Abstract: Brooks et al. (2003) indicated that the Southern Region of South America
has potentially favorable conditions for the development of severe weather in general.
As suggested by Fujita (1985), downbursts are meteorological phenomena recurrent
in unstable atmospheric conditions, but information about the occurrence of these
phenomena in South America are still little explored and disseminated, considering
the impact that this phenomenon causes in society due to the turbulence generated and
the strong shear and changes in the direction of the vertical velocity, the study of
downbursts is required. This paper explored the methodology proposed by Caracena
et al. (1989) for predicting humid environments where the occurrence of downbursts
is possible and apply it to the observation of a specific case occurred at 00 UTC on
May 3, 2013, in Porto Alegre - RS. The methodology described by Caracena et al.
(1989) is based on analysis of atmospheric soundings and observations, it defines that
for the occurrence of a downburst in a humid environment, more specifically one
microburst, it is necessary the fulfillment of certain factors, including the index of
convective available potential energy (CAPE), acting as a key factor for defining such
environments it should be high and positive, also other variables are include: statically
unstable environment; occurrence of clouds developed, in other words, a depth and
saturated atmospheric layer; the following atmospheric layer must be dry and its
potential equivalent temperature sufficiently low, it is also suggested that before the
occurrence of the phenomenon is no precipitation in solid form. The results observed
in surface automatic weather station in Porto Alegre, showed a wind gust 10m/s at the
time of the sounding (70% higher than the peaks recorded in the hours before and
after the sounding) and an increase in the maximum-recorded pressure on the order of
1.0hPa. The atmospheric sounding performed showed 586.6 CAPE index (relatively
high), a dry layer at 850hPa potential temperature that maintained a negative
fluctuation in addition it was noted shear and change on the direction of the vertical
velocity of the wind, though not rainfall was recorded at that time. Analyzing the data
presented, it was concluded that the studied environment was propitious to the
occurrence of downbursts according to what was proposed by the methodology
Caracena et al. (1989).

A sondagem

Gastang
