What is novel????????
The novel is a modern form of literature. It is born from
print, a mechanical invention.
A novel is a long narrative, normally in prose, which
describes fictional characters and events, usually in the
form of a sequential story.
Novel comes to India……
• The novel in Hindi:
In the north, Bharatendu Harishchandhra, the pioneer of
modern Hindi literature, encouraged many members of his
circle of poets and writers to recreate and translate novels
from other languages. Many novels were actually translated
and adapted from English and Bengali under his
influence, but the first proper modern novel was written by
Srinivas Das of Delhi.
AUTHOR TITLE
 SRINIVAS DAS - PARIKSHA-GURU
 DEVAKI NANDAN KATRI - CHANDHRAKANTA
 PREMCHAND - SEVASADAN
PARIKSHA GURU
Pariksha guru(The Master Examiner) is the first proper
novel in Hindi. It was written by Srinivas Das of Delhi and
published in 1882. The novel is considered a landmark in
Hindi fiction. It was reprinted in 1974 with an introduction by
Ramdaras Mishra. This novel did not achieve great
success because Bengali novels of those times were love
sagas wrapped in fantasies.
CHANDRAKANTA
Chandrakanta is a popular Hindi novel by Devaki Nandan
Khatri. It is considered to be the first work of prose in the
modern Hindi language,Chandrakanta- a romance with
dazzling elements of fantasy-it is believed to have
contributed immensely in popularising the Hindi language
and the Nagari script among the educated classes of those
times. Although it was apparently written purely for the
‘pleasure of reading’, this novel also gives some interesting
insights into fears and desires of its reading public.
SEWASADAN (The Abode od
Service):
It was originally written in Urdu under the title Bazaar-e-Husn ("Market
of Beauty“) but was first published in Hindi from Calcutta as Seva
Sadan ("The Abode/House of Service"), in 1916. It was the writing of
Premchand that the Hindi novel achieved excellence. He began writing
in Urdu and then shifted to Hindi, remaining an immensely influential
writer in both languages. He drew on the traditional art of kissa-goi
(storytelling). Many think that he had lifted the Hindi novel from realm of
fantasy, moralising and simple entertainment to a serious reflection on
the lives of ordinary people and social issues.
• NOVELS IN BENGALI:
In the ninteenth century, the early Bengali novels lived in to worlds. Many
of these novels were located in the past, their characters, events and love
stories based on historical events.Another group of novels depicted the
inner world of domestic life in contemporary settings.Domestic novels
frquently dealt with the social problems and romantic relationships
between men and women.
The old merchant elite of Calcutta patronised public forms of
entertainment such as kabirlarai (poetry contests), musical soirees and
dance performances. The new bhadralok found himself at home in the
more private world of reading novels.Sometimes the household of the
great Bangla novelist Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay would host a jatra
in the courtyard where his family members where gathered. In Bankim’s
room, however a group of literary friends would read, discuss and judge
literary works.
Besides the ingenious twists and turns of the plot and the suspense, the
novel was also relished for its language. The prose style became new
object of enjoyment. The Bengali novel used a colloquial style associated
with urban life. It also used meyeli, the language associated with women’s
speech. This style was replaced by Bankim’s prose.
The novel rapidly acquired popularity in Bengal.By the twentieth century,
the power of telling stories in simple language made Sarat Chandra
Chattopadhyay(1876-1938) the most popular novelist in Bengal and
probably in the rest of India

DURGESHNANDINI
• Durgeshnandini is the first Bengali novel written by
Bankim Chandra as well as the first major Bengali novel
in the history of Bengali literature. The story of the novel
was borrowed from some local legends of Arambag
region, Hooghly district, Paschimbanga, collected by
Bankim Chandra’s great-uncle. Although the
conservative critics mocked the lucidity of Bankim
Chandra’s language, Durgeshnandini was highly praised
by most of the contemporary scholars and newspapers.
NOVEL IN ASSAM:
The first novel in assam were written by missionaries. In
1888 assamese students in kolkata formed the assamya
bhasar unnatisadhan that bought out a general called
Jonaki.Ranjanikanta Bardoloi wrote the first major historical
novel in assam called Monomati(1900).
NOVEL IN ORIYA:
• In the mid of eighteenth century,Oriya
novel had also taken a proper
shape.Ramashankar Ray,a dramatist
began serialising the first oriya novel
Saudamani but could not complete.
• Fakir Mohan Senapati(1843-1918)wrote
Chaa Mana Atha Guntha. It announces a
new kind of novel that dealt with the
question of land and its possesion.
CHAA MANA ATHA GUNTA:
Chha Maana Atha Guntha, written by Fakir Mohan
Senapati, Father of Modern Oriya Literature is a 19th
Century’s Oriya novel. It is the first Indian novel to deal
with the exploitations of landless peasants by the feudal
Lord during British Rule. It was written much before the
October Revolution of Russia. (14 January 1843 – 14
