2. SÉCONCATEDRAL
TheChurchofSãoMiguel,SéCatedralsince1956,wasrebuiltintheXVIIcentury,inRenais-
sancestyle.Therearevisibletheelementsofthedifferentphasesofconstruction:arccruise
fromtheXVIcentury,altarpiecesandpanelsoftheXVIIcenturyandthepresbyteryandsac-
ristyoftheXVIII-XIXcenturies.
DuetothelackofmeanstomakeamonumentalworkitwasD.Martim AfonsodeMelo,
BishopofGuarda,whorebuiltitinthelastquarteroftheXVIIcenturybypayingmostofthe
expenses.
Ithasonlyoneshipthatisseparatedfromthepresbyterybyabeautifulrenaissancearc,the
closingofwhichisthecoatofarmsofBishopMartim AfonsodeMeloasevidencedbythe
wordsofatombstonethatisinsideoftheCathedralononesidewall.
ToTothesecondbishopofthedioceseofCasteloBranco,FreiVicenteFerrerdaRocha(1782-
1814),theconstructionsiteisdue(inBaroquestyle),ofthetwolateralbodies,withwhichthe
templehasbeenincreased:theGreatSacristy(“SacristiaGrande”)andtheChapelofthe
BlessedSacrament(“CapeladoSantissímoSacramento”).
Themainarchitecturalrestorationswhichareknownwereheldinthefollowingyears:
-In1608-Cruisearchchangewhoseoriginalstructuredatedfromthesixteenthcentury.
-In1682-workscarriedoutinthelowertwolevelsofthefacadethatperformedwithbaroque
nature.
-In1691-paintingsbyBentoCoelhowereintroducedinhiseightchapels
-In1771–weremadeimprovementworkswhenthecityofCasteloBrancopassestheDio-
ceseandthequotedchurchpassestocathedral.
-In1785–thepresbyteryisrebuilt
-In1791-thepaintingsofPedroAlexandrinowereplacedinthealtarpiece.–
-In1785–alsoplacedpaintingsofthesameauthorintheChapeloftheBlessedSacrament.

-IntheXIXandXXcenturieswerealsocarriedoutrestorationworkandmaintenance.
-In1978–thismonumentwasclassifiedasPublicInterest.

cruising,whichindicatedtheexistence,ina
locationinthevicinityofachapelwith
invocationofSt.John.

Someofyoudonotknowthatthemuseumwasn’talwayshere.
Themuseumwasfoundedin1910byFranciscoTavaresProençaJúnior,multiplepersonality
ofinterestofscienceandarts.Hebecamefamousasanarchaeologist.
TheThemuseumwasinitialyinstalledintheConventodosCapuchosofCasteloBrancoandafter
a troubled existenceitwastransferred in 1971 to thebuilding oftheformerPaco
Episcopal.(bishop’spalace).
InInthenineties(décadade90)itbenefitedoflargeworksofupgradingandmuseographic
adoption.Theoriginalcoreofthemuseum isbasedonthearchaeologicalcollectionof
FranciscoTavaresProençaJunior,laterenrichedbyancientpiecesofartfrom thefillingof
thebishop’sPalaceandsuccessivemergersofarchaeologicalspoils,vestmentsand
embroidedquilts,thelaterfromthecollectionofVilhena.
TheThemuseum hasaworkshop-schoolofregionalembroideryintegratedintothevisitroute
whereyoucanseethemanufacturesofquiltsandembroideredsilkpanelsoflinen
homemade,fromtraditionaldesignstoorder.

4. THETRADITIONALEMBROIDERYOFCASTELOBRANCO
Whyhere?Whyinthistown?Maybeduetothefactthatthecultureoflinenwassomething
traditionalaswellasthemulberrytreesgotalongsowellastoallowthelarge-scalecreation
ofBombyxmori(“bichosdaseda”).So,naturalconditionswereexploitedbythecommunities,
foryears.
SomeSomebelievethatthe18thcenturywasthemostfruitfulperiodinthemanufactureofthisfan-
tasticembroidery,howevertheybecameknownduringthemid-sixteenthcentury.By1940
somewomenstartedtoworkusingthematerialsthatwerestoredbyagentlemanthatfound
thisembroideryanartandwhodecidedtocreateacompanytosellit.In1950ittookplace
thefirstexhibition.Unfortunately,theonewhodefendedthevalueoftraditionandrecovered,
contributingtothereductionoffemaleunemployment,withouthavingeverbeensupported
bythestate,diesandthecompanyclosedin1969.
NowadaysthisworkispreservedbytheSchoolofRegionalEmbroidery,incorporatedintothe
MuseumTavaresProençaJunior.
TheTraditionalEmbroideryofCasteloBranco,formerlyknownas"embroideryloose",havea
uniquedesign,identifiablebyeithertheuseddrawingseitherbythewayofdrawingthem.The
influencescamefrom lotsofplaces:Persia,India,ChinaandlatelytheinfluenceofRenais-
sanceart,theBaroqueandpopularinventiveness.
Theembroideredmotifshaveaveryuniquesymbol.Thetwo-headedbirdrepresentstwo
soulsinonesinglebody;theflowervasestheFamily;thetreesKife;twobirdstheMarried
Couple;theroyalcrownthesignofauthority.Thus,thecarnations(“cravos”)allegorize
humans;therosesWomen;liliesVirginity;heartsLove;thetendrils(“gavinhas–pássaro”)
Friendship;ivyfirmAffection;jasmineVirtue;theroostertheVirility;pomegranatesandpine-
conesunityandtheindissolublesolidarityofthefamily;pulletstheblessedoffspringandliz-
ards,thealwaysdesiredcharmofhappiness.
Theembroideriesaremadeinlinenfabricwithembroideryloosesilkthread,thatis,thatwas
nottwisted,withthehelpofacircularrack.
Thepointthatisthemostappliedinfullembroideryisthe“loose”or"widestpoint",alsocalled
“PontodeCasteloBranco”,whichisnothingmorethanavariantof"Eastpoint"or"Hungary"
or"Bologna".
ThemotifsfortheCasteloBrancoembroideryisalloverthecityurbanism:pavementsand
evenbuildings.

5. GARDENOFTHEEPISCOPAL
PALACE
BuiltBuiltontheordersofBishopJoãode
Mendonçaatthebeginningofthe18th
century,theGardenoftheEpiscopal
Palaceisoneofthemostoriginalexam-
plesoftheBaroqueinPortugal,andthe
distinguishinglandmarkofthecityof
CasteloBranco.
LaidoutintheItalianstyle,thegardenhasvariouslevelsconnectedbystepswithavenues
andthematicwalksmarkedoutbyflowerbedsringedwithornamentalboxhedging.Oneof
itsmoststrikingfeaturesisundoubtedlythelargenumberofgranitestatues,especiallythose
thatlinethestepsandthatrepresentthekingsofPortugalarrangedinchronologicalorder.
PerhapsthemostcuriousaspectisthatthestatuesofthekingswhogovernedPortugal
underSpanishrule,from1580to1640,aresmallerthanthoseoftheotherkings.
ThereThereisnoshortageoflakesbesidetheavenues,withwaterfeaturesandfountainsinter-
spersedwithmanyotherstatuesalludingtosuchdiversethemesasthesignsoftheZodiac,
theseasonsoftheyear,thefourcontinents,thefourmoralvirtuesandthethreetheological
virtues.
TheconstructionoftheEpiscopalPalaceinthegardenbeganinthelate16thcenturyandwas
builtasthewinterresidenceoftheBishopsofGuarda.Today,ithousestheFranciscoTavares
ProençaJúniorMuseum.
