2. Soccer Positions
While often deemed the world's most
popular sport, soccer remains a mystery
to many Americans. Here follows a
description of various soccer positions.
3. Soccer Positions
Goalkeepers: Goalies defend their team’s goal and can usually be
found right in front of the net. They are the only players on the
field allowed to use their hands.
Fullbacks: These are defenders who play nearest the goalie.
Midfielders: The glue between defenders and offensive players,
midfielders play in the center third of the field.
Forwards: Offensive players who push deepest into opponent
territory. These players are a team’s principle scoring force.
Professional teams as well as many clubs use 11-person teams.
With the exception of the goalkeeper position, always assigned to
one individual, positions may be designated to one to four players
at a given time, depending on a team's strategy.
