The document summarizes the BHL-SciELO Network, which involves major Brazilian institutions and libraries with relevant biodiversity collections. It was created to contribute to the development of national biodiversity scientific information infrastructure by collecting, describing, storing, retrieving, and making interoperable different types of biodiversity documents. The network aims to improve access to both digital and historical paper-based biodiversity literature from Brazil. It is aligned with national research policies and addresses gaps in managing and providing online access to important collections. The network has established governance and is affiliated with the global Biodiversity Heritage Library. It has digitized over 800 documents so far and expects to digitize around 2000 more documents by the end of 2015, pending further funding

2. • The proposal to create the BHL-SciELO Network was
formulated and promoted by the Museum of Zoology /USP,
the Brazilian Zoology Society and the SciELO Program
• Its implementation was discussed and recommended at a
researchers’ meeting organized by the Brazilian Zoology Society
during the COP-8 /CDB held in Curitiba, Paraná, in 2006 and has
come a long way until its launch on December 1st, 2010
Origins
• the Secretariat of Biodiversity and Forests of the Ministry of the
Environment funded the scanning infrastructure and the São Paulo State
Research Foundation (FAPESP) funded the organization, processing and
publication of the information sources
3. BHL-SciELO - Network : Objective
to contribute to the development of national
infrastructure of scientific information on biodiversity
through
the collection, description, storage, retrieval and
interoperability of the different types of
scientific documents on Biodiversity.
4. BHL – SciELO : background and motivations 1/2
• aligned with National and State research policies that support the
development of biodiversity study, research and conservation
• generation, dissemination and access to scientific information and
knowledge is essential for the future of Brazil that stands out
worldwide for its biodiversity, socio-biodiversity and economic
production based on Biodiversity
• access to up-to-date worldwide scientific information is available
through the Ministry of Education’ Journals Portal
• ~ 25% of the Brazilian scientific research on Biodiversity is
communicated by nationally published journals and a selection of
them is indexed and published in open access by SciELO
5. BHL – SciELO : background and motivations 2/2
• However, the Biodiversity Literature management in Brazil
lacks online availability and access to relevant and historical
documents of important paper-based collections from key
institutions and libraries in the area of Biodiversity
• To fill this gap exhaustively was one of the motivations and objectives of
the creation of BHL-SciELO Network, whose initial project had as one of
its expected results scanning over 2000 relevant works on Biodiversity.
About one thousand is already scanned but pending indexing.
• Also to improve interoperability between concepts present in texts with
taxonomic and collections catalogs
6. BHL – SciELO : implementation and operation principles
• rationality of the library - qualified contents and services and
operation through a cooperative network of institutions - libraries
