in our September issue
(on sale 23 Aug)
Fresh&fabulous!
Welcome
SEASHELLS ON THE SHORE,
seagulls in the sky and sand between
your toes - we think it’s fair to say
nothing beats a scorching day at the
beach. And it’s not just family holidays
and day trips that benefit from a few
rays of sunshine, this natural light is
perfect for some alfresco stitching too!
Get stuck into our delightful trio
of beach huts (1),packed with sunny
shades of neon threads.To complete
our coastal look,we’ve even finished ours off with
a few strips of chalky blue fabric from the aptly
named online shop Deckchair Stripes - lovely!
If you’re after something a bit more adventurous,
have a go at crafting yourself an eye-catching shaped
fish cushion (3).It’s easier to make than it looks.
When the sun comes out,so do all the stylish
sunglasses. Protect your shades with a contemporary
case (2) in a rainbow spectrum of colours. Why not
make one for a friend and team up with one of our
cute birthday cards (4) as a cheery summer gift?

JUST FOR FUN
26. ome of the most exciting
embroidery artists
currently catching our
eye are those combining
stitching with other art forms.
We’ve spotted needles and thread
being applied to everything from
photos to screen prints, but the
work of Linda Calverley has to be
among our favourites. Combining
embroidery with her own digitally
manipulated prints and techniques
such as painting, her work has
fantastic depth, texture and
vibrancy. We sat down for a chat
with her about how she embarked
on a creative journey relatively late
in life, and steal a few tips on how to
try out her style at home...
Tell us a bit about yourself – how
did you become an artist?
I’m married and have two grown-up
children. I was a stay-at-home mum
S
but tried my hand at designing knitting
motifs and patterns while the children
were small, then later started making
cross stitch patterns. I wanted to learn a
bit more about freestyle embroidery so
enrolled on a City and Guilds course,
and enjoyed it so much that I decided
to go even further and try for a degree
at Cleveland College of Art and
Design. I finally completed my BA in
Textiles and Surface Design in 2005 at
the age of 52.
Have you always been creative
and crafty?
Yes, I suppose I have. As a small child
I enjoyed colouring books and cutting
figures and furniture from catalogues
to make paper dolls and homes. I also
won an egg decorating competition!
Later in senior school I was introduced
to embroidery – the girls had to do it
instead of art. I enjoyed embroidery
but wanted to do art too!
How would you describe your
artistic style?
An eclectic mix of experimental mixed
media techniques.
Linda CalverleyThe textile artist explains how she creates her
stunning mixed media pieces and offers her own DIY tips

An interview with...
Interview by Jessica Bateman
27. Who or what inspires you?
It could be anything – a flower, a
landscape, a textured rock or even just
words. Whenever I experience a
mental block I find talking to my arty
friends helpful – something they say
can often spark an idea off. I’ve stayed
in touch with some of the girls I met at
college – we meet regularly to chat and
show each other what we’ve been
working on. ³
How did you first start combining
embroidery with digital imagery?
What gave you the idea?
During my degree I was introduced
to digital printing, and my final show
was a range of digitally printed fabrics.
After graduating I purchased a used A3
printer and fitted it with fabric inks,
and also began altering photographs on
the computer to use as fabric designs. I
then started wondering what the fabric
would look like wrapped around a
canvas and how to make it look
different to a photograph.
Talk us through your creative
process
It changes with each piece – it’s quite
experimental and based on trial and
error. If something doesn’t work well
then I’ll try a different way the next
time. For example, Magical & Mystical
uses digitally printed and transferred
printed fabric with appliqué,

and beading on top. With Time for
Tea, I painted parts of a vintage
tablecloth and used it as the
background. Different items in the
scene were painted, embellished with
hand embroidery and attached to the
background cloth. I also hand quilted
the ‘wallpaper’ in the background.
My big printer has long since broken,
so if I want small pieces (up to A4) of
digital imagery I now use transfer
paper. If I want a larger piece printing
then I find a company to do it for me.
I’ve also started using pattern design
site Spoonflower to sell my designs.
Who are your favourite artists
working with textiles/
embroidery right now?
Miyuki Sakai, Annemieke Mein,
Sue Stone, Mister Finch, Frederique
Morrel, Cayce Zavaglia and Michala
Gyetvai (Kayla Coo).
Do you practise any other crafts
for pleasure at home?
As well as embroidery I also enjoy
book making, fabric design, stamp
making, mono prints, button making,
photo montages, experimenting with
new techniques... lots of things really!
I am currently working on themed
books in different colours and am
trying to use up some of the huge
stash of materials and treasures that
I’ve accumulated over the years.
My husband recently bought me a
Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and I’m
really enjoying using it creatively.

GIVE IT A TRY
If you’d like to unleash your
creativity and give Linda’s style
of stitched art a go, you may be
pleasantly surprised to find it’s
easier than you think. Here are
her top tips for beginners…
1Start with a small project – try the
A4 pre-prepared fabric sheets for
inkjet printers or T-shirt transfer papers.
Avoid the very plastic-like ones though
– they’re not good for stitching on.
2If you don’t want to put fabric
through the computer, there are
other ways of transferring images – try
gel medium, mod podge or freezer
paper (wax paper) without fabric. There
are lots of tutorials available online.
3Print the design on paper first to
check for mistakes and ensure you
still like it – sometimes things look a little
different on a computer screen! If it’s
larger than A4, print out sections and
join them together.
4When using fabric in a computer
– whether pre-prepared or
creating your own with freezer paper –
make sure it goes in the printer straight
to avoid getting stuck.
5Make sure there are no loose
threads at the edges of the fabric
before using the printer.
6Some projects don’t look their best
until they are totally finished, so
don’t be put off along the way!

What to make
With a little imagination you
can use our motifs on all kinds
of projects...
1Stitch your favourite onto
plastic canvas. Cut out and
attach to a denim jacket or
canvas tote.
2Make a hippy headband.
Stitch a few small designs
on a long thin strip of felt and
sew the ends together.
3Stitch onto some
patterned fabric and make
into a drawstring bag, perfect
for a sunflower seed snack.

I made this summer wreath using the
bee and ladybug patterns from the
March 2012 issue.
Megan Parkinson, USA
I’ve done nearly all the designs in yourmagazine since I got a subscription lastSeptember, but this was my favourite.
Ren Taylor, Suffolk
This is my first big stitching project. Iwas so pleased with how it turned out
that I had it professionally framed!
Rebecca Licence, Hampshire
Here are my two latest complete projects.I’ve been managing to stitch one piece amonth since February – phew!
Cecile Araneta Cacho, Philippines
I started cross stitching aged 23, and
was taught by two women from a localcraft club. I find it so relaxing.
Tom Brealey, Swadlincote
I stitched this bookmark using motifs from
Let’s Get Inspired in the Holiday 2013

Veronica Paratico, Italy
This is my finished butterfly from the
April 2013 issue. I will hang it with
pride in my daughter’s room.
Monique Spierenburgh, Netherlands
I took this scene from the cards in the

and made it into a hanger for my uncle.

D
oing the laundry is never high on our list of favourite tasks
– we’d always much rather be stitching – so any accessory that
can make this chore just that little bit more glamorous is a
winner in our books. With the help of a needle, thread and sewing
machine you can whip up this beautiful embellished bag to stash your
pegs in and prettify your washing line. The design is reminiscent of
vintage linens, and we love the appliquéed details.

TOP TIPS FROM DESIGNER...
Jenny Dixon
I’ve loved making things for as long as
I can remember. Blue Peter was essential
viewing, and my whole family
were always forced to hand over any
interesting empty boxes, fabric scraps
or tape they had lying around. Stitching
became my passion around the age of
nine when I received an embroidery set
in a little cardboard chest of drawers for
Christmas. The top opened to reveal a
heavenly selection of thread reels in
every colour imaginable. I just used to
stare at it – it was far too lovely to use!
Eventually my mum patiently taught
me lazy daisy stitch, which then
featured on all my dolls’ clothes.
I’ve been lucky enough to work for
all sorts of craft magazines over the
years, and was thrilled to be asked
to contribute to the latest book in the
Mollie Makes series. These are my tips
to help you enjoy my swallows peg bag.
Brighten up dull tasks
Look around for practical items to
embellish. It can really cheer up the
household chores if you have practical
items to enjoy as you work.
Add interest with appliqué
My peg bag design is full of little
‘cheats’. First off, there’s no difficult
stitching. Using appliqué shapes in
pretty prints does a lot of the decorative
work for you. It uses the tiniest of scraps,
so it’s worth saving every little off-cut.
Bondaweb is your best friend
It’ll make stitching around your
appliqué shapes easier and prevent frayed
edges if you miss a bit (everyone does!)
It’s a numbers game
You only have to use one stitch for this
project (chain stitch) which is varied
by working in different numbers of
threads. Voilà – you’ve learnt one
stitch but doubled your repertoire.
Do the hoop-la
My most formal piece of advice is that
it pays to use a hoop. It only needs to be
small, and you can move it around the
fabric as you work parts of the design.
It makes your project portable too.
Drink up!
My most fun advice is what quilter
Barbara Chainey told me – pour a gin
and tonic to help relax and get into a
great stitching rhythm. Cheers!
