Population distribution and economic development in South Africa
1.
2.
3. South Africa is located in the southern part of
Africa.
It is bordered by 6 countries.
It is flanked by the Atlantic ocean on the West
and the Indian ocean on the East.
4.
5. South Africa's population distribution is
generally uneven.
The core economic regions such as Gauteng
are densely populated with population.
densities of 100km² Some very large areas of
Northern Cape Province have a population
density of less than 5km².
6.
7. Areas with a very large amount of minerals
tend to have very large populations.
Some minerals found in this areas include:
Diamond
Gold
Areas which are arid are sparsely populated
and have very low population densities.
Areas with fertile soil and high rainfall are
also densely populated e.g. Durban and Cape
town.
8. Core is more densely populated than the
periphery.
It more developed than the periphery
It has better infrastructure and a higher
variety and quality of goods and services than
the periphery.
9. Internal migration
This is migration within ones country or borders
Internal migration in south Africa is circular as
people relocate or move repeatedly between the
host areas and their homes.
It is mainly caused by 3 factors:
economic migration due to industrial
development.
Forced migration due to apartheid
Voluntary migration due to collapse of the
apartheid system
10.
11. Increase in substandard housing at the edge
of major towns
May cause overpopulation in some areas.
Traffic jams as there is pressure on roads.
Increase in crime rates
12.
13. This is a political and social system that was
employed in South Africa when South Africa
was under colonial rule.
It is a system that was characterised by
authoritarian rule and racial segregation,
thereby separating black and white South
Africans.

Notas do Editor
The countries bordering South Africa are:Namibia,Lesotho,Mozambique,Swaziland,Zimbabwe,Botswana.
Areas with minerals provide employment opportunities to those who work as labourers.
Areas that are arid have low population due the very high temperatures and dry conditions
The presence of informal settlements at the outskirts of the core supports the concept that the core is normally surrounded by an underdeveloped periphery.
Fertile soil and high amounts of rainfall are suitable for economic activities such as agriculture
Overpopulation in areas where migration is not circular
