Lapis Exilis, a symbolic stone represented in a cycle of legends connected
with the Knights of the Round Table, the signification of the Holy Grail,
Joseph of Arimathea, King Arthur, even with more ancient and long gone
civilizations such as the Kelts or the Atlantids, as referred in Plato’s Timaeus,
present in their religious cults, as well as in it’s modern version:
- “The Eucharistic Cup of the Catholics’ Mass...”.
Many traditions link this stone with the planet Venus, regarding it
as a heavenly star that fell on earth in a remote era. Many sources affirm
that this stone was enormous and green. An emerald named Lapis Exilis,
i.e. star fallen from Heaven, or stone of Light, or simply Green Stone,
out of which the Holy Grail would have been carved from.
In primitive traditions, this star is always mentioned as being the one from which
the energy of the stars can be obtained, or as a “Cup”, seen as the Universe
containing the Planets and the Stars, being the Sun the Master element.
The Muslims refer to this stone as the “Caaba” which fell from the heaven
and became black bearing, thus, all the sins in the World.
The Alchemists refer to Lapis Exilis as a humble stone which may be seen only
by the pure of heart as well as the believers.
To the Buddhists, Lapis Exilis remits to the inhabitants of “Shambhala”.
Also, the Legend says that the stone, Lapis Exilis, was green and fell from
Lucifer’s forehead while he was at war with GOD.
This legendary cycle, or the meteor which fell high from the Skies,
has enraptured Pilgrims, Writers, Philosophers, and Cinematographers.
Wagner expressed it better than anyone else in his opera “Parsifal”.
This exhibition of paintings, “Lapis Exilis - The Virtues”, is a pictorial essay
by someone who is sensitive to the imperative calling, to the message that lies
in between colours and art forms.
“Be it as a Book, a Cup, or a Stone, the esoterism of the Grail always leads back
to a sole point: to the fact that it is from the earth, in which men begin their
search, that it vanishes from...”
Despite the different associations, “Lapis Exilis” always delivers us
to a resplendent sign pointing to a path of unity and harmony among all peoples,
from East to West.

This document analyzes album cover designs of bands in the grindie music genre. It notes several common conventions, including featuring the band's name in a graffiti-style font, using bold colors, having a dominant central image related to the music, and not including photos of the band members. The document discusses individual album covers from bands like Does It Offend You Yeah?, Klaxons, Linkin Park, and Gym Class Heroes to identify design similarities and differences between their covers in font, images, and styles used.
The document discusses teaching and learning from different perspectives:
- Teaching can be both an art and a science, influenced by experiences and motivation.
- Learning is complex and affected by emotions, knowledge development, preconceptions, and study skills. Students learn best with motivation, clear goals, and linking theory to practice.
- Knowledge can be understood in different ways and develops from received knowledge to more critical and contextual understanding over time. Teaching strategies and student learning approaches are also influenced by various factors.

This document provides an introduction to springs in Missouri, discussing their importance historically and the human attraction to them. It notes that springs guided settlement patterns and supplied water, powering mills and towns. While scientists can now explain springs, people still find them intriguing. The document then discusses how springs were harnessed for their power potential, with mills and other developments being built nearby. It provides an example of one entrepreneur viewing an undeveloped spring as a wasted resource and describes the harnessing of the large Blue Spring in south-central Missouri to power a mill via a water turbine.
Plastic surgery aims to reconstruct or repair the human body through medical operations. It is divided into reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery. Reconstructive surgery repairs defects, while aesthetic surgery improves normal features. People undergo plastic surgery to repair disabilities, improve self-esteem, or gain advantages in work. However, there are risks like infection, scarring, and nerve damage. To prevent failure, one must choose a qualified plastic surgeon and safe facility, properly consult and care for recovery. While plastic surgery can help some, we should appreciate our natural beauty.
Physical methods can be used to transfer genes into cells by creating transient defects in cell membranes through which naked DNA can enter. These include electroporation, gene guns, ultrasound, and hydrodynamic delivery.
Electroporation uses short pulses of high voltage to carry DNA across cell membranes. Gene guns use compressed gas to accelerate DNA-coated metal particles into cells. Ultrasound uses microbubbles and acoustic cavitation to enhance DNA delivery. Hydrodynamic delivery involves high-pressure injection of DNA solution into an organ to enter cells.
These physical methods show promise for gene transfer but also have limitations like tissue damage, shallow penetration depth, or low efficiency that need addressing for clinical use.

Maria Sobral Mendonça is an important reference in the Portuguese panorama
of contemporary art.
The strong relationship between her work and the space where it is exhibited
stands out in her trajectory. Her exhibitions have always taken place
in monuments and churches, challenging spaces opened to her artistic creativity.
This exhibition, “Lapis Exilis – The Virtues”, which takes place in the chapel
of Ajuda Palace, increases the value and dynamism of this space in a stimulating
way. To appreciate this exhibition is therefore to understand the relationship
between the paintings and what involves them, in a threefold trajectory
and let ourselves be carried into an imaginary and pictoric universe through
a multidisciplinary contribute.

entusiamado Peregrinos, Escritores, Pensadores e Cineastas. Wagner,

3. From research to thematic

Quid est veritas?
Terra Média… Azul de Céu… Azul de Mar
O Azul do Céu Mediterrâneo… o ar… fluxo, refluxo… movimento perpétuo…
o vai e vem sem adorno, sem quimera, sem retorno…
paixão… e a cada momento a renovação… é a procura do conhecimento,
Hoje… mentes inquietas buscam Ideias… caem no vazio…
o Aprimoramento… a Humanidade.

5. Lapis Exilis
Quid est veritas?
Middle Land… Sky Blue… Sea Blue.
The Blue of the Mediterranean Sky… the Sea… ebb and flow…
everlasting movement… the simple seesaw motion with no fantasy, no return…
passion… each time renovation… it is the search for knowledge, perseverance…
Faith banners reaching the Blues of faraway Heavens in the waves of life.
Today… restless minds look for Ideas… fall in the void… tied to new concepts
darkened by secularization.
Ochre of the Dunes… Sea of Sand.
The Yellows of the Desert… place of birth… place of event… the Heat
on the immensity always the same, always different… creative silence inviting
to reflection… clay God moulds according to the Sirocco… cradle of Civilization…
which reached spirituality in the proof of Faith that the Sun carried away
lighting the bareness of distant lands.
Now… suffering people… tired in their inconformism… grabbing the buoy
of Fundamentalism.
Art dares to mix that Blue and these Yellows respecting the textures
and the pigments… combination of Sea, Desert under a sage light…
in this mixture, an emerald green Hope appears… Lapis Exilis… and the path
to Illumination to knowledge is thus drawn… Wisdom is within reach
with the help of Serenity… the Perfection…the Humanity.
From this sage union Peace and goodwill shall arise among the Peoples,
brought in a Sunrise…

temática do próprio palácio.

9. Introduction
Maria Sobral Mendonça is a designer, a publicist and a painter with a ten-year’s
mystic experience and a brilliant carrier. Some years after a remarkable exhibition
at the National Pantheon this artist is now presenting her works in another
monument – the Nacional Ajuda Palace. I was surprised to meet the painter
who had worked with me before in her quality of graphic designer and had
already carried out an interesting project for our Education Service.
At first I was amazed by her versatility in plastic arts but then her work amazed
me. After running the catalogues of her previous exhibitions I was sorry I’d not
been familiar with Maria Sobral Mendonça’s several features earlier.
While visiting me at my place in October 2004, Maria suggested the Lapis Exilis
exhibition which I immediately was pleased to welcome with just one condition:
since the National Ajuda Palace only hosts its own exhibitions, a theme linking
it to the palace was mandatory. Willing to make the event possible I suggested
the theme The Virtues since it is present on the sculptures decorating the niches
of the imposing arcades of the Ajuda Palace.
Thus surpassing the only difficulty a new proposal arose and its inspiration source
fits perfectly in those grounds.
Moreover for several years now the Ajuda Palace tries and is connected with
contemporary art and has promoted the series of exhibitions “A look on the
Palace” revealing the contemporary artists’ interpretation on our collection.
Although this exhibition doesn’t integrate that series, it reveals and lives
somewhat the same philosophy.
The Ajuda Palace receives with great anticipation this set of works which
will certainly touch the public and stir profound emotions in those who will
understand Maria Sobral Mendonça’s message.

As Câmaras Municipais – e Lisboa nessa matéria dá e dará o exemplo –

13. Nobody is indifferent to Maria’s paintings.
To support artistic creation is a must to public administration,
in particular for those having the greatest intervention capability.
Town Halls – Lisbon is and will always be an example of this – have played
an important role supporting music and literature, painting and sculpture,
the theatre and even the artists themselves.
Maria Sobral Mendonça’s work now shown in the exhibition Lapis Exilis
– the Royal Association of Lisbon presents at the right moment present –
are the proof that “…man dreams… the work is born”.
What make Lapis Exilis a unique exhibition are its rejuvenating message
and its incitement to come near a world that we often forget in our daily life.
Maria Sobral Mendonça’s sensibility reflected on her Works shows us
the beauty of life.

Um dia, algo aconteceu nos Céus.
Azul, era o Céu.
A terra ficou Amarela tórrida.
Eu, fiquei à espera.
Veio o vento
E, um imenso branco. O Branco no Branco.
Nem sei, mas vi.
Senti.
Realizei.
Realizámos.
Figuras de cores desvendavam segredos,
Eram contos... Eram contos. Tocar Na Mente.
Azuis, Brancos, Amarelos ou poeiras
Das coisas. Largar o Cais do Desconhecido.
Nem sei.
Mas aconteceu um dia
Cores, imagens, histórias cheias de magia.
Era eu. A Perda Do Eu Pelo Outro.
Eras tu.
Estar
Ser
Deixar de ser.
Esse será o quadro ausente. A Dança dos Pássaros.
De tudo
Num todo
Num sempre
Realizar um desejo no Azul do Mediterrâneo.

17. Lapis Exilis
One day something happened In the Heavens.
The Sky was Blue.
The earth became torrid Yellow.
I myself stood waiting.
Along came the wind
And a white immense. This White On White
I cannot say, yet I saw.
I felt.
I accomplished.
We accomplished.
Multicoloured shapes unveiled secrets
These were tales... These were tales. Touching The Mind.
Blue, White, Yellow or dust
Of the things. We set sail from the harbour of the Unknown
I cannot say.
But it happened one day
Colours, images, stories filled with magic.
It was I. The Disappearance Of Myself For The Other.
It was you.
One day - who’d say - so many flags
will be displayed on the balcony where you sit
for your faintness.
Standing
Being
Ceasing to be.
That will be the absent painting. The Dance of the Birds.
Of all
In the whole
Always
Accomplishing a wish in the Blue of the Mediterranean Sky

18. Um sonho
Um cheiro
Um encanto
Um desenho tamanho
O quadro.
Nem tu nem eu, estivemos nesse lugar
Mas guardamos memórias daquelas histórias,
dos desertos das cores.
Onde pigmentos desejados estiveram
Em abraço naquele imenso Céu
Ao mesmo tempo em compasso de espera.
Um dia, algo acontecerá
No Mediterrâneo e o Céu será Azul
E, a Lua recortará desejos
Amortecidos no esquecimento
De quem lembra
Outros tempos, bem nossos conhecidos.
No Céu a Lua e o Sol se encontram
Noutros tempos envelhecidos,
Onde brincamos ás vezes de nós esquecidos.
No Céu do Mediterrâneo
O Sol é implacável.
A Lua recortará desejos,
De um novo Céu demasiadamente Azul.
Quid est veritas?

19. A dream
A scent
A wonder
An immense drawing
The painting.
Neither you nor I have ever met that place
And yet we keep memories of these stories,
of the desert of the colours.
Of that place where longed pigments maintained
The embrace throughout a waiting pace
in that immeasurable Heaven
One day something will happen
In the Mediterranean and the Sky will be Blue
Over a torrid Yellow land.
One day, in that immeasurable Sky
White will embrace Yellow with shades of Blue
There, the Star will spring
The Moon will trim the wishes
Of a brand new Heaven drawn by Lapis Exilis.
In a land dried out of secrets
Deadened by the oblivion
Of those who remember
Other time so familiar to us.
The Sun and the Moon meet each other
In a time that has grown old
Where, oblivious of ourselves, we sometimes play
In the Mediterranean Sky
The Sun is ruthless.
The Moon will trim the wishes
Of a brand new excessively Blue Sky.

Armando Martins

23. Maria Sobral Mendonça’s painting may certainly be called abstract
and it is characterized by very strong and almost pure colours. In almost everyone
of Maria’s works I can see an infinite number of human beings, hand in hand,
wrapped in an energetic fluid, the strongest pulling the others towards the Heaven.
I believe this representation is in the painter’s subconscious, however,
it is revealing of Maria Sobral’s creed.
I’ve been talking with Maria about new artists and we think they usually aren’t
appreciated enough in our country.
In my opinion, the Ministry of Culture should urgently create a Department
to promote new national artists in and out of Portugal.
It is important to encourage Portuguese public and private enterprises to create
their own foundations and to promote and increase the patronage of the arts
so that they will invest on new artists encouraging them to work harder
and better.
Artists and gallery owners should be paid to exhibit in international Art fairs
and be represented by European and American art galleries.
This is a real effort, however, at medium term it will be a highly profitable
investment to our country both culturally and economically.
I wish Maria Mendonça a great success and I thank her for the purity
and works she offers.

And the stone that fell upon earth was enormous,
As enormous as Maria’s talent.
And the stone was green, emerald,
As precious as Maria’s generosity, her capacity to understand
and her way of facing life.
And the stone that fell from the sky was the stone of Light,
the light that oozes in changing shades from Maria’s paintings, from the softest
mildest Mediterranean light to the torrid desert light.
And the stone transformed into the Cup,
Just as Maria’s painting transforms itself, and transforms us, building new
spaces, new meanings, in a new architecture which leads us to an imaginary city.
And if the Cup leads to immortality,
Appealing to our imaginary, Maria’s art carries us into a pictoric universe full
of stories, messages and dreams, a source of probably eternal life and health…
Just as the exhibition space, the chapel of Ajuda Palace, it proposes us
an approach to and a dialogue between the Sacred and the profane (?).
May the legend not fulfil itself,
May the stone not to disappear when it falls,
But allow to open gates bridges and paths that lead us to a new meeting with
Maria’s talent, art and Friendship.

onde encontramos beleza acrescentada.
José Amaral Lopes

31. As Fernando Pessoa said “The ideal is born in our conscience because
life is imperfect”.
While searching for the ideal of rendering the world more beautiful Man finds
in Art his way to this ideal because art is “beauty added to that already existent
in the world”.
Man aims to render the world more beautiful, closer to his ideal of perfection.
Conscious of his imperfection, the ordinary man will search in vain his way
to perfection. Only the exceptional Man will carry on the path of his ideal;
only he who is different from the others has enough talent to add beauty
to the world through his art.
The purpose of art is to dignify and liberate. When dignified we become
better than we were; when liberated we are free from the imperfection
of life thus approaching the ideal.
With her art Maria helps us to search and cross the path where we can
find added beauty.

Enfim, ando, paro,
perco-me, encontro um ramo acolhedor, corro, bebo, descanso, fico.
E vou esperando
o próximo dia de verniz.
The neighbour’s neighbour Or the neighbour’s course
on a fine drying day.
I am Maria’s neighbour. Home neighbour. Profession neighbour too. I’m the
neighbour upstairs. So I’m the first to see. I mean: our building has a lift that oddly
stops between the two storeys and on drying days (I mean varnish drying which
perhaps dries much better in the stairs, just by her door. Well, these are the stories
I tell myself) I can peep from halfway up and then I come down and go in her universe
(she doesn’t know) for some moments. It’s good to escape from that sad grayish
green of the stairs recess. And I walk through the labyrinths, pass the coloured
candles at random, blacks and whites, lives and movements, some serene, some
cheerful others blunt or even hard that suddenly shut a way that seemed to me safe
and easy and open to a different one.
Feelings and unresolved things need a certain unbalance to go on. I walk, I stop,
I lose myself, I find a welcoming branch, I run, I drink, I rest, I stay.
And then, satiated, I take the lift (that was my first intention) that was waiting for
me for how long? I come down to the street, the streets of our “Monte Olivete”, so
beautiful, and they mix with the streets of Maria’s paintings that remained within me,
one foot on the ground and the other in heaven. And I wait for the next varnish day.

To my arch-enemy
Maria Sobral Mendonça
On each of those blank canvasses that I own a little Maria pours out her poetry
and her force.
The wonderful movement of her paintings, the mysticism and symbology present
in them, the Mediterranean colours and flavours, are the signs by far which make
her work strong and humble her critics.
Cautious as I am, I deeply trust in the greatness of her art, and believe that many
will envy her as of yesterday.
Ladies and gentlemen, a poet!
Ladies and gentlemen, a painter!

volta a estar presente.
Criar formas manipulando
Outras trazem-me à memória as vestimentas garridas, os panos policromáticos

39. Her practical vision doesn’t settle the rhythm of Maria Sobral Mendonça’s
daily life.
Much the reverse, this is marked by the sequence of exciting events that happen
to her family and friends. Either hilarious or sad, She is consequently
gay or unhappy.
The rhythm is also marked by the needs of those who surround her.
When they need comforting she is always there, when they want to share
their joys she’s there too.
However, when Maria needs something she immediately thinks she may be
troubling her friends. She cannot, must not disturb them with her problems.
She doesn’t say or ask anything but she is always available!
We have to guess her problems or to solemnly declare she needs something
and must accept her friends’ intromission in her world.
She never takes advantage of her knowledge.
She patiently waits for people to do her justice.
I often tell her her poetic vision of life makes it difficult to manage her property.
She invariably answers me that happens when we live to paint and from painting.
She is an indefatigable worker who has a main purpose: to see the result
of her brush movements on the canvas; to create forms manipulating the colours
and to arise emotions on other people.
Her colours reflect her states of mind.
Sometimes with blacks and whites, others with vibrant and energetic colours
and forms, among which we can see dark figures or serene and hardly sketched
beings; other times those figures are full of life, occupying the space among
the geometric forms she paints.
The palette of colours in this series reminds me of an Africa
she doesn’t know.
The warm colours evoke visions of a certain Namibe Desert.
Others bring to my mind the lively coloured garments, the African women’s
polychromatic cloths.
These paintings are sheer delight to my eyes.

O tempo decorrido. O legado dos milénios. Os sinais. As histórias.
A memória.
O Universo. As civilizações.
Rigorosos no testemunho.
Irá repousar no legado
antes assuma a eternidade.

43. Memory
Memory.
The most ancestral times , the most remote ages.
The time passed away. The legacy of millenniums. The signs. The stories.
The memory.
The Universe. The civilizations. The peoples.
Generation records passed on mouth to mouth, hand to hand.
Art as sign and as individual and collective memory.
The search for those signs and that memory as assumption of colour and line.
Ensuring the preservation of memory, assuming itself its condition of sign of that
memory. As integrant part of immemorial time.
Art as a superior form of preserving a species one doesn’t know how or when
it began to produce signs; neither how nor when it will cease to do so.
One is before a reunion of those signs, full of colour.
Rigorous witnesses. Evidence of a sensibility serving an everlasting memory.
The talent, here serving art, is the visible part of a mythical reality and will be
remembered in time and memory. It will survive so that the enjoyment
one has looking at it will not die but last eternally.
A painting exhibition is always a gathering of signs.
Those signs coming from a loving look will construct the memory of the peoples,
civilizations and the Universe.

terminando no cromatismo do deserto - podemos seguir o percurso

47. In Maria Sobral Mendonça’s varied palette - from the strong shades
of Mediterranean blue and burnt Terra de Siena to the desert colours - we can
follow the painter’s spiritual road. We can see the expression of the difficult
journey all those who seek God have to go through; a sinuous way full of barriers.
We want to reach the truth of our existence, to find the reason for a surrender
of the spiritual extent.
In some of the paintings we pass through a world of labyrinths; monastic
interiors appear with wandering figures in contemplation and prayer, figures
who look at us and almost question us; with suspended figures perhaps
in spiritual ecstasy.
Columns, gothic arches and other elements, an intricate architecture that intends
to protect Man and simultaneously eternalize his Love of God and his craving
for Eternal Life.
In other paintings we feel the energy oozing from the painter’s gestures.
They are the manifestation of surrender and exuberance in colours which do not
leave us indifferent and almost aggress us; they reflect Maria’s personality
and help us understand her huge sense of Justice and her Generosity, two carved
figures we can see - among others - in the niches of the Ajuda Palace arcades.

A outra

53. For me, a conscious admirer of Maria Sobral Mendonça’s work,
one of her many and great virtues is her permanent search for a reality
she always researches until she succeeds to give it form and colour.
Each shade in her work reminds me of the sea I’ve been secluded from a great
part of my life. The desert colours are the other. Maria Sobral Mendonça’s eyes
have a lot of the Arab look. Quite a lot of the personality that only the African
deserts can convey is printed in Maria Sobral Mendonça’s paintings. For the
deserts are not all alike, neither in form nor in colour. Each desert has its own
personality and each one, like each of Maria Sobral Mendonça’s paintings,
passes on its own message.
Maria Sobral Mendonça’s work is that - a kind of painting where prevail the colours
we can only find in the Mediterranean deserts nearby, deserts that were the cradle
of civilizations which lived seduced by the Mediterranean waters.
Both deserts and Mediterranean have a very precise and particular colour,
their own colours, although the Mediterranean is a limited sea and the deserts
are a fake picture of what we could call a woman’s land.
However if we join the dry and seemingly sterile deserts with the warm
Mediterranean waters, if we stop and admire this natural symbiotic set we will
certainly find some of the aesthethic features Maria Sobral Mendonça includes
in all her works. We can appreciate both the work which is presented today
and the steady path of the artist.
Nevertheless in each one of her pictures there is always a strong message
that floats as a mirage in the desert or a sweet song of a mermaid in the horizon
line established by the waters of the Mare Nostrum.

a name was given to me and I was insane with seduction and spirit
anointed with chastity submitted to the destiny
the instinct guided my acts and steps which rules both earth and sky

I’m afraid drawing round shapes
I move myself in the breach of the earth
among bodies that I’ve betrayed I seclude myself in the sea

Paulo Forte - Realizador
