In the past decade, internet of things (IoT) has been a focus of research. Security and privacy are the key issues for IoT applications, and still face some enormous challenges. In order to facilitate this emerging domain, we in brief review the research progress of IoT, and pay attention to the security. By means of deeply analyzing the security architecture and features, the security requirements are given. On the basis of these, we discuss the research status of key technologies including encryption mechanism, communication security, protecting sensor data and cryptographic algorithms, and briefly outline the challenges.

As reiterated by many authors, internet of things (IoT) is the network of physical devices, vehicles, home appliances, and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and connectivity which enables these things to connect and exchange data, creating opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems, resulting in efficiency improvements, economic benefits, and reduced human exertions. This is made possible by the communications models with the enabling technologies which make communications possible among IoT connected devices, although, with drawbacks. These drawbacks are the major reasons for adoption problems of IoT services by the society. This paper carried out an investigative study on previous works on the societal applications and adoption problems of IoT, IoT communications models, and pros and cons of IoT. Through the study, it was revealed that for IoT devices and services to be widely adopted with no or minimal problems, future IoT technology will not only address the known drawbacks but also will require hardware and software components that are highly interoperable, dependable, reconfigurable, and, in many applications, certifiable.

As the majority of the people in India uses Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) as a fuel for cooking, but in India the technology applied in this field (security) is very less. Liquefied petroleum gas is a flammable gas, which has the potential to create a hazard. Therefore it is important that the properties and safe handling of LPG are understood and applied in the domestic and commercial/industrial situations. The proposed paper is aimed at developing a prototype that constantly monitors the gas leak with the help of the electronic sensors. This data is made available real time through real time feeds over the internet. We intend to use Xively (new platform) to feed real time sensor data over the internet. The sensor monitors, detects and raises an alarm whenever a gas leak or fire broke out condition is detected. Then it raised an emergency alarm. The emergency alarm condition can be handled through proper arrangement and alert message to rescue team, which could be an in house rescue team. Based on the real time data feed connected to Xively, user can easily look at the history of data and accurately determine the time and date at which emergency condition occurred. This data helps in easily locating the root cause of the emergency condition occurred. This data helps in easily locating the root cause of the emergency condition. So that one can know the complete detail of the hazard.

Research initiatives to redesign the Internet are popping up all around the globe. Some claim that the Internet must be redesigned from the information point of view. This approach goes under the banner of information-centrism. In the other hand, other initiatives claim that the design must be centered on the services, i.e. the service-centrism or the Internet of services. And there are also those focusing on decoupling host identifiers from locators to improve mobility support. Which is the right path to follow? We contend that none of them alone, but instead, to integrate synergistically them all. We call this approach the Internet of information and services.

The increasing proliferation of mobile devices with Internet access contributed to clarify some important limitations of TCP/IP stack regarding mobility, multihoming, traceability and security. In its original design, Internet IP addresses were overloaded to simultaneously support host identification (ID) and location (Loc). As a consequence, application functionality can be affected when IP addresses are changed to update mobile nodes location. This dual functionality causes many problems in the current Internet, especially in supporting mobility. To deal with this limitations several solutions based on the idea of ID/Loc splitting have been proposed. In this position paper we present and compare some of them, summarizing their main features and limitations. We also identify opportunities and challenges for future research in the area as well as expected impacts/relations with other Future Internet aspects. www.inatel.br/iwt

Service convergence, content digitization, rapid and flexible service delivery, reduction of capital and operating costs, economies of scale, changes in telecom policy and regulation, and ever increasing competition have been key factors in the evolution of virtualized Next Generation Networks (vNGN). IP-centric converged networks aim to provide a multitude of services over a single network infrastructure. Tremendous success and benefit of server virtualization in data centers is driving the adaption of network virtualization. Network virtualization is applicable to enterprise data center, and enterprise as well as wide area networks. The focus of this paper is network virtualization aspects of service providers’ next generation network. The key factors for moving to virtualized network is optimal use and sharing of network infrastructure even among competitive service providers, programmability of network and rapid introduction of new service and standard based on open platform rather than proprietary implementation. Evolving Software Defined Network (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) shall enable common network infrastructure sharing, control, and management at a higher layer thus making network devices more generic and less intelligent, thus enabling cost competitiveness and quick service delivery. Network virtualization shall enable key benefits such as lower cost, flexibility, efficiency, and security, However, the deployment of virtualized next generation networks has brought its unique challenges for network managers and planners, as the network has to be planned in a comprehensive way with effective management of virtual network elements, its correlation with physical infrastructure and monitoring of control functions and server platforms. This paper discusses generic next generation network, its virtualization, and addresses the challenges related to the planning and managing of virtualized next generation networks. This paper proposes a reference OSS model enabling effective management of vNGN, which is key contribution of this paper.

The (r)evolution of wireless access infrastructure can be described as the convergence of the available radio communication systems towards a harmonized, more flexible and reconfigurable access system to match the current and upcoming demands. In recent years Softwarization and Virtualization technologies have moved from server and network domains to wireless domain and provides new perspectives of managing mobile networks functionalities. This paper provides evolution of the mobile network architecture in Software Defined Networking (SDN) and virtualization context and realizes it through the use of distribution of gateway function approach. Key improvements with proposed approach are to support efficient mobility management in heterogeneous access environments, remove the chains of IP preservation and optimal data path management according to application needs. A functional setup validates and assays the proposed evolution in terms of inter-system handover preparation, interruption and completion time relative to control plane delay requirements of the 5G networks.

With their increasingly sophisticated applications, users promote the notion that there is more to a network (be it an intranet, or the Internet) than mere L1-3 connectivity. In what shapes a next generation service contract between users and the network, users want the network to offer services that are as ubiquitous and dependable as dial tones. Typical services include application-aware firewalls, directories, nomadic support, virtualization, load balancing, alternate site failover, etc. To fulfill this vision, a service architecture is needed. That is, an architecture wherein end-to-end services compose, on-demand, across network domains, technologies, and administration boundaries. Such an architecture requires programmable mechanisms and programmable network devices for service enabling, service negotiation, and service management. The bedrock foundation of the architecture, and also the key focus of the paper, is an open-source programmable service platform that is explicitly designed to best exploit commercial-grade network devices. The platform predicates a full separation of concerns, in that control-intensive operations are executed in software, whereas, data-intensive operations are delegated to hardware. This way, the platform is capable of performing wire-speed content filtering, and activating network services according to the state of data and control flows. The paper describes the platform and some distinguishing services realized on the platform.

Peer-to-Peer Architecture Case Study: Gnutella Network Matei Ripeanu Computer Science Department, The University of Chicago [email protected] Abstract Despite recent excitement generated by the P2P paradigm and despite surprisingly fast deployment of some P2P applications, there are few quantitative evaluations of P2P systems behavior. Due to its open architecture and achieved scale, Gnutella is an interesting P2P architecture case study. Gnutella, like most other P2P applications, builds at the application level a virtual network with its own routing mechanisms. The topology of this overlay network and the routing mechanisms used have a significant influence on application properties such as performance, reliability, and scalability. We built a ‘crawler’ to extract the topology of Gnutella’s application level network, we analyze the topology graph and evaluate generated network traffic. We find that although Gnutella is not a pure power-law network, its current configuration has the benefits and drawbacks of a power-law structure. These findings lead us to propose changes to Gnutella protocol and implementations that bring significant performance and scalability improvements. 1. Introduction Peer-to-peer systems (P2P) have emerged as a significant social and technical phenomenon over the last year. P2P systems provide infrastructure for communities that share CPU cycles (e.g., Entropia, [email protected]) and/or, storage space (e.g., FreeNet, Gnutella), or that support interpersonal collaborative environments. Two factors have fostered the recent explosive growth of such systems: first, the low cost and high availability of huge computing and storage resources, and second, increased network connectivity. As these trends continue, the P2P paradigm can be expected to become more popular. Peer-to-peer networks allow individual computers to communicate directly with each other and to share information and resources without using specialized ‘servers’. A common characteristic of this new breed of applications is that they build, at the application level, a virtual network with its own routing mechanisms. The topology of this virtual network and the routing mechanisms used have a significant influence on application properties such as performance, reliability, and, in some cases, anonymity. The virtual topology also determines the communication costs incurred when running the P2P application. These considerations have motivated us to conduct a detailed study of the topology and protocol of a popular P2P system, Gnutella. In this study, we benefited from Gnutella’s large existing user base and open architecture, and, in effect, use the public Gnutella network as a large- scale, if uncontrolled, testbed. We capture the network topology, the generated traffic, and the resources’ dynamic behavior. Software Defined Networking, the emerging technology is taking the network sector to a new variant. Software Defined Networking paves a platform identifying a feasible solution to the problem by virtualization. Software Defined Networking provides a viable path in virtualization and managing the network resources in an “On Demand Manner”. This study is focused on the drawbacks of the existing technology and a fine grained introduction to Software Defined Networking. Further adding to the above topic, this study also passes over the current steps taken in the industrial sector in implementing Software Defined Networking. As SD-WAN disrupts legacy WAN technologies and becomes the preferred WAN technology adopted by corporations, and Kubernetes becomes the de-facto container orchestration tool, the opportunities for deploying edge-computing containerized applications running over SD-WAN are vast. Service orchestration in SD-WAN has not been provided with enough attention, resulting in the lack of research focused on service discovery in these scenarios. In this article, an in-house service discovery solution that works alongside Kubernetes’ master node for allowing improved traffic handling and better user experience when running micro-services is developed. The service discovery solution was conceived following a design science research approach. Our research includes the implementation of a proof-ofconcept SD-WAN topology alongside a Kubernetes cluster that allows us to deploy custom services and delimit the necessary characteristics of our in-house solution. Also, the implementation's performance is tested based on the required times for updating the discovery solution according to service updates. Finally, some conclusions and modifications are pointed out based on the results, while also discussing possible enhancements.

Managing network complexity, accommodating greater numbers of subscribers, improving coverage to support data services (e.g. email, video, and music downloads), keeping up to speed with fast-changing technology, and driving maximum value from existing networks – all while reducing CapEX and OpEX and ensuring Quality of Service (QoS) for the network and Quality of Experience (QoE) for the user. These are just some of the pressing business issues faced by mobileservice providers, summarized by the demand to “achieve more, for less.” The ultimate goal of optimization techniques at the network and application layer is to ensure End-user perceived QoS. The next generation networks (NGN), a composite environment of proven telecommunications and Internet-oriented mechanisms have become generally recognized as the telecommunications environment of the future. However, the nature of the NGN environment presents several complex issues regarding quality assurance that have not existed in the legacy environments (e.g., multi-network, multi-vendor, and multi-operator IP-based telecommunications environment, distributed intelligence, third-party provisioning, fixed-wireless and mobile access, etc.). In this Research Paper, a service aware policy-based approach to NGN quality assurance is presented, taking into account both perceptual quality of experience and technologydependant quality of service issues. The respective procedures, entities, mechanisms, and profiles are discussed. The purpose of the presented approach is in research, development, and discussion of pursuing the end-to-end controllability of the quality of the multimedia NGN-based communications in an environment that is best effort in its nature and promotes end user’s access agnosticism, service agility, and global mobility

The virtualization concept along with its underlyin g technologies has been warmly adopted in many fiel ds of computer science. In this direction, network vir tualization research has presented considerable res ults. In a parallel development, the convergence of two d istinct worlds, communications and computing, has increased the use of computing server resources (vi rtual machines and hypervisors acting as active network elements) in network implementations. As a result, the level of detail and complexity in such architectures has increased and new challenges need to be taken into account for effective network management. Information and data models facilitate infrastructure representation and management and have been used extensively in that direction. In th is paper we survey available modelling approaches a nd discuss how these can be used in the virtual machin e (host) based computer network landscape; we prese nt a qualitative analysis of the current state-of-the- art and offer a set of recommendations on adopting any particular method.

Overview of NovaGenesis future Internet architecture. NovaGenesis (NG) is an alternative information architecture that covers data processing, exchanging and storage. The project has idealized an alternative architecture for the current Internet and has been demonstrated viable for IoT and cognitive radio. NG has been evaluated as an alternative to domain name service (DNS), named-data routing and network caching (for efficient content distribution) and software-defined networks. Due to its service-oriented design (SOD) with support for virtualization, software-defined networking and virtual network functions, it can be seen as a 5G architecture as well. In this context, NovaGenesis is a “clean slate” architecture that cohesively integrates many novel ingredients at its core, including exposition of physical things to software, programmable networks (SDN and NFV), service-defined architecture (SDA), ICN, SOA, SCN, IoT, SON, among others. Internet of things is a disruptive technology that is impacting many verticals in modern economy. The future of IoT can be evolutionary or revolutionary. Evolutionary means to keep backward compatibility with current Internet technologies, while revolutionary means novel architectures that deeply redesign the status quo. In this paper, we experimentally evaluate a future Internet of things approach called NovaGenesis. For this aim, we employ virtual sensors (emulated in software) to demonstrate a service-defined IoT architecture based on smart objects, self-verifying naming, dynamic resource and services orchestration, software-defined control and contract-based operation. In this paper, we aim at verifying scalability of NovaGenesis distributed temporary cache. Presented results suggest NovaGenesis hash table service can provide the required scalability in a local domain.
