Quality certificates
Type code shows output current and input voltage
Power and current ratings apply to most 4-pole motors according to IEC, NEMA and other standards
Dual ratings in same drive – normal duty and heavy-duty ratings with overload cycles.
Enables wider range of applications.
Truly global product. One drive usable in all countries. Robust performance in all networks
Easy connection to factory automation systems through multiple I/Os and plug-in options – reduces installation cost and time
Two internal option card slots allow for the addition of commonly specified modifications without requiring expensive, enlarged enclosures
More flexibility with freely programmable I/O – wide range of applications. No need for external devices – less installation cost
More information: I/O features
All fieldbus are embedded or mechanically installed within drive
Modbus is the embedded fieldbus (EIA-485)
Ethernet Modbus TCP means that there is no website service in the module and it cannot be used through internet.
The fieldbus concept of the ACS550 emphasizes easy installation and space saving. The fieldbuses are either embedded or mechanically installed inside the drive. Modbus as an embedded fieldbus is included as standard in every unit. Optional fieldbuses are Profibus, DeviceNet, Lon Works, ControlNet, CANOpen, CC-Link and Ethernet, which connects the drive to a control system through a local Ethernet network.
No panel (panel cover in IP54/UL Type12 versions)
Assistant Control Panel (ACS-CP-C)
Basic Control Panel (ACS-CP-A)
ACS550 standard delivery
Control panel concept:
Two different panel variants, make a choice based on your needs
The control panel can be easily detached without the need of tools
The IP54 / UL Type 12 enclosure rating remains also without a panel
The most intuitive user interface among AC drives
Start-Up Assistant supporting you during the commissioning and configuration process
Motor setup, application, start / stop control, speed control, Protection functions, Output signal configuration
Start-up assistant guides the user through all essential settings to be done without going directly into the parameter list – No need to remember details just answering to questions assistants is posing
Timer Assistant helps in using timed functions
Serial Communication Assistant
Easy and straightforward fieldbus setup
PID Assistant
Performance assistant for optimizing the performance in terms of motor control accuracy, motor noise, system efficiency or EMC compliance
Maintenance assistant
Selectable maintenance criteria:
kWh
running hours
motor rotation (Mrev = Mega revolutions)
Diagnostic assistant
Monitors : DC - bus voltage, speed, current, change of speed,…
e.g.: high DC - bus voltage and decelerating and power flow is from motor to drive – Panel suggests : “use brake resistors or increase deceleration ramp time”
The Assistant Control Panel, which is delivered as standard with the ACS550, features a multilingual alphanumeric display for easy drive programming. The control panel has various assistants and an inbuilt help function to guide the user. It also includes a real time clock, which can be used during fault logging and in controlling the drive, such as starting and stopping. The control panel can be used for copying parameters for backup or for downloading them to another drive. A large graphical display and soft keys make it extremely easy to navigate.
The following assistants, which can be activated by the user, are included in the Assistant Control Panel:
The Start Up assistant simplifies commissioning by guiding the set-up of all essential parameters during the drive set-up procedure.
In the Maintenance assistant, the user can set criteria to enable preventive maintenance of the drive. The drive’s internal trigger points are utilized to create an alarm based on the drive cooling fan counter, the drive’s accumulated power consumption (MWh), running hours, or motor rotations (Mega revolutions).
The Timer, Serial Communication and PID assistants save time by making the set-up of these functions simple and easy.

The ACS 550 series is designed to fit all needed options and combinations inside the drive. This makes the installation fast and easy.
Most of our competition must add external options for:
Choke
RFI filter
Braking chopper
Option modules
EMC
EMC environment explanation
Thanks to the the drive meets the 1st environment category C2 level requirements as standard
More information: Inbuilt EMC filter
Conducted Emission requirements for all 2nd environment and 1st environment, restricted distribution limits using an internal filter, as standard
Radiated Emission requirements for 2nd environment and 1st environment, restricted distribution limits using an internal filter, as standard
User and Consultant Education
Emphasize specification of EMC compliance
Creates competitive advantage
Cable lengths for 1st environment 75 – 300 m
Cable lengths for 2nd environment 100 – 300 m
Detailed table on cable lengths available
Customers are very concerned about harmonics
Most operating hours are spent at partial load especially on pumps & fans
This harmonic current reduction is not possible with the same size standard DC bus chokes or AC line reactors!
The ACS550 Harmonic signature is the best in the industry
More information: Swinging choke vs. conventional solution
- R1 through R4 use swinging DC choke and larger frames use a swinging AC Line reactor as does the ACS800
- The incremental inductance of the Swinging Choke varies according to the current flowing through the choke
The Swinging Choke design provides increased inductance at reduced current and even nominal current yielding low harmonic content
Drawing:
- The patent pending swinging choke provides unique harmonic reduction advantages compared to conventional choke.
- ACS550 includes the step gap version drawn with the pink line.

- The Swinging Choke design provides increased inductance at reduced current and even nominal current yielding low harmonic content.
- This harmonic current reduction is not possible with the same size standard DC bus chokes or AC line reactors!
- Benefit: Better harmonic signature at no additional charge
The patent pending swinging choke provides unique harmonic reduction advantages compared to previous ACS 400 designs
All chokes are swinging (saturable) by design
Scalar control varies voltage and frequency
Vector control varies torque indirectly (current – flux) resulting better torque response
12 kHz is available only in scalar control mode. Current derating for 8 kHz is 20% and for 12 kHz 35%.
User can define whether switching frequency or current will be decreased if the load limit is met. When load is decreasing the same unit will be increased again.
Noise smoothing function continuously varies the switching frequency around the set value reducing the audible noise
