2. Shrek is a controversial fantasy story. In one hand you have all the archetypal aspects of a fantasy paradigm the princess: the prince, the villain, the dragon, the magic and the myths although on the other hand you have characters that fart, a donkey that is consistently cracking jokes and a stereotypical beautiful princess that unconventionally chooses to change to the look and life of an ogre (which is normally depicted in conventional fantasy stories as an evil disgusting creature). Nearly every character in Shrek supports and then abruptly contradicts the archetypal fantasy character. Princess Fiona is one of the foremost characters that contradicts the norm, not only by her chosen image and lifestyle, but also her personality as she is shown ninja like fighting off woodland thieves, burping loudly and more profoundly her decision to shun her ‘Prince Charming’ and fall in love with the Ogre; who somehow defeated the dragon and rescued her from her tower. Conversely most fantasy stories the princess is depicted as a creature whom no one can match her beauty or is the girl who discovers her beauty and falls in deeply in love with the prince and lives happily ever after. Fiona does have her version of a ‘happy ever after’ though, but in the most contradictory way possible, in love with and ogre who lives in a swamp. SHREK – paragraph writing exercise
