When writing a business report, the paper should be divided into five areas. These are
the terms of reference, procedure, findings, conclusions and recommendations. The
following business report example can be modified to fit the needs of any business.

Terms of ReferenceThe terms of reference in a business report will spell out who
requested the report, what position they hold within the company, why the report is
being requested, and what date the report was provided to the person who originally
requested it. This section should be concise and to the point; there is no reason to
include any information beyond the facts here. For example: “Jane Doe, Human

These are the terms of reference, procedure, findings, conclusions and recommendations. The following business report example can be modified to fit the needs of any business. Terms of ReferenceThe terms of reference in a business report will spell out who requested the report, what position they hold within the company, why the report is being requested, and what date the report was provided to the person who originally requested it. This section should be concise and to the point; there is no reason to include any information beyond the facts here. For example: “Jane Doe, Human Resources Manager, requested this report on employee satisfaction with cleanliness in the workplace. The report was to be submitted no later than January 1, 2012.” © 2012 Citrix | Confidential – Do Not Distribute

Notas do Editor

  1. Intro: This generation couldn’t possibly conceive of why their workplace computing experience wasn’t just as simple, elegant and easy as their home experience. Key Points: This was a generation bringing iPhones and iPads into the workplace because they loved them. To make matters worse, the executives were on the same bandwagon…actually, they are often driving this change as well. That’s why we believe, as does Gartner, that consumerization will be the single most impactful trend to impact IT over the next decade. Anecdotes/Proof Points: Bring in a personal anecdote here – make a comparison between what you were offered from a computing perspective when you joined the workforce versus what people expect now. It is one device and there was one device type. Now its multiple devices and people want a choice of which device that is.Transition: So what have businesses done to embrace consumerization and think of a new way to provide IT services.
  2. Intro: Well there has actually been a fair amount of innovation in this arena. Key Points: Many companies have attempted to embrace BYOD, Workshifting, Micro-Apps, Mobility, and Enterprise App Stores. Companies want to do something about consumerization because they know its inevitable. As an example, Citrix itself now embraces all of these. We have a robust BYOD program in place, empowering employees to use the device of their choice. We employ people globally, many of whom work in far-flung remote locations, some in their homes, and others in carefully designed, collaborative workspaces – in short, wherever work can be done swiftly and cost effectively. Transition: But it hasn’t been easy….
  3. Intro: Here’s why…Key Points: Today’s systems – designed & built in the PCEra – are based on some coreassumptions: that people work in an office, using a corporate-issued PC and primarily attached to a wired network. The services that IT delivers are largely designed as premise-based, built in a monolithic way and offered in suites of apps … for various roles, locations and even devices. Over time, these assumptions have forced IT to over-invest in exceptions. If you’re mobile, you’re an exception. If you want to use a personal device, you’re an exception. Wireless, cloudservices, micro-apps through an appstore? All exceptions. At Citrix, we believe the exceptions of the PC Era are the new assumptions of the Cloud Era. Where everyone is assumed to be mobile and enabled with multiple personal devices… connecting over wireless networks. Apps are delivered as cloud services – private or public – as micro-apps because simpler is better, faster and cheaper. And all IT services are self-service, delivered through enterprise app stores. If you build to this newsetofassumptions… anyone who works in an office on a companydevice, connects to a wired network to use premise-based, legacy apps, doesn’t cost one incremental dollar to the enterprise. So in the cloud era that Citrix envisions, the exceptions are free! Transition: To reiterate …
  4. Intro: At Citrix, we believe in a world where people can work or play from anywhere. Key Points: We added the word play a few year’s back because we knew that something profound was taking place. Employees were taking control of their own IT. People were beginning to bring their personal devices into the workplace – and you know what – these brave, young digital natives expected them all to work on day one. At Citrix, we couldn’t agree more - Everyone should be able to work whenever and wherever they want on whatever device they choose. Anecdotes/Proof Points: At this point, weave in a personal story about your experience with digital natives – whether your kids, someone at work, etc and how the expectations have influenced business.Transition: Unfortunately, we live in a crazy world.
  5. Key Points: According to recent studies and reports, the average worker uses 3 different devices on a daily basis. (Suggestion: Add a personal anecdote, e.g. “In fact my 12-year-old daughter uses 3 devices on a daily basis – her laptop, a cell phone and an iTouch”.)
  6. People may work in the office some of the time but at least 50% work across multiple locations – they might be at home working after the kids go to bed or in an airport or at a customer site.
  7. Different types of apps are growing at rapid rates – according to a recent Citrix survey taken at Synergy SF 2012, Citrix customers are managing a large portfolio of apps
  8. Finally, almost every organization has problems today with employees leveraging free, insecure, unmanaged cloud-based storage.Supporting Data and/or Stories: We invited one customer under strict regulatory requirements to simply contact box.net and dropbox and ask how many accounts had their corporate suffix on the end (e.g. <email name@company.com> and the blood drained from their faces when they realized how many employees were sharing data using unsecure, unmanaged, unsupported cloud services.Transition: Let’s take a look at how mobility is being looked at from management…
  9. The result of BYO, consumerization of IT, and the proliferation of apps and data is that, according to Gartner, Enterprise Mobility ranks #2 this year in terms of CIO priorities.
  10. With worker demand for all these new tablets, smartphones and devices, IT can no longer just lock down devices completely and only give access to email. Citrix can provide you with the solutions that can help extend your apps and data access to your mobile workforce.
  11. Intro: We have a long history in mobility as a pioneer and leader in remote access. As importantly, we have delivered on device independence – providing access to IT services from any device. This is more critical than ever because consumerization is multiplying the number of devices people use – PCs, smartphones and tablets. Key Points:Mobile WorkstylesMobile workstyles allow people to work anywhere with anyone – collaborating with a high-definition experience that’s "just like being there“.  And, being mobile means data should securely follow the user – enabling simple and secure access from any device. And, of course, there are apps – providing every user with self-service access to any Windows, Web, SaaS, or Mobile app from a universal access point that’s device independent.Cloud ServicesOn the cloud services side, our vision is that Public clouds become more secure & transparent.Private clouds become more flexible & economical. Our goal is to deliver on this promise without being locked into any particular virtual infrastructure or cloud service provider. Powering cloud services starts with a single point of control that unifies the provisioning and security of Windows, web, SaaS and mobile apps through an enterprise storefront. At the back of the private cloud, a bridge to public clouds transparently enables infinite datacenter capacity. Underneath, we enable the build-out of Amazon-style clouds – from basic compute and storage, to end-user apps. And, to deliver cloud services to mobile users is an app-aware network that’s high performance, secure, and always available. This is a foundational piece for providing secure access to on-demand IT services over private or public networks to any device.Transition: This isn’t just talk, we’ve actually built tailor-made solutions, to help make this work for any organization.
  12. Intro: Solutions for everything from BYOD to cloud convergence..Talk through the key plays that focus on mobility / mobile workstylesTransition: Let’s take a deeper look.

  24. Let’s look at a comparison of what Citrix can do versus what other virtual desktop and SSL VPN vendors do with mobile device access. What happens when your endpoint analysis determines that a mobile device (likely ‘untrusted’ unless it can be thoroughly evaluated) is trying to access your datacenter resources? On the mobile security side, when you integrate Citrix Receiver and Access Gateway’s ICA Proxy capabilities you get the strongest datacenter protection available. This slide illustrates what I’m talking about.Other virtual desktop and VPN solutions:Key Features:Full network tunnel to the data centerAccess to all but simple Web Apps requires a full VPN tunnelAccess to Windows or client server apps requires RDP or ICA over VPNMobile device storage typically available for saving data Issues:VPN tunnel can be hijacked by malwareRequires extensive Mobile Device Management software to control the deviceData leakage becomes and issueCitrix XenDesktop, Receiver and Access Gateway solution:Key Features:Proxy connection – never a direct connection to the data centerSSL-based strong encryptionMobile device memory is sandboxed from other appsLocal device storage is disabledBenefitsWindows and complex Web apps enabled day 1ICA tunnel cannot be hijacked by malwareData leak prevention is inherent in the architecture

  27. Here is the CloudGateway infrastructure we’ve developed. It’s interesting to note that CloudGateway fully leverages the investments our customers have already made in XenDesktop and XenApp, which in CloudGateway language represent the ‘Windows’ content controller. Our customers leverage Receiver on any device to access XD/XA via an Enterprise App Store for XD/XA published resources, which today is likely Web Interface. StoreFront Services is the next generation ‘enterprise app store’ – capable of delivering XD/XA published desktops and apps alongside all other types of apps. Most of our customers are also using NetScaler Access Gateway as the ‘gateway’ service to allow secure remote access to the XD/XA app store.CloudGateway now adds many other content controllers to the existing infrastructure such as web, SaaS, native mobile, HTML5 and ShareFile data controllers. It’s hard to guess what other types of apps/content will be developed in the future, but we’ve build CloudGateway as a fully extensible platform that can be easily enhanced/expanded with additional content controllers as needed. Finally, on the endpoint devices we have expanded Receiver’s capabilities to include a secure mobile container for all apps and data – allowing full control including remote lock and wipe on demand in case users lose their devices or leave the organization. These capabilities even apply to locally installed native mobile apps – while the user sees them on their springboard alongside all their personal mobile apps, the business apps delivered via CloudGateway remain hooked into and fully controlled by Receiver.Key Points: Gateway services represents the security layer – this is the enforcement point for the contextual security controls you can set based on device characteristics, location (inside corporate network or external), network trustworthiness (public wi-fi or private network) and more. Gateway remote access and security services reside upon the NetScaler platform, which can be deployed as either hardware or a virtual appliance. StoreFront is the layer that aggregates and presents the unified app store to the users via Receiver. From a deployment perspective StoreFront is a software download that gets installed on a Windows 2008 R2 server. Finally, the content controllers that feed into StoreFront and deliver provisioning and single sign-on features include XenDesktop, XenApp and AppController. XenDesktop and XenApp provide all virtualized desktops and apps to StoreFront, and then the AppController component provides web apps, SaaS apps, mobile apps and data hosted by ShareFile Enterprise. AppController is a virtual appliance available for deployment on either XenServer or Vmware.

  39. In order to address the growing enterprise mobility needs of our customers we designed and build CloudGateway to solve several core issues relevant to IT teams in all industries:*Mobilize and deliver all apps, beyond just MS Windows (which Citrix has been king of providing for 20 years) to web, HTML5 and native mobile apps*Enable BYO by provisioning IT services without being concerned over managing the devices – IT can effectively be device agnostic, enabling users to be as productive on the go as they are in the office while maintaining security and control over their corporate content, which brings us to the final problem solved:*CloudGateway fully segregates the business content our customers care about from users’ personal content – thus enabling customers to manage and control just the business content and not worry about anything else on the user’s chosen device.
  40. Self-serve app store. The CloudGateway enterprise app store gives users instant productivity from any device. User can easily self-select their mobile, web and Windows® apps from the corporate approved list and access these apps as they roam between devices. This app store provides IT with a single place to provision, manage and update apps so they no longer have to worry about manual application installations and updates for users .Follow-me data with ShareFile. CloudGateway with ShareFile Enterprise delivers the ultimate productivity for mobile users by providing access to the corporate data they need to get their job done. With this integration, users now have the ability to sync and share files securely from any device and can use their native mobile and virtualized apps to edit documents while they are on the go.Mobile security and control with MDX. CloudGateway powered by MDX enables the management, security and control over web and native mobile applications, including iOS Android , and HTML5. With MDX, corporate apps reside in a secure container, completely separated from personal apps on the user’s mobile device IT has comprehensive policy-based controls over the usage of corporate apps within the secure container, including the ability to remote lock and wipe. MDX also provides a secure mobile browser and application-specific VPN access to ensure that users have simple, one click access to their internal web, external SaaS and HTML5 mobile web applications.Scenario-based access. With CloudGateway, IT defines comprehensive access and control policies that use endpoint analysis and each user’s defined ‘role’ to determine which apps and data to deliver and what level of access to content should be provided. By ensuring that the appropriate level of access to apps and data is granted for each scenario, these granular security controls support enforcement of corporate security policies and standards.Identity-based provisioning. CloudGateway leverages Microsoft® Active Directory® and other directory systems to provision, deliver and control how mobile, web and Windows® apps are used based on user identity and role. IT can instantly provision all of a user’s applications, including ShareFile, as soon as the person is added to Active Directory. Conversely, when users leave the organization access is instantly eliminated and accounts are locked once their Active Directory account is disabled.  And with the next release of CloudGateway scheduled for Q4, 2012 we are bringing forward a full suite of native mobile productivity apps:Citrix MobileMail. A native mobile app for iOS and Android devices that includes email, calendar, contact management, integration with CloudGateway’s secure browser for one-click access to an employee’s corporate Intranet, built-in ShareFile integration for easy file sharing on mobile devices, and GoToMeeting integration for scheduling calls on-the-go.Citrix MobileWeb.  A secure mobile browser for iOS and Android devices that enables secure access to internal corporate web, external SaaS, and HTML5 web applications. MobileWeb leverages MDX technologies, such as the MDX Micro VPN to create a dedicated VPN tunnel for accessing a company’s internal network and the new MDX security features to ensure that users can access all of their websites, including those with sensitive information.Citrix ShareFile Enterprise. Integration with Citrix ShareFile to enable seamless editing, sharing, and syncing of data from any device. In addition, when using MobileMail and ShareFile Enterprise together, users can attach files to emails simply and easily.
  41. Now let’s discuss the groundbreaking MDX features that we recently launched with CloudGateway 2 in July. MDX stands for ‘mobile device experience’ and is very focused on IT security and control while at the same time maintaining the excellent user experience everyone expects and deserves. There are 3 key MDX technologies that work together to provide that control:MDX Vault is a secure container for native mobile apps. When IT delivers native mobile apps you need to walk a fine line between providing the mobile experience users expect while maintaining total control over those apps. That’s the purpose of MDX App Vault – it creates a bubble around those apps so you maintain total control. You can centrally manage what devices and users can access apps and data, lock them, wipe them and more.MDX Access is secure remote access technology for mobile and web apps. It’s the industry’s first app-centric Micro-VPN, and is far more secure than the traditional device-based VPN technology which opens a full tunnel between your datacenter and potentially untrusted mobile devices. With MDX Access, the secure tunnel is dedicated solely to providing the specified app with remote access to back-end datacenter resources required by that app. Nothing beyond required app resources may be accessed. Additionally, MDX Access provides granular policy-based management over all native and HTML5 mobile apps.  IT can centrally control and configure policies specific to mobile apps such as the type of device or network is being used, the device passcode, or upon detection of a jail-broken device.MDX Interappensures that all MDX-enabled apps can interact with each other for a seamless experience. With MDX Interapp, MDX-enabled apps are integrated so that these apps only open other MDX-enabled apps, for example a link clicked in @WorkMail automatically opens @WorkWeb, not Safari. In addition, MDX Interapp controls the communications between apps so that IT can enforce policies around activities such as cut-and-paste between apps, for example allowing cut-and-paste between MDX-enabled apps but not to apps not protected by MDX, or by preventing use of a camera when using a specific MDX-enabled app.

  45. Citrix’s Enterprise Mobility Management solution is the industry’s first unified enterprise app store that aggregates, controls and delivers all apps and data - Windows, web, SaaS and mobile - to any device, anywhere. It provides mobile end-users with an intuitive single point of access and self-service to all their business apps and data, with a consistent high-definition experience on any device across any network. IT gains a comprehensive single point of aggregation and control for all apps, data and users, allowing IT to protect enterprise apps and data with scenario-based controls, such as identity provisioning for authorized users, automatic account de-provisioning for terminated employees, and remote wipe for data and apps stored on lost devices
  46. There is a lot of demand in the market for ShareFile, both from end users and IT.The need for ShareFile arises because of a tug-of-war between end users and IT. The tug-of-war itself is happening because of the consumerization of IT, and workshifting. We often talk about consumerization being a “device” phenomenon, where users bring in their own devices and want to use them for work. The other aspect of consumerization is the “Bring your own apps” where online services and software are being introduced into the enterprise by end users. IT feels pressure from users briging tooksWork shifting is also driving the need for tools like ShareFile. More and more work is being done by virtual teams crossing organizational boundaries. Collaboration tools need to enable this reality. We position ShareFile for IT, to deliver IT managed services which give users the things they expect from the consumer tools like enabling enterprise control and security. We ask our customers if they have a “Dropbox problem” and essentially everyone says they do.
  47. Unlike consumer-style file sync and sharing tools, ShareFile provides management and control functionality that allows IT to deliver a secure service, and store enterprise data in the optimal locations to meet corporate data policies and unique compliance requirements. ShareFile is a powerful service that is simple for IT to implement and manage, requires no additional investment and can be fully integrated with existing security infrastructure and policies.
  48. ShareFile Enterprise offers best-in-class follow-me-data/data sharing service with features that enterprise IT and users expect. Users can access, sync all their data from any device and securely share it with people within and outside (3rd party, customers etc.) the organization for easy collaboration and enhanced productivity. Large file size support(files up to 100GB).ShareFile Enterprise helps IT embrace user mobility requirements by offering a solution that enables employees to work and collaborate from anywhere, on any device. ShareFile offers apps specifically designed for providing a brilliant and intuitive experience on mobile devices and provides a mobile-optimized web site as alternative way to access data. The offline access feature allows users to access and edit their data on the go without interrupting workflow productivity. With Citrix Receiver integration, users can now access their all their apps and data from any device. Single sign on access to apps and data provides users the ability to view, sync and now edit their data as they roam between devices.
  49. The innovative StorageZones feature gives IT the flexibility to choose between Citrix ShareFile-managed secure cloud storage options in multiple worldwide locations, or lets IT leverage on-premise storage within their private cloud or a hybrid of the two. StorageZones enable optimal performance, by giving IT the ability to store data in close proximity to the user. With the On-Premise option, Storage Zones also allows IT to place data in their own data center to meet unique data sovereignty and compliance requirements. With the option to store data in multiple locations, StorageZones allows IT to build the most cost-effective solution for their organization.
  50. Mobile apps specifically designed for providing a brilliant and intuitive experience
  51. The combination of ShareFile, CloudGateway and Receiver provides a seamless experience as users move from device to device.  These components together provide a “single pane of glass” along with single sign-on to all enterprise resources (apps and data). It also enforces two-factor authentication with NetScaler Access Gateway and provides a rich content editing experience on mobile devices through virtualized applications.
  52. Or boxes!(dropbox, box.net)Dropbox’s and other consumer app security problems are well-publicized. Dropbox suffered a major security issue in mid 2011 where anyone could login to anyone’s dropbox account with any password (yes, you read that right). And you shouldn't’t put your critical enterprise data in a box!

  59. Intro: For most of you, application delivery is something you have been doing for a while.IT professionals have been using XenApp to securely deliver applications for decades. While the latest mobile device might seem like a new endpoint, the underlying XenApp services, client, protocols, and best practices remain the same. That existing experience greatly reduces the risk and difficulty in delivering applications to mobile devices with XenApp. Key Points: Remind them of why they implemented app delivery – custom app that doesn’t work on Win 7, SAP You can do more: Application delivery enables people to access their applications from any device, anywhere - Virtualize any Windows or web apps - Accessible from any devicePoll question: What is your current application delivery solution?Microsoft AppV, Citrix XenApp, OtherHow many applications are you currently supporting? 61. Intro: The keys for user experience are high-definition and consistency.Key Points:The next big piece here is HDXHDX is built on the core foundation of the company, going back nearly two decades. We know that people are coming from outside your corporate network, over difficult networks in order to access what they need; our R&D investments have gone to multimedia, voice and video collaboration. If you plug in a USB device, it just works without any training or extra support. Whenever we talk about protocol, WAN optimization comes up: how do you manage bandwidth and manage latency, but also give proper priority within all the different channels and the virtual desktop experience? We know that across that same network there is all kinds of other traffic going on. And so to really be able to provide QoS you have to be thinking about how do I compete with and prioritize different types of desktop traffic along with all the other traffic on the network. We have split the ICA protocol (that’s what is underneath the covers of HDX) into 5 different streams that can sit on 5 different ports so your network folks can manage QoS. Examples include those elements that are real time such as voice and video or interactive elements on the display versus things like bulk USB data or background data that could be given a much lower priority and not impact their user experience. By putting all these technologies together you get as many users on a pipe as possible and give all users the same QoS day in and day out. Transition: Now, you might be asking yourself: How could I actually deploy DV across my organization, and how long would that take?
  62. Provides the option of delivering ICA over up to four TCP/IP streams. This will give customers full flexibility for Quality of Service (QoS) routing over the network and provide superior audio/visual quality without disrupting other HTTP traffic.
  63. Networking optimizations: Previously XenDesktop routed unified communications traffic for video and voice back through the datacenter, sometimes referred to as hairpinning. Now with new enhancements for both Cisco Unified Communications Applications with XenDesktop and the XenDesktop Optimization Pack for Microsoft Lync, XenDesktop virtual desktops transmit compressed video directly between user terminals. This peer-to-peer line of communication avoids sending uncompressed video over the network, making these solutions robust even in WAN environments and increasing the scalability of deployments in LAN environments. • Protocol optimizations: UDP/RTP is typically deemed the optimal method for delivering audio and video data streams. XenDesktop virtual desktops now route audio and video data streams directly between clients over UDP/RTP, enhancing the user experience and minimizing bandwidth consumption by reducing the number of data streams on the networks.• Server scalability: Given the popularity and simplicity of video conferencing within the aforementioned unified communication solutions, the number of simultaneous video conferences is expected to increase. The new peer-topeer line of communication relegates compression and decompression of audio and video data to the client, thereby significantly increasing server scalability in the datacenter.

  66. At Synergy Barcelona we announced the Mobility Pack for XenApp and XenDesktop, which introduces a number of mobility enhancements for XenApp and the Mobile Receivers. We have created a new Mobile Receiver Virtual Channel (MRVC) that enables an auto pop-up on screen keyboard when the user touches into a text entry field and auto scrolling to ensure the text entry field is visible to the user and not covered up by the on-screen keyboard. Apps must be compatible with Delight for this to work. Also, additional mobile UI features are introduced like auto zoom to make the picker controls and list boxes easier to use in Windows applications hosted on XenApp. Legacy Enterprise Apps just become more usable with Auto-Keyboard, local combo box elements etc.  No source code changes are required.  We added some virtual channel enhancements that can expose GPS location information and other device sensor data and send it back to a XA-hosted application. This enables the opportunity for Legacy Apps to be tweaked to leverage some functionality of XAMP... e.g., location without any significant re-factoring of Layout.  For this example though, enterprises need to modify the source code of the App.Up until now we have been talking about enhancing the user experience of existing Windows applications when hosted on XenApp and used on a mobile device via Receiver. But, what about writing new, mobile-friendly applications that front end enterprise systems that are specifically designed for touch-based tablets and smartphones. And also, provide access to the unique device capabilities like GPS location services, camera, messaging, device buttons, accelerometer, compass, etc. With the Mobile App SDK, enterprise developers can write new Apps targeted at mobile devices with the appropriate layouts, skinning, etc.

  68. A user logs onto his computer which is running PN Agent. Sometime later, the user launches a XenApp published application such as Excel. This initiates a connection to the server which then displays their selected application. However, the launch takes much more time than launching the same application on a local desktop. An entire shift of workers arrives at the office right at 9:00 AM. All two thousand people fire up their thin client terminal and launch their line of business application within a ten minute timeframe. The resultant storm of traffic is so intense that it can take 15-20 minutes until everybody is able to start working. Existing Behavior (XenApp 6 and Earlier)Launching an application on a XenApp server requires creation of a session. Due to profile loading and logon scripts, many of our customers see individual session creation times of one to two minutes. In the second use case, the rapid succession of logon requests overwhelms individual servers, infrastructure servers, and perhaps even the network. New BehaviorThe two use cases described above are solved using similar techniques. In both cases, a Pre-Launch application is started for the user. As a result, a session is created. When the user launches a published application, it starts in the existing session due to the session sharing feature. The first use case is addressed with Just-in-Time Pre-Launch. When the user’s ICA client begins (during logon for the Online Plugin), the Pre-Launch application is started. The second use case is improved with Scheduled Pre-Launch. In this situation, the user must leave their ICA client running. They can simply lock their desktop machine or they may even be using server based XenDesktop. At the designated time, the Pre-Launch application is started.
  69. Instant startups for Apps streamed to XenDesktop VDIFor published applications streamed by XenApp to pooled XenDesktop (VDI edition) desktops, application launch time is greatly reduced streaming profiles to a virtual hard disk (VHD). At first application launch, profiles in the VHD format on the AppHub are mounted to the pooled desktop instead of in the cache of the pooled desktop itself, so that subsequent launches occur twice as fast, even after log-off/log-on to the Desktop.
  70. The administrator will have two user policy settings to enable Session Lingering. The first setting (Linger Terminate Time) specifies the number of minutes the connection remains active after the last user process terminates. If a new application starts during this time, the thread returns to the active monitoring state. Otherwise, the session is terminated. The second setting (Linger Disconnect Time) indicates the number of minutes to wait before disconnecting the lingering session. Again, a new application launch returns the thread to the active monitoring state. This setting will be ignored if the session is started in non-seamless mode. These two settings are user policies, so they can be configured based on user group, location, and other filter values. If either setting is not configured, that step will be skipped. For legacy behavior, the administrator would simply not configure both policy settings. The reason for having two policy settings is to balance the unique strengths of Connected and Disconnected Linger, which are shown below: Connected LingerLaunches applications more quickly, resulting in a better user experience. Disconnected LingerDoesn’t consume a Citrix license while lingering. More secure in a shared machine environment (kiosk, etc). In addition to the new policy settings, the Delivery Services Console session view will be enhanced to indicate which sessions are lingeringReconnectExisting Behavior (XenApp 6 and Earlier)When the user reconnects from the same client or from a different client, an entire new session is created. The user authenticates with this new session. Once that is done, session arbitration will look for a matching disconnected session. If a disconnected session is found, the new session will be discarded. The user’s connection will then be attached to the existing session. This mechanism works reliably, but it adds significant overhead. New BehaviorWhen the user connects to the server, the user will be silently authenticated. Then, early session arbitration will find any disconnected session. If found, the user’s connection will be attached to the session without the need for a temporary new session. Reduces reconnect time by 50% (An average of 3 seconds vs. 6 seconds)This enhancement requires no configuration, so there are no UI changes for the administrator.

Using worker groups, you can:Streamline application publishing to multiple farm serversLoad balance access to published resourcesFilter policies so that settings are applied only to sessions hosted on a specific set of farm serversWhen using worker groups, consider the following:A farm server can belong to multiple worker groupsA worker group can include any number of XenApp servers or none at allOnly servers that belong to the same XenApp farm are included in a worker groupA worker group is simply a collection of XenApp servers in the same farm. Worker groups allow a set of similar servers to be grouped together and managed as one.―Worker‖ refers to the servers in a XenApp farm that host user sessions. Worker groups are closely related to the concept of application silos. Many XenApp farm designs group hosted applications into silos, where a silo consists of a single worker image cloned to multiple machines in order to meet the capacity needs of that set of applications. All workers in the silo share the same list of published applications and identical XenApp server settings. Worker groups streamline the creation of application silos by providing a way to synchronize the published applications and server settings across a set of XenApp servers.

  74. Scale up XenApp deployments in record timeIT can now create "controller" or "worker" roles in a XenApp server farm. Because workers need to sync much less data, fewer database transactions are required and the process of joining a large number of servers to a XenApp farm is faster and easier.Previously, all the servers in a XenApp farm typically perform the role of a “Controller”. In simple terms, a Controller is a XenApp server that performs complex runtime dynamic data management. Research proved that, it is unnecessary to have several of these so called “Controllers” in a XenApp farm and restrict this operation to a small subset of servers, while the other servers purely host Terminal Server sessions and call these servers “Workers”. The benefit of this split allows IMA to create fewer objects in the database as “Worker” and also synchronize less data to the local host cache which yields fewer transactions with the database and improving performance while servers join a farm.

  77. Here is the likely infrastructure picture for many of you today, point out for a typical XenApp infrastructure
  78. Intro: The traditional desktop model has served us well, but increasingly it presents problems related to complexity, inflexibility and security.Key Points:Today’s enterprise computing model is increasingly complex and difficult to manage Maintaining individual components and striving for tighter control and integration across various silos means very high on-going IT maintenance costs, diminished security, and reduced user productivity. The traditional way of delivering desktops carries expensive implicationsRequiring users to work from the office or offering limited remote access, resulted in reduced productivity and higher barriers to finding talentStandardizing endpoint devices to address security and manageability concerns, causing increased end-user frustration about lack of mobilityPhysically shipping PCs and infrastructure to offshore workers, branch offices and new M&As, forcing lengthy delays to key initiatives, resulting potential lost profits, loss of first-mover advantage, etc.Investing resources in continuously updating, patching and refreshing PCs, regularly disrupting users without any perceived benefitInflexible combination of operating systems, applications, user settings and data hard coded to a specific device.Illustration/Anecdotes/Proof:(Perhaps ask here for examples from the prospect’s organization—how they handle new offices, acquisitions, onboarding, remote access, explosion of devices and apps, etc…)Transition: The impact of the issues extends into HR, finance, operations and even strategic planning. But much of the responsibility for addressing these issues falls on IT management.
  79. So as I described earlier, FlexCast is about having an infrastructure Flexible and Powerful enough to meet any use case. There is no one size fits all technology when you think about all the different ways that users need to access their apps and data.
  80. What is the right type of user, different users need different computing resources based on their job activities and FlexCast technology is designed to provide just that. -Designers and Engineers typically leverage processing intensive applications such as AutoCAD or Photoshop, desktop virtualization with FlexCast technology has been designed to leverage and optimize the required processing resources whether to deliver these applications internally or to an offshore workforce allowing IT to meet the demands of a highly skilled workforce.-Regulated environments have strict policies regarding data security and protection, the policy engines available within FlexCast provide organizations with the level of granular control required to meet some of the most stringent government and financial regulations while still providing a user-friendly experience.-Mobile professionals aren’t always able to stay connected to the corporate network, but FlexCast technology provides a desktop virtualization solution even for offline use.-The workforce is more globalized today than ever before, on-boarding and delivering the necessary applications and resources over a WAN connection has been one of the key differentiators between Citrix and our competition. FlexCast technology allows you to deliver the right type of desktop over any network enabling you to meet the demands of a global workforce.-Technology is more important in our schools systems than ever before, labs and schools need a way to rapidly provision applications and desktops to users on-demand while providing a consistent user experience across instances. FlexCast technology can deliver these applications and desktops to our educational centers in a streamlined and optimized process.Overall, FlexCast technology is not a one-size fits all solution. Desktop virtualization with FlexCast provides the right type of desktop based on user needs.Demo FlexCast model and key on the differentiation over simple VDI
  81. Demo the different FlexCast models via VCDCSo let’s look at some of the desktop delivery models…First, many of you may be familiar with VDI… This is just one form of desktop virtualization where a desktop OS is hosted as a virtual machine in the data center…Some of you may also be familiar with Hosted Shared Desktops, this is a tried and true model in use at huge scale as it is extremely scalable and affordable as each instance of a server OS is shared by many users.Other forms include Physical desktops used for GPU accelerated 3D and Remote PC, Streamed desktops where the entire OS is streamed to PCs for local execution, and Local desktops, powered by XenClient useful for managing fleets of corporate laptops or in high security multiple network environments.
  82. … So You just saw some of the amazing things you can do with desktop virtualization, and you might be thinking, wow, that’s great, but how do I get there, this sounds really complicated, but at the end of the day, it is a simple concept… Separate the layers of the desktop experience…Today’s desktop has an Operating system with drivers that locks it to the hardware, then applications reliant on the OS with libraries, then user data and preferences that tie the user to the stack. So once deployed, even with the best managed desktop practices, you have to manage each desktop as a unique object. So desktop virtualization is based on the idea of separating and abstracting these elementsAnd by isolating them it allows you to store them centrally manage, deliver them through lots of different models and bring them together at run time. So the payoff here is huge. You get the central management and control, security and agility you always wanted, while uses get the flexiblity and choice in devices and workstyle that they want. its great for IT and its great for users.
  83. If you are considering any type of migration to Win 7 or Win 8, Citrix can be a great solution for you…Microsoft and Citrix are better together in delivering the best complete Desktop Virtualization solution in market:Microsoft…is the Market Leader for DesktopsBest in class Application VirtualizationOver 45m MDOP licenses sold and more than 100 cases studies of global companies using App-V and many together in partnership with Citrix technologiesCitrix XenApp and XenDesktop provide full support for App-V integrated the delivery of virtual applications to the Citrix Receiver or surfaced within Cloud Gateway for self service. This frees the organization to choose the best hypervisor for the given workload. With built-in extensions to public cloud services, customers can simply extend their app and desktop clouds into the infrastructures offered by public cloud service providers.Bare metal - Enterprise customers can even choose to provision workloads directly onto bare metal by leveraging Project Avalon technology. This is key for workloads that do not perform well in a virtualized environment.Mixed CloudsPublic, private or hybrid - Enterprises can choose to create a private desktop cloud through which they enable departments to consume desktops, apps or infrastructure as a service. Departments take care of user assignment and de-assignment for services while central IT manages the overall design and delivery of the services. Enterprises can also choose to leverage Citrix CloudBridge to create a hybrid cloud whereby some resources are executing in a public cloud while others are on premise.Do-it-yourself or finished desktops - Customers will have the choice of delivering a completely finished desktop to their constituents or a more do-it-yourself one. Finished desktops are defined from OS to apps, by the provider and are merely consumed by the department. Do-it-yourself consists of desktop infrastructure provided by central IT but the customer has full control over the desktop OS, image and app set. This empowers certain customers, who want to leverage public infrastructure for desktop clouds but still want full control over the desktop environment, to leverage a hybrid desktop cloud.Smooth transitions between clouds - Project Avalon enables customers to deliver IaaS offerings to their constituents. This allows Enterprises to bring proprietary and confidential lab environments, which may currently reside on public clouds, into the private cloud.Leveraging the Microsoft PlatformMicrosoft and Citrix share a strong partnership that constantly evolves as the market evolves. 89. So I know some of you have been told when approaching Desktop Virtualization that its too costly, but in reality it is actually less expensive today than the traditional physical desktop. Lets take a quick look.
  90. Over the years industry analysts have generated reports validating better ROI and TCO with virtual desktops thereby building a strong business case for them against traditional desktops. But TCO and ROI are mid to long term financial goals and the key variable in the financial equation is the immediate cost, how much is the customer going to pay the first year? and how does this acquisition cost compare against other options(namely traditional desktops and the “other” virtual desktop guy.
  91. Lets take a look at some trends. This graph paints a very clear picture i.e. Virtual Desktops costs are trending down while physical desktop costs are flat( reducing 2-3%), some of the reasons for the declining costs are Moore’s Law increasing Server Density – lowers $ per user. Some high performance servers can lower these costs by 25-30% and they will continue to decline(up to 50% by 2013)Moore’s Law reducing costs of thin clients – lowers $ per device/per user, this cost element is the one of the biggest cost components in virtual desktop deployment. Improvements in storage utilization – lowers $ per user. Citrix’s partners continue to make advances in this area to improve utilization(de duping and thin provisioning)Improvements in DV software – optimizes storage, server, and network usage and better solution bundles
  92. This graph is an adaptation of the existing XenDesktop FlexCast TCA graph, but rather than being based on calculations from Gartner’s Desktop Virtualization assessment, this analysis is based on retail costs and implementation recommendations for a XenDesktop deployment of 2,500 users with 75% of the users with a Hosted Shared desktop and 25% of the users with a personalized, pooled VDI desktops using the Desktop Transformation Accelerator. All the design and environment sizing were decisions were based on the recommendations that Citrix provides to our own user community via the Desktop Transformation Accelerator allowing any customer to follow the same process to derive the same conclusions. This graph truly endorses the cost benefits of FlexCast and allows any customer or analyst to reproduce this exact model using their own pricing and discounts.
  93. Let’s look at the incremental costs of the design decisions based on a specific FlexCast model with user personalization and availability requirements. This graph represents the incremental costs associated with making the migration from a cost-effective, server-based virtual desktop with local apps and no requirements in place for High Availability, very similar to what a physical PC currently offers, and gradually layers the on the costs associated with personalization and redundancy, which is of course heavily correlated to shared storage costs (by shared storage costs we are talking about the comparison of only leveraging the storage that is local to a physical server versus a more robust, centralized shared storage system that is utilized across the full infrastructure), to reach the most optimized and personalize virtual desktop available in the marketplace.Disclaimer: All shared storage is based on iSCSI, moving to HBA and Fibre Channel would like push the price point higher than the Physical PC, but that would all be based on a new SAN structure going in place which is likely not the case for a storage network for 2,500 users which is what this model is based on.

  101. Intro: There are relatively simple keys to getting started.Key Points:This might appear complicated but essentially it’s a simple concept -- separate the layers of the desktop experience…Today’s desktop has an Operating system with drivers that lock it to the hardware, then applications reliant on the OS with libraries, then user data and preferences that tie the user to the stack. So once deployed, even with the best managed desktop practices, you have to manage each desktop as a unique object.Desktop Virtualization is based on the idea of separating and abstracting these elements. That allows us to store them centrally managed, deliver them through lots of different models and bring them together at run time. The payoff here is huge. You get the central management and control, security and agility you always wanted, while uses get the flexibility and choice in devices and workstyle that they want. It’s great for IT and it’s great for users. In sum, what we are doing for our DV clients is having different layers and splitting them apart--so that clients can manage an operating system that is…separate from the applications that employees need to use, separate from their data, separate from their preferences that make up their desktop experience…and accomplish all of that in the data center. Once you have built out the separate stack models which are independent, then on demand we can assemble and deliver those down to the user wherever they are on whatever network the may be accessing it from and typically it’s not just one model at a time. So, lets take a look at what that looks like.
  102. [Lindsay]One of the key pieces of the model that is really going to enable your transformation is the Desktop Transformation Accelerator. For years, Citrix has been trying to help our customers through a variety of ways, including professional services, developing our partner community…but we knew we had to do something more. We knew we needed a way to enable our customers to pursue desktop transformation on their own, and this is really what this tool was designed around. The tool is available to everyone at no cost via citrix.com/dta. It includes Assessment Tools and templates, including questionnaires to help you with user segmentation and your project roadmapIt walks you through a step-by-step design, which includes all of the key considerations within your infrastructure It allows you to view peer benchmarks, so you can see what others in your industry are doingThe tool also provides best practices and recommendations straight from our Consulting teamLast but not least, you have access to installation runbooks for the Deploy phase Andy will go into a bit more detail shortly on some of the additional features of the tools Now, when you log onto the tool for the first time, you’ll create a project. This project will hold all of your information as you move between phases. Your information can be saved within the tool, so you can log in and out as needed, and you’re able to export various results and reports for your use during your Desktop Transformation initiative.

  110. Registration Server: When a virtual desktop starts, the virtual desktop agent must register with a XenDesktop controller. The controller is responsible for maintaining the status of the virtual desktop and directing new requests to newly available virtual desktops. There is also a periodic heartbeat message exchanged between the virtual desktop and the controller. This allows the controller to detect failed virtual desktops, and it also allows the virtual desktop to determine if the controller has failed. Once this occurs, the virtual desktop attempts to contact another controller and reregister. This process does not impact an already connected user.
