In this invited course for the Brazilian Family Therapy Congress in June 2016, Prof. Vincenzo Di Nicola will explore the predicament of the therapist facing families when families are facing trauma after the disaster. Using ideas from his model of Cultural Family Therapy (Di Nicola, 1997), his work on trauma with the Harvard Program in Refugee Trauma in Haiti (Mollica, 2008), and his philosophical investigations on trauma, Di Nicola will present a new model of trauma and therapy after trauma with a new concept of change based on Alain Badiou’s philosophy of the Event (2009).

Nesse curso, Professor Vincenzo Di Nicola vai expor a situação do terapeuta face à
família e a família face ao trauma depois do desastre. Utilizando idéias do seu
modelo de terapia familiar cultural (Di Nicola, 1998), do seu trabalho em trauma no
Harvard Program in Refugee Trauma (Mollica, 2008) no Haiti e das suas
investigações em Filosofia sobre trauma, Di Nicola apresenta um novo modelo de
trauma e de terapia depois de trauma com um novo conceito de mudança em
terapia baseado sobre a filosofia do Evento (ou Acontecimento) de Alain Badiou
(1994).
Conceitos e estratégias chaves desse modelo incluem: o encontro face a face
(Lévinas, 1997) e o diálogo relacional (Di Nicola, 2012) para ouvir a estória de
trauma (Mollica, 2008). Isto constrói o terapeuta como testemunha e a terapia como
relato de trauma. Só depois que a trauma seja resolvida é que famílias podem mudar
através da possibilidade do Evento. O Evento significa mudança que surge da
novidade – uma alteridade radical que abre espaço para novas possibilidades – que
chega através de verdade e cria sujeitos. Trauma (que impõe limites) e Evento (que

abre possibilidades) são então radicalmente separados – ou seja incomunicáveis e
irreconciliáveis. A terapia depois de trauma ajuda famílias para enfrentar o desastre
com coragem e preparar-se para a possibilidade do Evento. Esse novo modelo será
ilustrado com estórias clinicas de famílias em tratamento depois de desastres
naturais ou humanos.

In this course, Prof. Vincenzo Di Nicola will explore the predicament of the therapist
facing families when families are facing trauma after the disaster. Using ideas from

Harvard Program in Refugee Trauma in Haiti (Mollica, 2008), and his philosophical
investigations on trauma, Di Nicola will present a new model of trauma and therapy
after trauma with a new concept of change based on Alain Badiou’s philosophy of
the Event (2009).
Key concepts and strategies of this model include: the face-to-face encounter
(Levinas, 2000) and the relational dialogue (Di Nicola, 2011) in order to hear the
trauma story (Mollica, 2008). Only after trauma is resolved can families contemplate
change through the possibility of the Event. The Event means change that arises
from novelty – a radical alteration that opens space for new possibilities – that
arrives through truth and creates subjects (Badiou, 2009). Trauma (which imposes
limits) and Event (which opens possibilities) are radically separated, that is,
incommunicable and irreconcilable. Therapy after trauma helps families face the

disaster with courage and prepare for the possibility of the Event. This new model
will be illustrated with clinical vignettes of families in treatment after natural and
human disasters.
