3. Christmas Tree in the Bible
• Deuteronomy 12:2 You shall surely destroy all
the places where the nations whom you shall
dispossess served their gods, on the high
mountains and on the hills and under every
green tree.
4. Kings of Israel and Judah
• 1 Kings 23-24 For they also built for
themselves high places and pillars and
Asherim on every high hill and under every
green tree, and there were also male cult
prostitutes in the land. They did according to
all the abominations of the nations that
YHVH drove out before the people of Israel.
5. Kings of Israel and Judah (2)
• 2 Kings 16:2 Ahaz was twenty years old when he
began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in
Jerusalem. And he did not do what was right in
the eyes of YHVH his God, as his father David had
done, but he walked in the way of the kings of
Israel. He even burned his son as an offering,
according to the despicable practices of the
nations whom YHVH drove out before the people
of Israel. And he sacrificed and made offerings
on the high places and on the hills and under
every green tree.
6. Kings of Israel and Judah (3)
• 2 Kings 17:10-12 They set up for themselves
pillars and Asherim on every high hill and
under every green tree, and there they made
offerings on all the high places, as the nations
did whom YHVH carried away before them.
And they did wicked things, provoking YHVH
to anger, and they served idols, of which
YHVH had said to them, “You shall not do
this.”
7. Kings of Israel and Judah (4)
• 2 Chronicles 28:2-4 but he walked in the ways
of the kings of Israel. He even made metal
images for the Baals, and he made offerings in
the Valley of the Son of Hinnom and burned
his sons as an offering, according to the
abominations of the nations whom YHVH
drove out before the people of Israel. And he
sacrificed and made offerings on the high
places and on the hills and under every green
tree.
8. Jeremiah
• Jeremiah 2:20 “For long ago I broke your yoke
and burst your bonds; but you said, ‘I will not
serve.’ Yes, on every high hill and under every
green tree you bowed down like a whore.
• Jeremiah 3:6 YHVH said to me in the days of
King Josiah: “Have you seen what she did,
that faithless one, Israel, how she went up on
every high hill and under every green tree,
and there played the whore?
9. Jeremiah (2)
• Jeremiah 3:13 Only acknowledge your guilt, that
you rebelled against YHVH your God and
scattered your favors among foreigners under
every green tree, and that you have not obeyed
my voice, declares YHVH.
• Jeremiah 17:1-2 “The sin of Judah is written
with a pen of iron; with a point of diamond it is
engraved on the tablet of their heart, and on the
horns of their altars, while their children
remember their altars and their Asherim, beside
every green tree and on the high hills,
10. Jeremiah (3)
• Jeremiah 10:1-5 Hear the word that YHVH speaks to
you, O house of Israel. Thus says YHVH: “Learn not the
way of the nations, nor be dismayed at the signs of the
heavens because the nations are dismayed at them, for
the customs of the peoples are vanity. A tree from the
forest is cut down and worked with an axe by the
hands of a craftsman. They decorate it with silver and
gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it
cannot move. Their idols are like scarecrows in a
cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be
carried, for they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them,
for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do
good.”
11. Jeremiah (4)
• Jeremiah 16:19-20 O YHVH, my strength and my
stronghold, my refuge in the day of trouble, to
you shall the nations come from the ends of the
earth and say: “Our fathers have inherited
nothing but lies, worthless things in which there
is no profit. Can man make for himself gods?
Such are not gods!” “Therefore, behold, I will
make them know, this once I will make them
know my power and my might, and they shall
know that my name is YHVH.”
12. Ezekiel
• Ezekiel 6:13 And you shall know that I am
YHVH, when their slain lie among their idols
around their altars, on every high hill, on all
the mountaintops, under every green tree,
and under every leafy oak, wherever they
offered pleasing aroma to all their idols.
13. Isaiah
• Isaiah 14 describes the defeat of the Antichrist
(the King of Babylon) and Satan. Interestingly
right in the middle of this verses we see that
the tradition of cutting the Christmas Tree (to
bring it into houses) is abolished!!!
• Isaiah 14:8 The cypresses rejoice at you, the
cedars of Lebanon, saying, ‘Since you were
laid low, no woodcutter comes up against us.’
