americano
considera que o uso de APENAS o
GPS não satisfaz os requisitos de
Integridade, Precisão e Disponibilidade
necessários para navegação de
aproximação de portos e em águas
restritas.

46. Por que criar uma derrota?
Derrota é uma seqüência de
waypoints
O GPS se orienta automaticamente
para o próximo waypoint
Pode ser revertida para retorno ao
ponto de partida
Derrotas permitem passagens
afastadas de perigos à navegação e
encurtam as distâncias navegadas

68. Um waypoint
(WPT)
é um ponto de interesse
à navegação
expresso em
coordenadas geográficas
69. Waypoints podem ser usados:
• Como limites entre segmentos da
derrota
• Para marcar pontos de guinada,
destino, auxílio à navegação
• Para marcar perigos à navegação
70. Receptores GPS aceitam a entrada de
waypoints em vários formatos
(lat / long, marcação e distância)
Uma seqüência de waypoints define uma
derrota planejada
A maior parte dos receptores GPS podem
armazenar derrotas e waypoints
71. Dicas GPS

72. Dicas GPS
navegação -- áreas a serem evitadas
e áreas safas

A idéia é PASSAR POR FORA e não BATER.
• Determinar waypoints para passar com segurança
A que proximidade de um perigo?
• Decisão pessoal; fatores a considerar:
Precisão do GPS
Imprecisões das cartas (elaboradas antes do GPS)
Localização permitida de auxílios à navegação
Passar por fora a que distância?
Possibilidade de manobra para evitar colisão
Capacidade de guinar sobre rota esperada (XTE)
Escala da carta
• Sugerir aproximadamente 0,1 NM (185,2 metros)
• Verificar waypoints com anéis de distância
77. Selecione waypoints que possam
ser verificados por outros meios

148. Main Message to the Civil
GPS Community:
GPS provides many benefits to civilian users.
It is vulnerable, however, to interference and
other disruptions that can have harmful
consequences. GPS users must ensure that
adequate independent backup systems or
procedures can be used when needed.

It is possible for GPS to give erroneous information for periods of up to a few hours without warning. The integrity warning requirement in IMO Resolution A860 (20) is defined as "the ability to provide users with warnings within a specified time (10 sec) when the system should not be used for navigation". The cessation of SA does not affect this integrity issue
A IMO (Organização Marítima Internacional) e a IALA (Organização Internacional de Sinalização Náutica)
Very good but not good enough for precision navigation or aircraft use.
These numbers are for SA (Selective Availability) set to zero. The standard GPS is good for almost all small boat navigation purposes.
Due to errors in signal (see following slide) and errors in charting.
Datums are confusing, and you can get questions which will throw you off into a place where you don’t want to go. The key points are as follows:
1.Charts are based on certain assumptions about the earth’s size and shape.
2.Many areas of the world are not surveyed accurately, although they may be accurate on a micro (local) level. This is especially true with Island Nations.
3.Using the correct datum will make your position agree with the chart.
4.A big problem is that customers use cartographic GPSs with a NAD 27 cartridge, and have the GPS in WGS 84.

Note that if you are as far off-course as the drawing shows, you could run into Third Reef anyway!
This diagram illustrates why Darryl Lowrance does not put STEER into his products. He feels that a direct course to the destination may ram someone into a reef.
Clean presentation, with some user-modifiable data fields on the GPS II (which will become more common).
Emphasize Range and Bearing (or distance and direction). It is the foundation of using a GPS.
Pretty self-explanatory. Many boaters will get along fine by just using GOTO navigation.
Route editing can be very difficult on some models.
This is a good time to take a break and get the students back to using their handheld GPS. Make a mark in a parking lot for the MOB and see how close you are after you’ve walked 100 to 200 yards away and come back. I’ve seen less than 6 foot errors. If you want go to www.garmin.com adventures in GPS and read the story about one life saved by reversing a track.

If you don’t name the waypoint when you store it, you’ll forget where you were when you stored it!
Autoroute is very handy for retracing channels.
Position averaging does not have a ton of marine applications, since the boat will tend to move while you average. More of a hunter/hiker application.
In the GPS 12 XL, you can leave it on and averaging your position for hours if you like, which effectively eliminates S/A.
Entering waypoints on a single screen is SO much easier than using a Lowrance “field at a time” GPS.
Reference waypoints are not used very frequently, but they allow you to specify a waypoint in reference to another waypoint. Sometimes called Waypoint Projection.
Note the nice little edit menu at the bottom.
Use ROUTE navigation when you don’t want to wander off-course due to dangers.
Use ROUTE navigation when you don’t want to wander off-course due to dangers.
1 Plan route
2 Check for obstacles between waypoints (Use the pen to draw in an island while talking about it, hit the letter “e” to erase when done)
3 Check ½ mile either side of track line for shallow water etc. to allow for possible leeway.
Plot course in true or magnetic depending on how your GPS is setup if route clear of obstacles.
Determine distance between waypoints.
6. Discuss why Lat and lon vs bearing and distance. It insures accuracy of waypoint in that you should see the same bearing and distance appear on you GPS display. If it does not, something is wrong and it allows you to find the problem and correct it before getting underway and possibly running aground.
Use of GPS Underway
At each waypoint, check receiver indication of bearing and distance against those measured on chart--this is both a receiver check and detects errors in entering waypoints
Stress that the entire route must be inspected to ensure adequate margin is allowed. Have the students try to steer a route and keep an eye on the XTE, it is easier said than done. I believe steering may be the biggest source of error when following a route. Given this route it may be prudent to steer in a westerly direction (North is up).
Please make the point that the route leaves ample sea room for collision avoidance. If you meet another vessel also close to the point one vessel would need to turn into danger to satisfy nav rules, that isn’t going to happen.
The point here is that some channels not only require that you pass between the buoys but do so on a given course. I know that better marking would help but sometimes there isn’t enough money. On my boat I don’t have a lot of room for the big paper charts, so I’ve done the following. I used Nobeltec’s Visual GPS Planner to enter my waypoints and load them into my Garmin GPSIII. I then printed out chart snippets on 8 ½ by 11, double side, with a color inkjet printer. Kinkos encased the charts in a tough plastic laminate. I navigate by these snippets that are stuffed in the electronic box behind the fish finder. I keep large backups on board but have yet to use them.
This is how it should be: you can do anything you want to a route, including copying it to another route so you can further modify it.
Again a local chart 14782 but a good as any.
Use GOTO when you don’t have to, or cannot, stay on a course line.
This slide gives you an opportunity to speak about charts, it was done from a newer, larger scale chart. Impress upon the student the need for updated charts with the proper scale! Compare this screen shot to 1210TR.
Any example that shows running aground will do. Point is to stress to students you can’t do a blind GO TO.
You can sum up the class and have this as a post class exercise.
Due to errors in signal (see following slide) and errors in charting.
Great screen, and copied by everyone else. However, keep the personal feelings in check when describing screens and features. Try to let the pictures speak for themselves.
Clean presentation, with some user-modifiable data fields on the GPS II (which will become more common).
You can actually use this page walking to a near, say 150 yard, waypoint. You may wish to add it as an exercise.
This is the same situation that would occur if point B was a lighted buoy and you were steering towards the buoy at night, a good parallel to draw.
This is just like a database or Rolodex entry.
Details to follow, read the slide and go forward.
An interesting question came up from the satellite screen on a garmin, if the GPS does not know direction how can it display the location of the satellites. The answer is the garmin knows the almanac and displays the information from the almanac. Good point to advertise our courses.
If you build the compass deviation tool make sure two compasses are not too close, the adjustment magnets really have an effect.
Laying the background for the highway page on a GPS.
Again, please let me know how your training session went and suggestions for improvements.

Selective Availability was the greatest source of error until it was turned off on 2 May 2000. It has been said that SA may be applied in specific geographic areas as it suits the DOD.
Have a backup on Datum handy. I had a question and needed to speak to it.
World Geodetic System 1984 reference ellipsoid.
If you use 1210TR you may want to increase the distance above 0.2NM given the chart scale.

This is a great exercise. A modern 12 channel parallel receiver will work very well at a moderate walk. It also gets the students up and moving about so interest can be maintained. If you have local chart use it, it not use 1210TR. So what if the waypoint is thousands of miles away.

• Right now, unintentional disruptions occur fairly often (e.g., Florida ~ 2/8/01).
• Besides backup systems, user training for awareness of when to switch to backup, etc., are important
