Excerpts from the forewords:
Everything that is said, serves to affirm that in the XXI century
we face a blank in finding a solution to the crisis - which
requires to consider the issues of population, peace, science
and the relationship between employment and wealth
accumulation with the level of consumption.(...) The authors
of this book bring important insights to this debate.

Small particles of plastic in the seas attracted increased attention
in recent years. It is partly due to the plastic can remain for
hundreds of years before it breaks down, while the global use
of plastics is increasing.
Micro-plastic is found in aquatic organisms at all levels of the food
chain. In the North Sea and the Great Belt, micro-plastics were
found in seals, herring, cod and mussels. The plastic can in high
concentrations give rise to tumors, liver problems&inflammation,
but how big the problem is in the nature is uncertain.
Studies have been done on micro-plastics in the oceans, but the
knowledge is stillpoor on which sources generatemostemissions.
The first study sponsored by the Danish Government shows that
tires are the largest source of micro-plastics. Between 500 and
1700T/y.some 60% of total, come from the used tires. Other
sources are shoes 7%, marine coatings 5%, road 5%.
“It is too early to determine whether emissions of micro-plastic
particles pose a risk to the marine environment or not. Therefore
we need to further investigate what it is that turns up in water
treatment plants”, says Carsten Lassen, a specialist in COWI.
Most probably it can be recycled and save energy and crude.

A large infrastructure construction usually needs test drillings,
taking soil samples, to find out what lies beneath the surface.
But seldom seismic or electrical measurements are made.
Maria Ash, Professor of Geology in Luleå is heading a project
with researchers, enterprises and government. The aim is to
develop methods to provide a better basis for tunnelconstruction.
What is unique about the project isthat it uses multiplemethods;
together they give safer interpretation&better surveys. For ex,
fracture zones in the rock&contaminated soils can create costly
problems in the building if they emerge as surprises.
Electrical, electromagnetic and seismic measurements
have so far been made in several parts of the country. At the
seismic method, sensors measure how fast hammer waves
travel through the ground. The project evaluates new sensors
that detect ground motions.
The result is a rapid method where you see everything clearer
and with better resolution. By putting sensors on a 240m cable
on surface, they developed a new system. It avoids the time-
consuming task of burying sensors in the ground.
Their seismic measurement is not as susceptible to electrical
noise and used in cities with no interference. Measurements
from boats show how the rock looks in shallow waters. They
have for instance seen a fracture in Lake Mälaren, key for the
project of the tunnel to bypass Stockholm.
solos e rocha contaminada criam problemas onerosos a obra.
No método sísmico, sensores medem a
rapidez das ondas propagadas no solo. O projeto avalia novos
sensores que as detetam. O resultado éum método rápido, onde
se vê tudo com melhor resolução. Ao pôr sensores num cabo de
240m nasuperfície,evita-sea tarefalentadeenterrar sensores. A
medição sísmica não é tão suscetível à ruídos elétricos.Medi-

Portugal was a poor country with a hardworking people who
carefully took care of their resources. Families grew vegetables,
harvested fruits and nuts. They were happy, had plenty of
gold, but there was no freedom of speech.
Portugal has one of the
best environments for
fishing in a huge maritime
economiczone,withgreat
variety of species.
We also have unique
conditions in the EU for
aquaculture, both at
seaside and offshore.
Earlier, the fish industrypreserved with salt or the like, instead
of freezing. The fish caught in the South &Centre coast of
Portugal is great for filleting and freezing or smoking, for
durability. These are the processes most desired today in
Northern Europe, to avoid preservatives and other chems.
The most requested is the artisanal industry, which requires
EU authorization to avoid the strict rules dictated by the
cartel. It is up to the fishing cooperatives and the Ministry
of Agriculture to request quick approval in Brussels.
Smoking fish requires little investment; also the vacuum
packagingmachine isnot expensive, while freezingrequires
some. There are many of these newly disrupted in Northern
Europe which, with limited investment, may be updated.
With our 3,000 hours per year of sunshine, you must install
the cooling unit that uses solar panels and reduces the
cost of electricity to almost zero.
This trade, on top of bringing more income to the fisherman,
provides employment to his wife and children in the village
or town, so they do not need to move to the district capital.
There should be a cargo hub, to lower international shipping
costs. The coops should sell directly to industrial canteens
and catering in cities with air routes from Lisbon and Faro.
This could employ more 30,000 in fishing and handling, at
almost no investment. YES WE CAN - TOGETHER!

The seas are a vast natural resource that needs to be
valued economically, socially and environmentally. Many of
the challenges brought by population growth, including food,
energy, employment, health and leisure, have options in the
economy of the seas. PwC’s Sea Barometer tells more.
In Portugal, despite the macroeconomic constraints, there
are a number of maritime industries that, in recent years,
have experienced good levels of growth. The increase in the
volume of cargo passing our ports, together with the increase
in the number of cruises and the export of raw fish &fish
products, are the three main pillars for a growth in Portugal.
Although Gross Revenue of maintenance and repairs
have halved, the Gross Tonnage of ship movements
increased, as well as containers, since Dec/08.

PAPA FRANCISCO:A ECONOMIA - I
obrigam. E tem a ver com Portugal. Ele cita a ciência e nos
incita a mudar.
terra. Isto piora com ouso decombustíveis fósseis, basedo
sistema energético. A rude utilização do solo, e o desfloresta-
mento pioram o clima.
e sonora. Muitas cidades são estruturas que não funcio-
nam, desperdiçam, p.ex, água e energia.
Aumenta a violência e a agressividade, o narcotráfico e
A sabedoria, fruto
Querem assim, legitimar o
A terra
dum mundo limitado e finito.
