This document discusses locative media and how it increases the relevance of place. It provides context about how during World War 2, women sent radio messages from ships to the port of Quebec, representing local communication. With writing and new technologies, the contexts of production and reception became detached. Locative media, using mobile devices and location-based awareness, is a form of communication that increases the relevance of place by allowing for copresence through mobile interaction between places.

FIRST OF ALL, I’D LIKE TO START THIS PRESENTATION ENTITLED “LE CHANT DES SIRÈNES”: LOCATIVE MEDIA AND THE INCREASE OF THE RELEVANCE OF THE PLACE WITH THIS SOUND.
“ LE CHANT”
THIS SOUND IS PART OF A LOCATIVE MEDIA PROJECT IMPLEMENTED IN THE PORT OF QUEBEC IN CANADA IN 2011 AND DEVELOPED BY CLÁUDIO BUENO, AN ELETRONIC ARTIST FROM SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL, DURING A RESIDENCE AT LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE IN QUEBEC CITY.
THE “SONG” RECOUNTS, SYMBOLICALLY, THE STORY OF EIGHT WOMEN WHO WORKED DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR, SENDING RADIO MESSAGES FROM THE SHIPS TO THE PORT OF QUEBEC. THEY DIED DURING A BOMBING AND THIS WORK AIMS TO HONOR THIS WOMEN AND THEIR MEMORIES. BY THIS PROJECT, THE VISITORS CAN DOWNLOAD AN MOBILE APP AND HEAR VIA GEOTAGGING “LE CHANT” THAT REPRESENTS THE LAMENT OF THESE WOMEN FOR THEIR CHILDREN, HUSBANDS, LISTENERS... BUT HOW THIS LOCATIVE MEDIA PROJECT CAN INCREASE THE RELEVANCE OF THE PLACE?
HOWEVER, BEFORE ANSWER THIS QUESTION, I’D LIKE TO PRESENT FOUR FORMS OF COMMUNICATION BASED ON THE STUDY OF THE PLACE. FIRSTLY, THE LOCAL COMMUNICATION WHICH THE CHARACTERISTICS ARE A FACE TO FACE INTERACTION BASED ON PRIMARY ORALITY WITH THE COPRESENCE OF PRODUCERS, TRANSMITTERS AND RECEPTORS OF INFORMATION.
ACCORDING TO HAVELOCK, THIS KIND OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION DATES FROM ANCIENT TIMES AND IT’S TYPICAL AMONG MEMBERS OF FAMILY THAT LIVED IN THE SAME PLACE OR TWO OR MORE PERSONS WHO ARE IN A SAME PUBLIC SPACE . THESE CONDITIONS SET THE PLACE IN THE MAJOR LEVEL OF RELEVANCE. .
BUT WRITING CAME TO SEPARATE AND UNTIE THE CONTEXTS OF PRODUCTION, EMISSION AND RECEPTION OF THE INFORMATION. IN THIS TIME, THE SECONDARY ORALITY ARISES AND CONTRIBUTES TO THE LOSS OF THE SPATIAL BOND BETWEEN THE CONTEXTS.
THE SECOND FORM, THE SITUATED COMMUNICATION, WAS INTENSIFIED BY THE ELECTRIC REVOLUTION.
NOW, WE HAVE AN MEDIATED INTERACTION AND QUASI-MEDIATED INTERACTION BASED ON THE "ELETRO MEDIA" AS THE TELEPHONE, RADIO AND TV. THE CONTEXT OF PRODUCTION AND EMISSON ARE DETACHED FROM THE CONTEXT OF RECEPTION OF INFORMATION. THE CONSEQUENCE IS: FROM THIS MOMENT, THE PLACE OF COMMUNICATION BEGINS TO LOSE ITS RELEVANCE.
THE LOWEST LEVEL OF THE RELEVANCE IS REACHED BY THE THIRD FORM, THE GLOBAL COMMUNICATION. IN THIS TIME, WE HAVE “THE SPRAYING” OF PLACES GIVING RISE TO THE “INFINITE PLACES”.
BASED ON THE BIT MEDIA, THE INTERNET AND THE CELLPHONE NETWORK WHICH CHARACTERISTIC IS A MULTIMEDIA INTERACTION, IN THIS FORM OF COMMUNICATION, WE HAVE ALSO THE POSSIBILITY OF INTERCHANGEABLE ROLES BETWEEN THE PRODUCERS, TRANSMITTERS AND RECEPTORS OF INFORMATION.
LOCATIVE MEDIA SEEK TO INTEGRATE DIFFERENT PLACES OF THE URBAN SPACE AND THE PEOPLE WHO PASS BY HIM, RAISING THE “AWARENESS” ABOUT THESE PLACES. THE FIRST LOCATIVE MEDIA PROJECTS ARE ORIGINATED FROM INSTALLATIONS AND PERFORMANCES OF ART AND TECHNOLOGY THAT HAPPEN IN CERTAIN PLACES. SOON, THIS CONCEPT WAS EXTENDED BY OTHER TOOLS SUCH AS GEO POSITIONING SYSTEMS (GPS), GEOLOCATION TECHNOLOGIES (GEOTAGGING, MAPPING, LBT / LBS) COMBINING DIGITAL MAPS WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE INTERNET.
IN THESE LOCATIVE MEDIA PROJECTS, WE CAN PERCEIVE A INCREASE IN THE RELEVANCE OF THE PLACE. THEY ARE EXAMPLES OF THE FOURTH FORM OF COMMUNICATION, THE LOCATIVE COMMUNICATION.
THEREFORE, THE LOCATIVE COMMUNICATION IS A FORM OF COMMUNICATION RESULTING FROM THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE PLACES AND MOBILE DEVICES. ITS CHARACTERISTICS ARE: MOBILE INTERFACE INTERACTION WITH COPRESENCE OF PRODUCERS, TRANSMITTERS AND RECEPTORS OF INFORMATION HOW WE CAN SEE, MUCH SIMILAR TO THE FIRST FORM, THE LOCAL COMMUNICATION. SOMETHING LIKE A RETAKEN IN THE RELEVANCE OF PLACE.
TO FINISH, I ALSO BELIEVE THAT THE LOCATIVE COMMUNICATION CAN BRING A BETTER COMPREHENSION OF THE CITY, MOSTLY THE POSSIBILITIES OF HEARING IT, INVOKING THE ACOUSTIC SPACES, THE SOUNDSCAPE AND THE SOUND SPACE AS THE REFERENCE FOR THIS RISING OF AWARENESS. THIS COULD BE A WAY... THANKS!
