If we focus too much on content, we ignore what we know about how our associative brain comes to makes sense new information. Think about how many people respond before reading past the first sentence of an email, or how a magazine article doesn't get the same reaction when displayed in HTML. Or consider how knowing the author of a publication influences your judgement of that content. Picking up from the session Stephen P. Anderson gave last year on "The Stories We Construct" (a biological look at the narratives that influence behavior), this session focuses on how we come to perceive—and respond to— information. From phantom limbs to magicians fooling our senses, Stephen proposes a model that makes sense of how we truly experience information. Practical? You'll leave with a deep understanding of everything UX is about and an awareness of common practices that don't account for this knowledge.

Many virtual reality applications, such as training, urban design or gaming are based on a rich semantic description of the environment. This paper describes a new representation of semantic virtual worlds. Our model, called SVHsIEVs1should provide a consistent representation of the following aspects: the simulated environment, its structure, and the knowledge items using ontology, interactions and tasks that virtual humans can perform in the environment. Our first main contribution is to show the influence of semantic virtual objects on the environment. Our second main contribution is to use these semantic informations to manage he tasks of each virtual object. We propose to define each task by a set of attributes and relationships, which determines the links between attributes in tasks, and links between other tasks. The architecture has been successfully tested in 3D dynamic environments for navigation in virtual urban environments.

This article presents a new representation of semantic virtual environments. We propose to use the ontology as a tool for implementation. Our model, called SVHsIEVs1 provides a consistent representation of the following aspects: the simulated environment, its structure, and the knowledge items using ontology, interactions and tasks that virtual humans can perform in the environment. In SVHsIEVs, we find two type of ontology: the global ontology and the local ontology for Virtual Human. Our architecture has been successfully tested in 3D dynamic environments.

Speed has become a way of life. We are asymptotically piling data. Speed can be achieved with new design processes, techniques, and Technology. Innovations AR and VR are just some of the many forms of technologies that will play a key role in shaping the Architecture and Planning of tomorrow, making it future-ready and ushering in a new age of innovation. AR and VR in Architecture & Planning were introduced as assisting tools and has helped generate multiple design options, expanded possibilities of visualization, and provided us with more enhanced, detailed, and specific experience in real-time; enabling us to see the resultsof work on hand well before the commencement of the project. These tools are further developed for city development decisions, helping citizens interact with local authorities, access public services, and plan their commute. After reviewing multiple research papers, it had been observed that each one is moving forward with the changes brought by it, without entirely understanding its role. This paper provides a summary of theappliance of AR & VR in architecture and planning.

Vivemos uma época de uso e exploração acelerada do digital em todos os setores da atividade humana. A pandemia e as suas circunstâncias serviram para ancorar o que de mais profundo o digital pode oferecer: a rutura das noções tradicionais de tempo e espaço. O contexto atual é de transição, confrontando velhas práticas com as suas limitações e encontrando novos caminhos de aplicação. Isso leva a um ambiente aberto e fértil para inúmeras inovaçõescom capacidade de transformar práticas antigas. A sala de aula não é exceção e tanto podem agora novas práticas baseadas em plataformas digitais serem transportadas para esse espaço físico e coletivo onde se ensina e se aprende em conjunto, como se pode valorizar mais, as oportunidades de colaboração e atenção conjunta proporcionadas por estarmos a um mesmo tempo, num mesmo espaço. Nesse cenário, existem desafios e necessidades suficientes para manter o mundo centrado na atividade humana e nas pessoas, discutindo o papel da escola, da sala de aula e dos professores, num contexto de um mundo em transformação (digital e não só).

The last decade brings us a quite global, complex and complete digital ecosystem, the so called VUCA world were volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity is a common setting for any organization. Digital data and information, appliances, information artifacts and any sort of products and applications emerge, more connective due to its digital nature. Even considering different contexts, almost any economic sector, social or work setting was affected by a common digital base. Thus, whatever perspective that we can take on, this digital base made some sort of impact both in the way we work, and organize ourselves. It also alters the ways we interact and support human relationships both as individuals and as organizations. It is expected that such a digital ecosystem enhances and transforms hard skills related with information and communication technologies and the same with information based skills. Not so clear, the same happens to soft skills and the need to address new challenges in how we deal with human activity. In particular, concerning leadership and governance, there is a need to discuss emerging alternatives in a digital ecosystem.

O digital e o modo como este se apropriou do espaço de leitura é atualmente aceite por todos. De facto, lê-se (e escreve-se) cada vez mais, mas em sequências curtas e de forma não estruturada. Neste contexto, a biblioteca enquanto oferta de espaço de leitura deve ser reinventada de modo a aprofundar os tempos e os ritmos de leitura que proporcionem um portal para o encontro do leitor consigo próprio e lhe permita a expansão das narrativas pelo seu próprio intelecto e pensamento (â imagem de um ouvinte e observador, daquilo que o rodeia). Esta proposta de valor para a biblioteca tem potencial para reinventar a biblioteca física e para estender as funcionalidades da biblioteca digital para além da gestão do catálogo e do acesso aos textos, com os naturais benefícios de lidar com o excesso de informação e disrupção das restrições de tempo e espaço (importantes, mas vistos aqui apenas como parte do real potencial). A apresentação partilha uma breve contribuição para um relacionamento entre leitura, o livro a biblioteca (digital ou não) tendo por base um confessado estatuto de amante de livros e da leitura.

The presentation explores the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) from its inception to its current status in the modern world. The term "artificial intelligence" was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to describe efforts to develop computer programs capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media. The presentation also discusses the ethical implications and the need for regulation in AI, highlighting issues such as privacy, bias, and the potential for misuse. These concerns have prompted calls for comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe and equitable use of AI technologies. Artificial intelligence has also played a significant role in healthcare, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it was used in drug discovery, vaccine development, and analyzing the spread of the virus. The capabilities of AI in healthcare are vast, ranging from medical diagnostics to personalized medicine, demonstrating the technology's potential to revolutionize fields beyond just technical or consumer applications. In conclusion, AI continues to be a rapidly evolving field with significant implications for various aspects of society. The development from theoretical concepts to real-world applications illustrates both the potential benefits and the challenges that come with integrating advanced technologies into everyday life.
