9. This small area of Tijuca is called USINA.
Do you know why? In 1892 there weren’t
many houses in this area but there was an
important power plant responsible for the
distribution of electricity to the trams in
Rio Janeiro. These are some of the oldest
photos of the power plant and the trams in
Usina.

12. In the 19th century this area of Tijuca was
calmer and greener than today. Now there
are more people living here and the traffic is
heavier because people take this route when
they go to Barra da Tijuca. So the air is
more polluted and the main street, Conde de
Bonfim,is much noisier. However, a big part
of the Tijuca forest is still preserved and
tourists come here to visit it.
