Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau was a pioneering German filmmaker in the silent horror genre. He directed the 1922 vampire film Nosferatu and the expressionist masterpiece Faust in 1926, which brought him success in Hollywood. Murnau continued experimenting with film techniques and directing acclaimed films until his untimely death in a car accident in 1931.
