FINDABILITY ASPECTS IN FAMILY FARMING
DIGITAL INFORMATION ENVIRONMENTS
Family Farming
Family Farming: comprised of several rural activities that
are managed and operated by a family and predominantly
dependent on family hand labor.
It’s a strategical area in the food chain for many countries:
• 570 mi family farming establishments, producing 80% of
the world’s food;
• 9 out of 10 farming establishments are managed by
families.
2
Family Farming
Brazil scenario:
• Brazilian commodities are one of major actors of the
global food chain.
• Agriculture area is a considerable part of the country’s
economical growth rate.
• 5 mi rural establishments.
• 84% of all rural establishments are managed by families,
producing:
• 58% of milk;
• 70% of bean;
• 83% of manioc.
3
Family Farming
Brazil scenario:
• 12.3 mi jobs are linked to Family Farming
• A huge part of them do not finish elementary/high school
4
Governments/NGO/Universities manifest interest to
increase the use of Information and Communication
Technologies (ICT) by Family Farmers, amplifying access
to information by farmers and bringing benefits to rural
practices and increasing their competitive factor.
• Remembering that big rural enterprises have more data
and information available than family farmers

CoDAF
In 2012, the university extension project Competências
Digitais para Agricultura Familiar (CoDAF) with objective
to provide alternatives that minimize factors that hinder
access to information through family farmers began.
For example: lack of skills or familiarity with ICT and
information systems that exist today.

7
Concerns
However, the use of ICT associated with the profile of the
family farming public, promotes concerns not only in
relation to the access of content available on CoDAF’s
website, but also raises questions of how information is
available; and the way its users find the information.
It’s not about:
• the application of new information retrieval technique
• adopting a new software
It’s about:
• improving the way to find information on digital
environments by Family Farmers
8
Information Findability
Information Findability by Peter Morville (2005)
• How people reach information through websites;
• Findability studies: analyses features that delineate the
characteristics of information users combined with
mobility, convergence and ubiquity of technologies,
considering human actions to pursuit knowledge in an
environment that has digital and analog characteristics

Findability
Information Findability
Vechiato and Vidotti (2014) also propose an evaluation
model of information findability in digital information
environments.
It’s based on:
• attributes: characteristics which promote the
possibilities to find information by users in an
informational environment, divided in 10 groups;
• recommendations: attention points to improve
information findability, based upon the results from
attributes.
11
Goals
• Identify the main points related to information findability
on websites with a public who, among its set of users,
includes family farmers.
• The universe of research was bordered to the structure
and content available through the CoDAF extension
project in December ‘14.
• An exploratory analysis of the website, identifying the
attributes established by the evaluation model proposed
by Vechiato and Vidotti (2014, p. 11-19), are trying to
identify recommendations towards a better information
findability.

Conclusions
An observation strategy, with 5 points calling attention to
websites who had family farming users:
1. Massive generalization of the information contained in the
navigation structures;
2. All-time visual hierarchy navigation structures with sublevels;
3. Reduction in the use of different structures to present
contents;
4. Increase user participation in content construction;
5. Use of a metadata.

Findability aspects in Family Farming digital information environments

  • 1. RODRIGUES¹, Fernando, M.S. fernando@elleth.org AFFONSO, Elaine, M.S. elainepff@gmail.com VIDOTTI, Silvana, Dr. vidotti@marilia.unesp.br VECHIATO, Fernando, Dr. vechiato2004@yahoo.com.br SANT’ANA, Ricardo, Dr. ricardosantana@marilia.unesp.br 1 FINDABILITY ASPECTS IN FAMILY FARMING DIGITAL INFORMATION ENVIRONMENTS
  • 2. Family Farming Family Farming: comprised of several rural activities that are managed and operated by a family and predominantly dependent on family hand labor. It’s a strategical area in the food chain for many countries: • 570 mi family farming establishments, producing 80% of the world’s food; • 9 out of 10 farming establishments are managed by families. 2
  • 3. Family Farming Brazil scenario: • Brazilian commodities are one of major actors of the global food chain. • Agriculture area is a considerable part of the country’s economical growth rate. • 5 mi rural establishments. • 84% of all rural establishments are managed by families, producing: • 58% of milk; • 70% of bean; • 83% of manioc. 3
  • 4. Family Farming Brazil scenario: • 12.3 mi jobs are linked to Family Farming • A huge part of them do not finish elementary/high school 4
  • 5. Governments/NGO/Universities manifest interest to increase the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) by Family Farmers, amplifying access to information by farmers and bringing benefits to rural practices and increasing their competitive factor. • Remembering that big rural enterprises have more data and information available than family farmers ICT on Family Farming 5 http://media.economist. com/images/images- magazine/2010/35/bb/201035bbp0 00.jpg
  • 6. CoDAF In 2012, the university extension project Competências Digitais para Agricultura Familiar (CoDAF) with objective to provide alternatives that minimize factors that hinder access to information through family farmers began. For example: lack of skills or familiarity with ICT and information systems that exist today. 6 http://codaf.tupa.unesp.br
  • 7. 7
  • 8. Concerns However, the use of ICT associated with the profile of the family farming public, promotes concerns not only in relation to the access of content available on CoDAF’s website, but also raises questions of how information is available; and the way its users find the information. It’s not about: • the application of new information retrieval technique • adopting a new software It’s about: • improving the way to find information on digital environments by Family Farmers 8
  • 9. Information Findability Information Findability by Peter Morville (2005) • How people reach information through websites; • Findability studies: analyses features that delineate the characteristics of information users combined with mobility, convergence and ubiquity of technologies, considering human actions to pursuit knowledge in an environment that has digital and analog characteristics 9
  • 10. 10 Navigation toolsSite’s search engine(s) Affordances, Wayfinding (Breadcrumbs), Information Discover, Accessibility tools, Usability Tools DBMS Data Storage Searching Information Retrieval Findability
  • 11. Information Findability Vechiato and Vidotti (2014) also propose an evaluation model of information findability in digital information environments. It’s based on: • attributes: characteristics which promote the possibilities to find information by users in an informational environment, divided in 10 groups; • recommendations: attention points to improve information findability, based upon the results from attributes. 11
  • 12. Goals • Identify the main points related to information findability on websites with a public who, among its set of users, includes family farmers. • The universe of research was bordered to the structure and content available through the CoDAF extension project in December ‘14. • An exploratory analysis of the website, identifying the attributes established by the evaluation model proposed by Vechiato and Vidotti (2014, p. 11-19), are trying to identify recommendations towards a better information findability. 12
  • 13. Results 13 # Attribute Result 1 Information Organization and Terminology Control 1.1 Navigational Taxonomy (has adequate categorization of concepts/terms) Yes 1.2 Significant and consistent terms Yes 1.3 Use of controlled vocabulary, thesauri and/or ontologies No 2 Features of Social Classification and Navigation 2.1 Folksonomy Partially 2.2 Tag Cloud No
  • 14. Results 14 # Attribute Result 3 Representation of Informational Resources through Metadata 3.1 Use of Metadata No 4 Infocommunication subject’s mediation 4.1 Subject participation in the production of information No 4.2 Subject participation in the organization of information No 5 Possibilities of the subject to find Information through different Environments and Devices 5.1 Availability of resources, products and/or services in informational environments consistently on multiple devices No
  • 15. Results 15 # Attribute Result 6 Investigation of the Behaviors, Competencies, Experiences and Intentions of the Subjects 6.1 Analysis of the interaction log and other technologies No 7 Recommendations and evaluations about Accessibility and Usabiliy 7.1 Usability of the environment Partially 7.2 Accessibility of the environment Partially 8 Use of Affordances to Guide the Subjects in space (wayfinding) during the Navigation 8.1 Use of breadcrumbs and metaphors Yes
  • 16. Results 16 # Attribute Result 9 Use of Affordances for Query and Search Results 9.1 The search mechanism uses resources that assist the subject in the development of the search strategy No 9.2 On the page with the search results there are aspects presented to help refine the search Yes 10 Provide Pragmatic Searches 10.1 The search results are different types of documents based on the initial search strategy of the subject, presenting them in related forms No
  • 17. Conclusions An observation strategy, with 5 points calling attention to websites who had family farming users: 1. Massive generalization of the information contained in the navigation structures; 2. All-time visual hierarchy navigation structures with sublevels; 3. Reduction in the use of different structures to present contents; 4. Increase user participation in content construction; 5. Use of a metadata. 17
