"A contemplação das paisagens é, fundamentalmente uma procura de paz
interior. Tornaram-se a minha "Terra Mãe", onde reflito sobre o trabalho, a
identidade, o território, as raízes, os valores e a complexidade da vida
contemporânea."2013
“The contemplation of these landscapes is mostly about attempting to be at peace.
It became my Motherland, where I can reflect in my work land and identity, territory

3. O título desta exposição é uma
reflexão sobre o lugar e o tempo
(1988), momento em que Marga
Diks tomou uma decisão
fundamental sobre a próxima
fase da sua vida.
Em 2011, a sua mãe faleceu e
esse facto fê-la rever o caminho
sinuoso que tinha percorrido até
aí. A intensa dor de nunca o ter
conseguido alterar evoluiu para
uma sensação de paz interior. O
resultado é perceptivel na série
de oito trabalhos "A Despedida",
quatro em preto, quatro em azul.
“A despedida 1, 2, 3, 4 (Black
Madonna)” e “A despedida 5, 6, 7,
8 (Blue Cherubim)”
“Os materiais e as formas
representam uma espécie de
destilação de emoções sobre o
que me influenciou, os lugares
onde fui e onde estou agora,
como uma força emotiva
visceral”
The title of this exhibition is a
reflection of the time and place in
where, in 1988, the artist made a
fundamental decision about the
next stage in her life.
In 2011 the mother of the artists
passed away, which as a
consequence led her to
reconsider the sinuous path she
had travelled.
The intense pain of never being
able to change the vicissitudes of
life and death followed its course,
eventually leading to the
evolution of a sense of peace. The
result is tangible in a series of
work of eight reliefs under the
name 'The Farewell'; four works
in black (Black Madonna) and
four works in blue (Blue
Cherubim).
“The materials and shapes
represent a kind of distillation of
emotions on what has influenced
me, the places I have been and
where I am now, as a visceral
emotive force "

4. Muitos trabalhos aparentam
e s p o n t a n e i d a d e e
simultaneamente lembram os
“recortes” de Matisse: pedaços
de resíduos de madeira com
cortes aleatórios, por vezes
malha de algodão, unidos com
extrema precisão procurando
formas e relevos. O trabalho é
p r e d o m i n a n t e m e n t e
monocromático, tratado com
pigmentos, ceras e tintas.
Numa análise cronológica, os
trabalhos parecem ter uma
interligação. O elemento comum
mostra-se evidente num
trabalho de 1986: resíduos de
madeira, cordas, redes de pesca,
apanhados numa praia da
Holanda, assemblados de modo
a formarem um objecto
triangular de 5x3m colocado nas
dunas de maneira a projetar
sombras na areia, ao mesmo
tempo que era visivel à distancia,
funcionando como uma espécie
de sinal de perigo.
Many works appear spontaneous
while simultaneously reminding
the viewer of Matisse's
'cuttings', blocks of random cuts
of waste wood, sometimes
combined with crocheted cotton,
all carefully put together to
create structures and reliefs. The
work, treated with pigment, wax
and paint, is predominantly
monochrome.
From a chronological point of
v i e w , t h e r e i s a c l e a r
interconnection between the
different works.
A common theme is evident in a
work that dates back to 1986,
when the artist knotted together
black rope found on the beach in
the Netherlands into various
shapes and forms. This piece was
left in the dunes stretched above
pieces of drift wood giving the
impression that it was floating
above the sand, as well as making
shadows which acted as a kind of
warning for danger that would
have been visible from the sea.

5. «Uso o que encontro ao meu
redor, formando esculturas que
abordam diversas questões: o
tempo, a memória, o corpo.
Tornaram-se objetos com as
emoções como força criativa.
Durante o processo de criação,
procuro por vezes dar um passo
atrás e desenvolver o trabalho
com objetividade, explorando o
espaço positivo e negativo e, ao
mesmo tempo, deixando-o ir,
saboreando o passeio.
No entanto estar alerta é
importante.”
Luciano Fabro escreve em "L' Art
Redevient L' Art", sobre o dilema
de trabalhar de uma forma
instintiva, livre de qualquer
preocupação, de que tudo é
estabelecido de acordo com um
mecanismo fixo e que este curso
de ação é apenas inicialmente
livre e depois se repete.
“I use what I find around me.
Forming work that address
issues of time, memory and the
body. They became objects with
emotion as a drive. During the
process of creation I try to step
back and craft my work with an
involved objectivity while
exploring the positive and
negative space and at the same
time losing control and enjoying
the ride.
However, staying alert is
important.”
Luciano Fabro wrote in his 1989
book, 'L'Art Redevient L'Art',
about the dilemma of working in
an instinctive way, free of
worries, where everything done is
established according to fixed
m e c h a n i s m s , w i t h t h e
consequence that this course of
action is only initially free and
afterwards endlessly repeats
itself.

do conhecimento. Mas, curiosamente,
apesar da abordagem positiva na história de
Plínio, o mito caiu lentamente no
esquecimento.
aceitar.”
Once the different works are seen together,
the contrast between pieces brings another
element. The shadows created create a
sense of space and volume, reminding us
that according to 'Pliny's Land' the shadow
is the origin of representation.
In 'A short history of the shadow' in 1997
Victor I. StoichitaI was struck by the strange
parallels between the Platonic story of the
origins of knowledge and Pliny's story about
the origin of painting. 'Maybe one of the
most important differences between them
is that, in Pliny's story about the origin of
representation, the shadow was not
charged with a negative aspect: the story of
the maid of Corinth tracing her lover's
shadow on a wall and thereby giving birth to
painting is a wonderful story, a love story,
and not at all negative, unlike Plato's story
about the origin of knowledge. But
interestingly, despite the positive approach
to the shadow in Pliny's story, the myth was
slowly forgotten. I think for the western
mentality, accepting that representation
originated in the absence of light, in a dark
spot, it was difficult to accept.’

«A contemplação destas paisagens é,
fundamentalmente uma procura de paz
interior. Tornaram-se a minha "Terra
Mãe", onde reflito sobre o trabalho, a
identidade, o território, as raízes, os
valores e a complexidade da vida
c o n t e m p o r â n e a . N a s a g u a r e l a s
surpreendo-me com a suavidade do toque
da tinta no papel húmido. Como ela se
espalha, por vezes em camadas, diluindo-
se e deixando-se absorver pelo papel. O
material utilizado reflete o meu prazer no
momento do trabalho, a física e o elemento
físico atraem-me."
In the eighties the artist was making large
pigment drawings which she called 'The
Characters'. After finishing her fine art
studies in Holland and after moving to
Portugal, she concentrated on painting oils
until 2006. Around 2005 the artist started to
express herself through watercolours and
ink drawings on paper. This material seems
to be the most suitable in giving shape to the
landscape of the natural and agricultural
areas where she has lived with her family
since 2002.
“The contemplation of these landscapes is
mostly about attempting to be at peace. It
became my Motherland, where I can reflect
in my work land and identity, territory and
values, roots and the complexity of
contemporary life.”
'In the watercolours I am surprised about
the softness of the touch of the ink and paint
on the mostly humid paper. How it spreads,
sometimes in layers on top and in touch with
each other in reaction with the water and
absorption of the paper.
The material used reflects my joy of the
event of the work, a physical and physic
element that appeals to me. "

Marga Diks convida o público a tomar parte
nesta exposição (na verdade em todas as
exposições), tornando-a um momento de
celebração em conjunto. "Não só o artista,
mas também o organizador, o público e
todos os participantes são responsáveis
pelo desenvolvimento de qualquer forma
de arte".
The installation, 'Life is a dog', at the
entrance of the exhibition, is composed of
pieces of mirrors, heavily tarmacked shoes,
a ragged piece of classical furniture, along
with other objects and their reflections.
This works reflects the role of the artist
herself as an artist in a society as an artist,
woman, worker and mother. The materials
are simple and mostly recycled, in a style
that can also be found in the art movement
'Arte Povora' that originated in Italy in the
sixties. The artists of this movement took a
critical position in relation to the
institutional values imposed by the
government, industry and art.
In all the work a strong graphical input can
be seen, perceptible even in the softness of
the watercolours.
The artist invites everyone to make this
exhibition, and in fact all exhibitions, a
success through the collective celebration
and enjoyment of art.
“Not only the artist, but also the spectator,
the organizer and everyone linked to the
spectacle is responsible for the
development of any cultural form”.21
