A
desenvolvemos conquistou reconhecimentos, venceu
Lançado no
âmbito do Fortalecendo a EJA, o TeleSol utiliza o mate-
A lfabetização Solidária has completed one more
year working on its mission to reduce illiteracy
rates in the country and to strengthen Youth and Adult
Education. It was one more year in which the work that
we develop achieved recognition, faced and overcame
challenges, and maintained itself firm in fulfilling its
established goals.
The results are expressive: we expanded the number
of those served considerably, having reached a mark of
5.4 million students in 2,116 municipalities in all of Brazil
and having trained over 249 thousand literacy teachers,
besides qualifying 600 public system YAE teachers
who served 14,754 students. One hundred and twenty
two thousand corrective eyeglasses have been
distributed to AlfaSol students in 10 Brazilian states.
Over1,700municipalitieshavereceivedacontextualized
collection of books and guidance in using this library,
favoring access to it so as to give incentive to reading
to at least 544 thousand students and 22 thousand
literacy teachers, as first beneficiaries, besides
enabling expanded use by the community at large.
In order to make viable all these actions, of a national
coverage, AlfaSol has a network of partners, which
todayincludes150companies,governmentalinstitutions
and international organisms as well as 76 institutes of
higher education. To these, every year newcomers join
the Organization.
We have also gained the support of the Bradesco
Foundation, the Vale Foundation, the Unibanco Institute,
the Sadia Institute, Excelsa and Enerpeixe in executing
our newest Program: TeleSol. Launched within the
ambit of Strengthening YAE, TeleSol uses the material
from the Tecendo o Saber Program of the Roberto
Marinho Foundation (FRM), which develops, with the
use of tele-drama, the contents of the 1st to 4th years of
primary education. We have concentrated seriously on
the first actions to carry out this new program, which
undoubtedly represents a definitive expansion of the
focus of our operation, and which will begin to appear
even more forcefully in the first segment of YAE.
Always attentive to the needs of specific groups,
AlfaSol has sought out new partners for developing
unprecedented projects within the Attention to
Diversity Program. One of these, carried out in
6. 6 TRAJETÓRIA
com a União Europeia e a Organização Internacional
do Trabalho (OIT), contemplou a alfabetização contex-
região mineira do Vale do Jequitinhonha. Outros dois
projetos objetivaram combater o trabalho escravo,
mente o reconhecimento do trabalho que desenvolve-
mos.
W.K. Kellogg, a “Menção Honrosa Especial” do Prêmio
CEPAL, além do prêmio especial “Hall da Fama” do Top
of Mind para Fornecedores RH 2007.
Ruth
A ela,
partnership with the European Union and the
International Labor Organization (ILO), has favored
contextualized literacy with issues of gender and race,
developed in the state of Minas Gerais in the
Jequitinhonha Valley. Another two projects have the
objective of combating slave labor, bringing together
as partners in its execution, besides ILO, the Viena
Metallurgy in Açailândia as well as the Queiroz Galvão
Group, in Santa Ines and Itapecuru Mirim. The two
projects took place in municipalities in the State of
Maranhão, one of the Brazilian states with a greater
incidence of slave labor.
The sum total of all these efforts has once again
allowed for the recognition of the work we develop. We
received from the Economic Commission for Latin
America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), with the support
of the W.K.Kellogg Foundation a “Special Honorable
Mention” of the ECLAC Prize, besides the special prize
“Hall of Fame” of the Top of Mind for HR Suppliers 2007.
Besides the prizes received, the recognition of the
actions developed by AlfaSol has manifested itself by
the invitations the Organization has received to share
itsexperiences.Inthismanner,besidestheparticipation
in general and annual conferences of the United Nations
Organization for Education, Science and Culture
(UNESCO), such as the 179th Executive Board Session /
NGO Committee held in Paris, France, for example, it
also participated in the Directors Meeting of the Pan
American Development Foundation (PADF), that took
place in Bogotá, Colombia, and at the Congreso
Iberoamericano de Alfabetización y Educación Básica
para Personas Jóvenes y Adultas, held in Havana, Cuba,
at the preparatory meeting for Confintea VI, held in
Mexico, and having as theme “From literacy to lifelong
education: challenges of the 21st century”.
In the midst of our numerous conquests, however, we
were taken by surprise by the insuperable loss of Ruth
Cardoso, to whom all the homage given will always be
insufficient to portray the greatness that her life and
work represent to Brazilian society. To her, our teacher
and founder, we dedicate this special edition, which
gathers in detail the work carried out by this
Organization over the last year.

A
plicar o conhecimento para atender o
maior número de pessoas, elevando a
qualidade de vida e diminuindo desigual-
dades. Foi baseada nesses princípios de
Dra. Ruth Cardoso que, em 1996, surgiu
a Alfabetização Solidária.
Doze
zadores, direta e indiretamente, e outros programas
pendência e eleva a autoestima. Para os alfabetiza-
dores, a capacitação oferecida pela AlfaSol e pelas IES
parceiras permitem a abertura de horizontes, a busca
por novas oportunidades educacionais e o cresci-
mento profissional.
mento do capital humano e social e a implantação e
a prática sustentada do investimento social privado
estratégico.
T
o apply knowledge in order to attend a greater
number of people while elevating life quality and
diminishing inequalities. It was based on these
principles of Ruth Cardoso that Alfabetização Solidária
was launched in 1996. Since then, this non profit and
of public interest civil society organization, generated
with the support of an unprecedented system of
partnerships, has gathered, in favor of its objective to
diminish the alarming illiteracy rates in the country,
institutes of higher education (IHE), companies, the
several levels of governments – federal, state and
municipal – as well as members of civil society.
In its first year in operation, AlfaSol attended 9.2
thousand students and trained 442 literacy teachers in
38 municipalities of the North and Northeast Regions
of Brazil. Twelve years later these numbers have
multiplied geometrically: about 5.4 million students
have been attended in 2,116 municipalities where over
249thousandliteracyteachershaveundergonetraining,
directly and indirectly, and other programs were set up
and implemented, geared to expanding impacts and to
support public policies.
The results of this joint operation have permitted
an intense circulation of knowledge, which has had
repercussion in innumerable forms, benefiting all
those involved in the actions. For the students attended
by the Organization’s programs, the literacy process,
facilitated by carrying out simultaneous projects such
as the Ver and the Incentive to Reading Projects,
gene-rates greater independence and heightens self
esteem. For the literacy teachers, the training offered
by AlfaSol and by the IHE partners have allowed a
broadening of horizons, the search for new educational
opportunities, and professional growth. For the states
and municipalities, besides the improvement of human
development indicators and diminishing illiteracy,
there is the strengthening of human and social capital
as well as the structuring of YAE policies. For the IHE
partners, the contact with different realities found in
each of the municipalities that are served has resulted
in the possibility of making a practical application of
acquired knowledge, finding innumerable objects
to develop new and hitherto unpublished academic
studies. And for the companies, besides being able to
get a closer knowledge of Brazilian reality, the work has
led to structuring policies that represent a sustainable
practice of strategic private social investment.

RECONHECIMENTO NACIONAL E INTERNACIONAL
e a Cultura (UNESCO).
dentre outros.
oficial na abertura da “White House Conference on the
NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION
The successful operational model, sustained by the
innovative system of partnerships, that enables an
easy to replicate system, has conferred on AlfaSol
several commendations throughout its institutional
history. In 2005, for example, it was the first Brazilian
organization of the Third Sector to be admitted as an
affiliate by the Organization of the United Nations for
Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO). Until 2008,
of the se-veral prizes received since its foundation, we
highlight the following: in 2007, the Special Honorable
Mention of the Economic Commission for Latin America
and the Caribbean (ECLAC), created with the objective
of identifying and recognizing innovative initiatives
in the field of social development, so as to propagate
experiences and contribute towards improving
practices and social policies of the people of the Latin
American and Caribbean countries; and the Dubai 2007
Prize, an initiative of United Nations program, UN-
Habitat, and the Together Foundation, that considered
AlfaSol one of the 126 best in the world in the field
of environmental and quality of life improvement. In
2004, another 2 prizes: the UNESCO King Sejong, which
recognized AlfaSol as one of the best literacy practices
in the world, and the OREALC Innovemos Network,
that indicated the Organization as one of the 10 most
successful literacy practices by UNESCO. In 2002 it
received the Best Practice Certificate, chosen one of
the 40 best institutions in the world, among others.
TheworkcarriedoutbyAlfaSolobtainedtherecognition
of the First Lady of the United Stated, Laura Bush who,
besides visiting the Organization when she came to
Brazil in March 2007, affirmed, in her official lecture
on the opening of the “White House Conference on
the Americas” that discussed social actions involving
the United States and other countries of the American
continents, that she was impressed by the successful
model for mobilizing the communities and partners
conducted by AlfaSol, as well as by the expressive
results presented by the Organization.
Besides its affiliation to UNESCO through technical
cooperation involving the Brazilian Cooperation Agency
(ABC), an organ of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
AlfaSol has cooperated in structuring literacy programs
in other countries, both Portuguese speaking ones,
such as East Timor, Cape Verde, Mozambique and São
Tomé and Principe, as well as in Spanish speaking ones
such as Guatemala.

programa: o TeleSol. Lançado no âmbito do Fortalecen-
do a EJA, o TeleSol utiliza o material do Tecendo o
Cabe a ele instigar
gerando atividades a serem desenvolvidas dentro e
fora das salas de aula.

player to the classrooms in order to reproduce the tele-
classes, made up of 75 videos, as well as 12 books, eight
of which are for the students and four for the teachers.
On the videos, stories are told that reflect the reality
lived by the students, speaking of migrating to great
urban centers, the difficulties in getting a job, among
other themes. Within these stories, multidisciplinary
issues are inserted as well as modern themes, such as
environment, citizenship and health, for example.
The videos function as support material for the classes,
which do not dismiss the mediation of a teacher
from the public school system. It is his responsibility
to instigate the students by means of the themes
presented, generating activities to be developed both
in and out of the classrooms.

No
“O TeleSol
Assim,
“As pessoas
estão ouvindo falar do programa e estão querendo efe-
tivar a matrícula no curso”, informa.
ção Bradesco e, segundo a Secretária, a metodolo-
Sol traz muitas novidades e conhecimentos.
possibilidades”, conta.
TeleSol’s didactic material has been well received by the
educators. Maria Telma Oliveira Nascimento, a 23 year
old teacher in Youth and Adult Education in Heliópolis,
State of Bahia, with three years experience in YAE, has
approved the material. In this Bahiano municipality, the

since it works with the adult student’s reality”, she says.
She highlights the excellent quality of the videos that, in
heropinion,facilitatetheworkoftheteacherandpermit
him to explore other activities and dynamics within
the classroom, making the classes more interesting.
“I believe that TeleSol methodology will contribute
towards keeping the student studying”, she says.
Isael Macedo Neto, the mayor of Caracol, in the State
of Piaui, which works with a partnership of the Sadia
Institute and AlfaSol, believes that due to the fact that a
differentiated methodologyisused,theprogramallows
the student to feel more valorized and stimulates him to
continue studying. “Here in Caracol the students work
very much all day and, for this reason, it is important
that classes have a more dynamic methodology. In this
manner they take more advantage of the time in which
they study”, he highlights. He says that TeleSol has

“People have been hearing about the program and have
been seeking to register in the course”, he informs.

also says that the teachers like the TeleSol material very
much. “It is very rich and interesting and the stories
presented in the videos contribute towards avoiding
dropouts in YAE”, she tells us. This opinion is also shared
by Rejane de Oliveira Silva Nascimento of the Education
Secretariat of Senador Rui Palmeira, in the State of
Alagoas. This municipality is attended by AlfaSol in
partnershipwiththeBradescoFoundationand,according
to the Secretariat, by portraying the reality in which
the students live, the TeleSol methodology contributes
not only to the learning in itself, but also acts as an
extra stimulus for them to finish the course. “Many of
them never saw a DVD and some of them do not have
television at home and, for this reason, TeleSol brings
much knowledge and many novelties. And, to complete
this, students can leave the chalk and blackboard
routine, bringing new possibilities to the classroom”,

a metodologia do curso porque muitas vezes acordei
cedo para acompanhar aulas pela televisão. As situa-

“As histórias apresen-
sociais”, diz.
In Nova Era, State of Minas Gerais, where the program
is carried out with the Vale Foundation, TeleSol’s 61
year old student, Maria das Mercês Souza Menezes, is
very excited. When she was a child she did start going
to school, but she had so much difficulty learning that
her mother took her out of school. Now, registered
in one of TeleSol’s groups, planned for 18 months,
Maria has been anxiously awaiting contact with the
videos. “I know the methodology of the course because
many times I would wake up early to follow classes
on television. The situations are the same as those we
undergo, so there’s no way of not knowing the meaning
of a word that we hear. For this reason I am very
happy because the videos are in the classroom where
I study”, she tells us, adding that ever since she received
the books of the program she couldn’t wait till she could
use them.
Support by IHE – For the pedagogical coordinator of
the State University of Ceará (UECE), Maria Ielda Costa
Sobreira, present at the I Meeting for Qualifying YAE
Qualifiers, held by AlfaSol in partnership with the
Roberto Marinho Foundation (read in box page 15), the
material is very adequate for the communities for
whom they are geared to. “The center of the proposal
is the student and it is interconnected with the reality
of the people who study at YAE”, she says. According
to the UECE coordinator, because it is based on Freire’s
principles, TeleSol brings forth a methodology that
demands collective, creative and contextualized work,
thus contributing towards the development of a
critical spirit. “In this manner, this YAE student can
really become a participative citizen, able to promote
changes in society”, she tells us. In Professor Ielda’s
opinion, TeleSol also brings with it another advantage:
the opportunity for teachers and students to come in
contact with more up to date technological resources,
such as TVs and DVDs.
Whereas Professor Catarina de Sena Sirqueira M. da
Costa, of the Federal University of the state of Piauí,
explains that the material used by TeleSol allows the
students to identify themselves with the situations
presented in the narratives, principally the difficulties
they face by not mastering the written language. “The
stories presented in daily chapters in the classrooms
create and expectation that arouses the student’s
interest, at the same time as it presents work that is
scientifically up to date, bringing with it linguistic and
social theories”, she says.

PARTNERSHIPS GUARANTEE TELESOL
EXECUTION
Besides the Vale Foundation, other AlfaSol
partner companies also support TeleSol,
implementing them in the municipalities where
they maintain programs in partnership with
AlfaSol. This is the case of Unibanco Institute,
Bradesco Foundation, Sadia Institute, Escelsa e
Enerpeixe, that adhered to the program already
in the first semester.
For the superintendent of the Unibanco
Institute, Wanda Engel, all the stages carried
out in the work together with AlfaSol have
brought even more force and recognition of
the good operation of the Organization in favor
of youth and adult education. “And TeleSol
has been innovating teacher training in youth
and adult education that is attended within
the ambit of the Strengthening YAE Program.
In this manner, we believe that the project
can effectively strengthen YAE public policy
and sustainable local action, which are the
fundamental pillars of the project”, she says.
For the Bradesco Foundation, the TeleSol
Program makes use of technology in favor of
a more creative, autonomous and interactive
teaching and learning. According to the
directress of the Bradesco Foundation, Denise
Aguiar Alvarez Valente, the expectations as
regards the program are the best possible,
since TeleSol is based on a solid pedagogical
experience that mobilizes youth and adults
towards constructing and reorganizing their
knowledge, recovering, in this manner the
process of schooling of these people and
qualifying them to conscientiously exert
themselves in the exercise their citizenship.
Because they believe that Education is the basis
to overcome social inequality, the Bradesco
Foundation has been giving support since 1998
to the programs and projects developed by
Alfabetização Solidária. “The importance of this
partnership in the harmony of the philosophy
developed by AlfaSol with the Bradesco
Foundation mission to promote social inclusion,
principally of the socially and economically less
favored population, through basic education,
acting as a generating and multiplying force
for education and culture”, affirms director
Denise Aguiar.
PARCERIAS GARANTEM A EXECUÇÃO DO TELESOL
É o caso do
Instituto Unibanco, Fundação Bradesco, Instituto Sadia, Escelsa
e Enerpeixe, que aderiram ainda no primeiro semestre do ano.
Para a superintendente do Instituto Unibanco, Wanda Engel, to-
Fortalecendo a EJA.

desenvolvimento do TeleSol. Além de pesquisadores e técnicos
da Fundação Roberto Marinho (FRM) e AlfaSol, participaram do
alunos, público-alvo do projeto”.

do vício.

only 13 years old and, because of his involvement with
alcohol, he abandoned school. At 16 he was already an
alcoholic and neither marriage nor a new employment
as a guard at the only bank branch in the municipality
took him away from his vice. My life was terrible. I used
to drink so much that I would break things at home and
would often fight with my wife”, he tells us, affirming
that the vice was breaking up his family life. José

José Cosme se tornou presidente, e o tio, tesoureiro.
O desafio, no entanto, estava apenas começando. A

a Sra.
Combat Alcoholism Association of Riachão do Dantas
(Ascard) was founded, with José Cosme as president
and his uncle as treasurer. The challenge, however,
was just beginning. The fact that he couldn’t read
impeded gaining a deeper knowledge of methods and
techniques to give continuity to Ascard’s work. And so
he got the idea to register in AlfaSol’s literacy course in
2006.Fromthattimetonowmanythingshavechanged,
principally in the number of Ascard’s associates,
who meet on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays to
work together on overcoming the vice of alcoholism.
On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays the associates
attend classes of the first segment of YAE, made
possible with the support of the Education Secretariat
of the Municipal government of Riachão do Dantas,
which has made a teacher available to teach the
associates. The group also gives lectures to combat
the vice of alcoholism at schools and communities,
always maintaining contact with other groups of
Alcoholics Anonymous as a form of strengthening the
work that is carried out.
Another important activity developed by Ascard is
also José Cosme’s initiative. Since getting a job in
the city is difficult, he created a guard service for the
streets of the municipality, resulting in income for 14
associates. We also developed other social actions,
such as collecting food and clothing among dwellers
and the local commerce in order to hand this out to
those who need it”, he tells us.
For José Cosme, AlfaSol is a part of the history of
Ascard. “Through this Organization we met Mrs.
Olinta Cardoso, at that time superintendent of the
Vale Foundation, who indicated us to participate in
a course for entrepreneurial qualification in Rio de
Janeiro, which has greatly helped us in our work at
the Association”, he tells us. Today he feels happy
in having overcome vice and being able to help
others to also overcome this difficulty.
José Cosme’s story demonstrates how the knowledge
of just one person can irradiate and expand to benefit
other people, modifying the reality of the community
in which the individual is inserted. And in the same
way that his life was transformed by literacy,
another 5.4 million youths and adults, attended in
2,116 municipalities, also had the same opportunity to
modify the courses of their lives and help their own
communities to rewrite their stories.

NOVAS PERSPECTIVAS PARA OS ALFABETIZADORES
Ampliar as perspectivas de vida, abrindo novas oportu-
nidades pessoais e profissionais.
Passo Fundo (UPF), do Rio Grande do Sul, instituição
Jackson conheceu a educadora Lorita Maria Weschen-
felder, coordenadora pedagógica e professora da
UPF.
A experiên-

desenvolvo é colaborativa e contempla o 1º segmento do Ensino
The experience at AlfaSol was the object
of study of his dissertation, which was
later transformed into a book “Emancipating
Pedagogy – an experience in education of young,
adult and elderly persons”, published by UPF.
After finishing his Master’s in Rio Grande
do Sul he went back to Bahia, where he was
qualified to lecture on Education Management
in the field of YAE, at the Sate University of
the Southeast of Bahia (UESB).
And this was not all. The academic life of José
Jackson is – literally – taking him to other
territories. First he crossed the country,
going from Rio Grande do Sul where he did
his Master’s, to Rio Grande do Norte, where
he did his Doctorate, also in the field of Youth
and Adult Education, at the Federal University
of Rio Grande do Norte in the city of Natal. “It
was a different experience than that which I
had in Rio Grande do Sul, but it was equally
important. There is a very strong scientific
production in Rio Grande do Norte, strongly
focused on research development”, he says.
And now, for the next year, the young man
born in Tucano has fixed a destination: the
University of Lisbon, where he has been
accepted to develop theoretical studies on
Youth and Adult Education, from February to
August 2009. “I sent in a study project and it
was approved”, he tells us. The result of the
research carried out in Portugal will be added
to the studies made in Brazil to elaborate his
thesis, which is, at present, at the qualifying
stage. “The research I am developing is
collaborative and is based on the 1st Segment
of YAE primary education”, he summarizes.
José Jackson acknowledges that if AlfaSol
had not arrived in Tucano, none of this would
have happened in his life. “Today, all I think of
and study is related to YAE”, he points out.
In the opinion of Professor Lorita, who
invited José Jackson to study in Rio Grande

cacional. “Sempre tive vontade de lecionar, e esse
primeiro trabalho como alfabetizadora me deu essa
certeza”, conta.
estudos. Prestou vestibular para Matemática, na
Universidade Estadual do Vale do Acaraú (UVA), e
“Adorei as capacitações.
futuro, Silvana pretende continuar desenvolvendo o
trabalho de professora. “É o que realmente gosto de
fazer”, conclui.
long as one has objective conditions. “José Jackson with
his life story leaves the community where he lives and
goes to another cultural context to continue his academic
qualification. After achieving this qualification he returns
to his region and expands this qualification further”, says
Professor Lorita, adding that AlfaSol represents this
possibility of awareness-action movements in the daily
struggle for emancipation, “because in order to make
dreams come true, it is necessary to have opportunities”.
Arousing vocations
For 23 year old Silvana Araújo dos Santos, to become an
AlfaSol literacy teacher allowed her to meet her vocation.
“I had always wanted to teach and this first work as a
literacy teacher has given me this certainty”, she tells us.
In 2005, after going through a selection process by the
Municipal Secretariat for Education of Riachão do Dantas
(SE), Silvana started teaching a group of youngsters and
adults in Banana do Mato settlement in the rural area of
the city. At that time she had only a secondary education
and participated in the qualifying activity carried out by
the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS) an AlfaSol partner
in executing programs in that Sergipe municipality.
Besides confirming her vocation, this experience made
Silvana take the decision to continue her studies. She
took the entrance exams for Mathematics at the State
University of the Vale do Acaraú (UVA) and passed.
Today she participates in a special group set up by UVA in
Lagarto, which has classes on Saturdays and Sundays and
is already in the fifth period. In order to make her studies
possible, besides working in the Sergipe Alfabetizado
program, which is developed in partnership with the
government of the State of Sergipe and AlfaSol, Silvana
also works as monitor in the Program for Eradicating
child Labor (PETI), of Riachão do Dantas. During the day,
I work at PETI, at night I am at the literacy course and on
weekends at the university”, she tells us.
The training activities in which she participates have
been fundamental for Silvana. It is in these that she
finds inspiration to create the dynamics that she
develops in the classrooms and which are fundamental
to maintaining the students in class. “I loved the
trainings. I learned a lot, principally how to work with
the texts with the students, how to use recycling in
the classroom, and even music, which was one of
themes I liked most during the last training in which
I participated”, she tells us. In the future, Silvana
intends to continue developing work as a teacher. “It is
what I really like to do”, she concludes.

governo – federal, estadual e municipal. Os resulta-
dos positivos dessas ações extrapolaram as fronteiras
brasileiras e novas parcerias, com órgãos públicos e
organismos internacio-
nais foram estabelecidas.

or some time Brazil has already been assisting
a great mobilization of civil society, strongly
pledged to point out solutions that could
diminish the social differences that still exist in
the country. That is because, as Ruth Cardoso well
summarized, Brazilian society does not expect that all
solutions should come from the State any more: the
community itself indicates the way and implements
solutions. And this movement, of which Ruth Cardoso
was one of the precursors and knew so well how to
capitalize on in favor of the social causes she
embraced, gathered around the proposal to reduce he
high rates of illiteracy in the country, members of civil
society, institutions of higher education, companies
and private institutions, as well as the three levels of
government – federal, state, and municipal. The
positive results of these actions extrapolate Brazilian

INSTITUIÇÕES DE ENSINO SUPERIOR E ALFASOL:
PARCERIA FUNDAMENTAL
volvimento Humano (IDH), fomentando pesquisas
Superior (IES) parceiras.
E,paraaeducadoradaUniversidadedePassoFundo
(UPF), Lorita Maria Weschenfelder, essa influência
tem acontecido, principalmente, pela forma como
a AlfaSol estabelece as relações com as institui-
condução do processo de formação inicial e conti-
nuada nas localidades onde coordenam programas
e projetos.
INSTITUTES OF HIGHER EDUCATION AND
ALFASOL: A FUNDAMENTAL PARTNERSHIP
Approximating the academic milieu to the localities
with the lowest Human Development Indicators
(HDI), and fomenting research in the field of Youth
and Adult Education (YAE), has been one of the
most visible results of the partnership involving
AlfaSol and the Institutes of Higher Education (IHE)
partnerships.
And, for the educator of Passo Fundo University
(UPF), Lorita Maria Weschenfelder, this influence
has occurred principally because of the form
in which AlfaSol establishes relations with the
institutes of higher education and the manner in
which these, in their turn, operate in conducting
the process of initial and continued formation in
the localities where they coordinate programs
and projects. “The reach of the Organization goes

A influência
alunos”, explica a Profª Lorita.
educadores analisaram o processo teórico-metodo-
much further than the beginning and the end of literacy
courses, since the impacts continue happening even in
those municipalities that are not being directly served
by the partnership”, she points out. Due to these
numerous spinoffs, she affirms that it is difficult to
fathom the amplitude of the positive marks at all levels
of the work carried out by AlfaSol.
The educator Lolita exemplifies this influence
mentioning UPF itself, which registers a strong
increase in the number of academic work connected to
Youth and Adult Education (YAE). “Students from other
areas such as Mathematics and Physical Education are
carrying out studies that have YAE as their theme,
both in Specialization and in Master’s studies. Three of
the professors who worked in municipalities in Bahia
worked on their Master’s having as their research
the experience carried out, which has resulted in
the publication of three books”, she tells us. And, of
course, in the Pedagogical field the influence of the
partnership with AlfaSol is even more intense. “Among
the students who finish the course, we have many
end-of-course papers focused on YAE. The influence
has also generated an even greater transformation
since, because there had been a great demand for
the three YAE disciplines, which were optional in the
Pedagogy course, when the curricular reform of UPF
came up, YAE was included as an obligatory discipline,
in this manner attending the wishes of the students”,
Professor Lorita explains.
The UPF educator herself is a good example of this
positive influence of AlfaSol in academic production.
Together with Professors Maria Helena Weschenfelder
and José Jackson Reis dos Santos (see his story on
page 17) she published a book “Adults also have rights:
from illiteracy to a policy for education”, besides having
written various articles presented at scientific events.
One of these was the work entitled “Initial and continued
formation in Alfabetização Solidária: an emancipating
living experience”, in which one of the educators
analyzes the theoretic and methodological process
experienced in the context of continued formation
of the educators in the municipalities of Euclides da
Cunha, Ribeira do Pombal and Tucano, situated in the
north of the state of Bahia, which were served by the
university in partnership with AlfaSol.
According to her, since the beginning of the literacy
process, as a premise, the university worked together
with the Municipal Education Secretariats of these

tica local”, explica a Profª Lorita.
a elaboração do Projeto Político Pedagógico (PPP).
localities, which assumed the principles of the
pedagogical proposal suggested by UPF. The
municipalitieswereorganizedinsectorsandeachsector
started having cyclic formation activities, guaranteeing
a permanent and systematic formation of UPF and the
literacy teachers. She tells us that this political and
pedagogical experience assured two methodological
elements: the production of fragments of life histories
and writing the memories referring to the practices
of the literacy teachers involved. “It is for this reason
that I say that AlfaSol is a part of the history of the
education of these municipalities since, even after the
work is done, it has left its mark on the localities served,
which now assume YAE as a local policy”, she explains.
In every phase - The partnerships with IHEs involve all
stages of execution of the programs and projects. They
are co-responsible, together with AlfaSol for qualified
training and formation of the literacy teachers and the
public school teachers, as well as the follow up of the
classes given in the municipality. This is always done
with the staff of AlfaSol’s Department for Pedagogical
Formation and Follow up (DFAP) but the IHEs have
the autonomy to choose the pedagogical theories and
practices within the ambit of the guiding principles for
elaborating the Political and Pedagogical Project (PPP).
It is also the responsibility of the IHEs to select the
literacy teachers, mobilize the students, to evaluate
earning as well as to interlink with the Municipal
EducationSecretariatssoastostructureandstrengthen
YAE policies in the localities, always with AlfaSol’s
follow up.

nacional.
terlocutores do site.
As
redações percorrem algumas etapas eliminatórias e são,
então, disponibilizadas no site do Cereja para votação do
alfabetizandos atendidos no Brasil inteiro.
mento Penitenciário Nacional (Depen), órgão do Ministério

to participate by submitting scientific texts, articles
related to the work, monographs, and book reviews
on Youth and Adult Education. Seven editions have
already been launched and soon the eighth will
be ready.
Essay Contest - Cereja also coordinates another
important action developed by AlfaSol. It is the
Essay Contest, held annually, in which AlfaSol’s
literacy teachers and students are invited to write a
text about a previously defined theme. The essays
undergo some previous eliminatory stages and are
then made available on the Cereja site to be voted on
by a popular jury, which indicates the best student
and teacher text according to the number of votes
received. There is still another evaluation made by
the National Commission, which elects six essays,
three from students and three from teachers.
In 2008 the theme of the 9th Essay Contest was
“Stories that I now can write”. Through this theme

the communities previously transmitted orally. It
is also a form of registering and divulging, through
writing, the diversity of experiences lived by literacy
students and teachers working in all of Brazil.
In 2007, Cereja was called on to coordinate the
Essay Contest “Writing Liberty”, an unprecedented
initiative promoted by Alfabetização Solidária and
by the National Penitentiary Department (DEPEN),
an organ of the Ministry of Justice in partnership
with UNESCO and the Education Ministry (MEC). The
essays of the finalists were also gathered in a book

LIÇÃO DE PERSEVERANÇA
A ureliano Pereira Coutinho, 52 years old, and
Deusimar Maria Ferreira Costa, 50 years
old, were students this year in classes given by
the literacy teacher, Cleide Cristiane Barbosa,
26 years old in a classroom implemented by the
Dwellers’ Association of Boqueirão, in a settlement of
the same name within the rural area of Teresina, in the
state of Piauí.
Cleide says she was impressed by the will power of the
two students who, in spite of their age and the fatigue
after a whole day’s work, participated so intensely in
the classes that they were the first to learn how to read
and write. “Besides maintaining themselves motivated
they also helped to stimulate the other students that
were threatening to abandon the course”. she tells us.
“Even for me that am still young their will power was
a real lesson in perseverance”, she completes, adding
that it helped the students to prepare a descriptive
memorial about their life histories to present at the
closing ceremonies of the course, which ended in
August. Incidentally, the construction of this memorial
was one of the activities that attracted the attention of
the students and helped keep them in class.
According to the literacy teacher, the students would
each day write a piece of their own history, in a
chronological manner and, in this manner, each one
began to remember his life and experiences: happiness,
sadness, and conquests in a process that ended up
rekindling the students’ self-esteem.
On writing her story, Deusimar, for example, was
surprised as she discovered that yes, she was an
important person in “this world”. She says that since
she always was a housewife, she thought that her life
was boring and unimportant. “Today I know that, even
though I only work at home, it is important to know how
to read, write and carry on a conversation, so that I can
also be an example to my children because for them I
am really an important person”, she explains.
ForCleide,theliteracyteacher,besidestheretrospective
that they made on their lives, the memorial is a proof of
how the students really absorb the teaching that they
receive in class. “They became very enthusiastic when I
told them that they would have a graduating ceremony,
which ended up as moment of great happiness for all,”
she concluded.
O
s alunos Aureliano Pereira Coutinho, 52 anos,
e Deusimar Maria Ferreira Costa, 50 anos,
a aprender a ler e escrever. “Além de se manterem mo-
tivados, eles ainda me ajudavam a estimular os outros
pessoa importante “nesse mundo”.

cas, e resultados positivos interessam a toda sociedade.
ofertadas e ampliando a qualificação do processo
ensino-aprendizagem.
Distrito Federal (região Centro-Oeste); e Santa Catari-
na (região Sul). Apenas em 2008, direta e indireta-
mente, a AlfaSol atendeu nesses Estados 77.382 alunos,
COMMON GOALS GUARANTEE
GOVERNMENTAL PARTNERSHIPS
To make alliances with the three levels of government
– federal, state, and municipal – is an activity that is
inhe-rent to the work developed by Alfabetização
Solidária. This is so because the mission to reduce
the rates of illiteracy is a goal that is shared also by
the public institutions and the result is of interest
to all of society. And, besides promoting service in
literacy classes for youth and adults, AlfaSol foments,
directly and indirectly, the increase of Youth and Adult
Education, by the impact it exercises on public policies,
contributing to an increase in the number of vacancies
offered and expanding the qualification of the teaching-
learning process.
In order to attend the specification of each partner,
new programs and projects were created by the
Organization, which, by means of partnerships with
public and private institutions, is present in Brazilian
States: São Paulo, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro and
Minas Gerais (South West region); Maranhão, Alagoas,
Pernambuco, Ceará, Sergipe, Piauí, Paraíba and Bahia
(Northeast region); Tocantins and Pará (Northern
region); Mato Grosso and the Federal District
(Center-West region), and Santa Catarina (Southern
region). AlfaSol attended in these States, directly and
indirectly, just in 2008, 77,382 students, divided in
literacy and youth and adult classes, while qualifying
3,878 educators, which include literacy teachers as well
public school teachers.
In Sergipe, Alagoas and the Federal District, AlfaSol’s
work involves all the municipalities of these States,
since the partnership was signed with the State
Education Secretariats. In Espirito Santo, however,
AlfaSol’s work has been giving support to constructing
a literacy and Youth and Adult Education policy, with the
main objective being the development of an evaluation
methodology in the State. A similar action has occurred
in Santa Catarina, where AlfaSol has contributed in
elaborating a Strategic Plan for Literacy, which is
already being carried out.
Due to the unique characteristics of the programs and
projects carried out by AlfaSol, the partnerships that
have been signed with the State Education Secretariats
do not impede establishing new agreements involving
the municipalities. This is the case with Teresina,
capital of the State of Piauí where AlfaSol develops the

Centros Urbanos.
“A prefeitura
Washington Bonfim.

tenelle, o êxito obtido
pela parceria certamente
está relacionado à pro-
posta pedagógica adota-
da pela AlfaSol, pois nela
o conhecimento de mun-
do dos alfabetizandos é
o ponto de partida que
fomenta as discussões
e as produções escri-
resse espontaneamente”, conclui ela.
National Literacy Program, but that, since 2005, has a
partnership with the Organization for carrying out the
Great Urban Centers Project. Since then 1,370 students
in 44 classes have been attended. After a first stage,
the partnership was renewed to attend 32 new classes,
which by the end of 2008 had benefited another 800
students. In order to carry out this work, AlfaSol counts
on the partnership with FederalUniversityofPiauí (UFPI).
According to the municipal Secretary of Education and
Culture of Teresina, Washington Bonfim, the dedication
of all those involved has guaranteed the success of this
partnership insofar as it offers to youth and adults
in the Piauí capital quality education. “Teresina’s city
government has given priority to the investment in
quality education, since we believe that it is only in
this way that we can change the social reality of our
country”, affirms Washington Bonfim.
For Sunamita Machado
Fontenelle, coordinator
of the PGCU Group of
Teresina, Module 2008,
the success obtained
by the partnership is
certainly related to
the pedagogical proposal
adopted by AlfaSol,
since in it the knowedge
oftheworldoftheliteracy
students is the starting
point that foments the
discussions and written
productions that occur in
the classroom. “With this, the knowledge that students
have constructed throughout their lives are valorized
as well as their values, their history and this finds
immediate identification with the themes that are
approached”, the coordinator emphasizes, adding that
the literacy students see themselves as protagonists
in their history, which is being constructed daily in the
literacy classrooms. The interest of the students in
continuing their studies in the YAE groups also called
the coordinator’s attention. “In all of my visits to the
classes of the group it was unnecessary to tell them
how important it was to continue studying, since they
already spontaneously demonstrated this interest”,
she concluded. It is due to this desire for continuity
that the municipal government of Tersina has signed
another agreement with AlfaSol for carrying out
another municipal Youth and Adult Education (YAE)
Pelas características singulares dos pro-
gramas e projetos realizados pela AlfaSol,
as parcerias firmadas com as secretarias
estaduais de Educação não impedem o esta-
belecimento de novos acordos envolvendo os
municípios. // Due to the unique characteristics
of the programs and projects carried out by
AlfaSol, the partnerships that have been signed
with the State Education Secretariats do not
impede establishing new agreements involving
the municipalities.
