invention of the Linux development model”.

Why is Linux important in the new global economic reality?

                                 ■ Linux continues to grow rapidly in share,
scale, and scope, even in the downturn
                                      • +10 years have passed since IBM's initial
                                        public commitment to Linux
                                      • Linux continues to gain features that enable it
                                        to address broadening market opportunities
                                      • Robust ecosystem enables lower cost,
                                        Linux-based alternatives to proprietary solutions

                                 ■ Unique attributes of Linux enable novel
                                     simplification strategies to reduce cost
                                      • Linux enables clients to choose the platform
                                        that makes the most sense
                                      • When consolidating IT operations during
M&A activity, Linux can enable asset reuse
                                      • Consolidating on Linux can reduce OS licensing
costs, generating savings up to 50%

Something Meaningful is Happening…

Every human being, company, organization, city, nation,
natural system and man-made system is becoming
       interconnected, instrumented and intelligent.
This is leading to new savings and efficiency—but perhaps
as important, new possibilities for progress.

Big Data : Desafios e Oportunidades

Characteristics of Big Data

“Variety – Big data extends beyond structured data, including unstructured data of all varieties: text, audio,
video, click streams, log files and more.
Velocity – Often time-sensitive, big data must be used as it is streaming in to the enterprise in order to
maximize its value to the business.
Volume – Big data comes in one size: large. Enterprises are awash with data, easily amassing terabytes
and even petabytes of information.” – IBM

A New Era of Information Management

“Clearly, the big data revolution is fostering a powerful new type of data science. Having more comprehensive
data sets at our disposal will enable more fine-grained long-tail analysis, microsegmentation, next best action,
customer experience optimization, and digital marketing applications” – Forrester

“The ideal enterprise data warehouse has been envisaged as a centralized repository for 25 years, but the
time has come for a new type of warehouse to handle "big data." This "logical data warehouse" demands
radical realignment of practices and a hybrid architecture of repositories and services” – Gartner

  • 10. Something Meaningful is Happening… Every human being, company, organization, city, nation, natural system and man-made system is becoming interconnected, instrumented and intelligent. This is leading to new savings and efficiency—but perhaps as important, new possibilities for progress. The world is flatter. Because it can. The world is Because it must. smaller. Because we want it to. The world is getting smarter. © 2012 IBM Corporation

Big Data is “not” a technology, it’s a problem set and clients are exploring multiple ways to address their unique business problems Volume Velocity Variety 12 terabytes of Tweets created daily 5 million trade events per second 100’s video feeds from surveillance cameras Analyze product sentiment Identify potential fraud Monitor events of interest 350 billion meter readings per annum 500 million call detail records per day 80% data growth are images, video, documents… Predict power consumption Prevent customer churn Improve customer satisfaction 13 © 2012 IBM Corporation
  • 14. Big Data : Desafios e Oportunidades Characteristics of Big Data “Variety – Big data extends beyond structured data, including unstructured data of all varieties: text, audio, video, click streams, log files and more. Velocity – Often time-sensitive, big data must be used as it is streaming in to the enterprise in order to maximize its value to the business. Volume – Big data comes in one size: large. Enterprises are awash with data, easily amassing terabytes and even petabytes of information.” – IBM A New Era of Information Management “Clearly, the big data revolution is fostering a powerful new type of data science. Having more comprehensive data sets at our disposal will enable more fine-grained long-tail analysis, microsegmentation, next best action, customer experience optimization, and digital marketing applications” – Forrester “The ideal enterprise data warehouse has been envisaged as a centralized repository for 25 years, but the time has come for a new type of warehouse to handle "big data." This "logical data warehouse" demands radical realignment of practices and a hybrid architecture of repositories and services” – Gartner 14 © 2012 IBM Corporation
