In the story "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding, he shows how the boys lost all innocence and
civilization. The boys went from having innocent child minds to taking lives of other people,
acting savage, and losing all civilization due to problems on the island. The boys had forgotten
where they came from and became savage in order to survive; it was the need of survival that
caused the loss of innocence among the boys.
At the end of Lord of the Flies, Ralph weeps "for the end of innocence". That's an example that
Ralph did indeed recognize that the boys did lose innocence and that he realized this after leaving
the monstrous island. The beast did indeed cause the boys fear and terror. The cause of Simon's

The excessive hunting showed how the boys just killed for no apparent reason; this is not a
normal thing for an innocent boy to do. It seemed as if all jack wanted to do is hunt instead of
caring about protection and shelter. Humans were killed because the boys began to unravel the
true nature of humans. Simon died when Jack said "Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill His
Blood!" Simon is eventually stabbed with a spear and that causes his death. The boys devour
what they believe is the beast (Simon) and even if it was the beast, eating a beast doesn't sound
like what 'innocent boys' would do. Piggy's death of course was most certainly not an accident.
Rodger clearly knew what he was doing and he was throwing rocks just aiming to cause harm to
someone, the rock hit Piggy and he fell off Castle Rock and died.
The beastie was like the snake in the story of Adam and Eve from the bible. The beast caused
disruption among the boys and the land just as the snake caused disruption to Adam and Eve. In the
story Adam and Eve they are believed to be innocent souls living in a utopia world, just like the
boys first thought that the land was perfect since there were no adults but then the boys created the

Lord of the Flies starts out with a plane crashing on an island. The pilot died so the only people
that survive this crash were a group of boys. In an attempt to bring together everyone on the island
Ralph, one of the main characters, used a shell–like object to get everyone to the beach. After many
boys reached the beach Ralph started a meeting. The boys discussed what they should do to stay
alive and get rescued. They voted that Ralph should be their leader. Another maincharacter is Jack,

Hunger, fear, leadership, and power can lead to destruction in a society. Who doesn't want to feel
powerful and and worthy of honor? Who doesn't want to guide others and create a character that is
strong in body and mind? An island filled with boys going vicious for these characteristics just
makes the situation ten times worse. There is no way that deterioration of society on the island
could have been avoided, especially with boys like Jack and Ralph constantly battling to gain
ultimate control over all the others. Clearly there was antipathy between the two. Instead of working
together, they split themselves apart and lessened their chances of surviving the island. From the

There were so many accusations of innocent boys being the beastie, it eventually led to the death of

and motifs, the main message which is illustrated is one that questions society. It is clear from the
very beginning that is a message conveyed in this novel. On the whole, Golding is portraying a

The Conch shell is used to summon the boys at the beginning and impresses many of them
making them think of him as a natural leader. Seeing there is nothing left of the plane wreckage
the conch shell is one of the only things they have which is linked to society and therefore
becomes a powerful symbol of civilization. It is used throughout the book effectively by Ralph but
when it is flattened it symbolizes the complete downfall of civilization and the loss of control.
Another important symbol in the novel is the beast. It stands for the fear which all of the boys have
and the savagery they all have. All of the boys, especially the littleuns are afraid of the beast but
only Simon recognizes that the fear is within the boys themselves. Because the beast lies within the
boys, more savage they act, the more apparent the beast is.
The loss of power is one very remarkable problem Ralph seems to have from the very start. As
soon as Jack comes into the scene, there is a sense of rebellion. Jack protests in some of the very
first chapters that he should be leader instead, but it led to nothing. Ralph seems to be on top of
things on the whole, but as soon as Jack started trying Ralph's leadership, things went on a downhill

when the name of Jack and the choir boys changed to the chief, Jack, and the tribe, choir boys,

was not even the worst, but later that day their hunter identity really took over when they killed

nature, legitimate governments, and the right to revolution.
William Golding incorporated John Locke's philosophy of the right to revolution in his novel. Locke
stated that individuals had the right to revolt against authority if their government became

rules, chaos does not occur. In Lord of the Flies, the shell signifies society and order. The book
begins with Ralph and Piggy blowing the conch to call the other boys together to order and unity.

Flies by William Golding in class i noticed some similarities between the story and World War 2.

Ralph is the face of leadership and according to everyone but Piggy the best for the job. In this

Innocence In William Golding's Lord Of The Flies
William Goldning's Lord of the Flies is an allegorical novel where literary techniques are utilized to
convey the main ideas and themes of the novel. Two important central themes of the novel includes
loss of civilization and innocense which tie into the concept of innate human evil. Loss of
civilization is simply the transition from civilization to savagery; order to chaos. The concept of
loss of innocense is a key concept to innate human evil because childhood innocense is disrupted as
the group hunted animals and even their own. Through the use of literary techniques these ideas are
seen in the passage where Simon confronts the "Lord of the Flies."

To emphasize fear and evil Goldning seems to use a lot of repetition in this passage alone. For
example the "Lord of the Flies" constantly warns "we shall do you? See?." This is to make Simon
quake with fear and show the intensity of the confrontation between them.
As the boys on the island progress from well–behaved, orderly children longing for rescue to cruel,
bloodthirsty hunters who have no desire to return to civilization, they naturally lose their innocence
that they possessed earlier in the novel. But Golding does not portray this loss of innocence as
something that is done to the children; rather, it results naturally from their increasing openness to
the innate evil and savagery that has always existed within them.
The forest where Simon wanders upon in earlier in the novel symbolizes this loss of innocence.
At first, it is a place of natural beauty and peace, but when Simon returns, he discovers the bloody
sow's head upon a stake in the middle of the forest. This use of imagery depicting ruin is seen in
the passage. "Simon found he was looking into a vast mouth. There was blackness within, a

In the novel, "Lord of the Flies," a group of British boys are left on a deserted island in the middle
of nowhere. Throughout the novel, they have conflicts between civilization and savagery, good
vs. evil, order vs. chaos, and reason vs. impulse. What would it be like if the boys were replaced
by a group of girls? Would they behave the same way they did in the novel? I believe that the girls
would act in the same behavior as the boys in all ways because, everyone is installed with evil
inside them which is their natural instinct, also because in life there is always a power struggle in
all manners, and the outcome with the girls would be similar–since both sexes would plan on getting

This is universal truth, and clearly shows that girls would release their evil and selfishness within
them, just as the boys did especially considering the circumstances and surroundings. Subsequently,
the quote by Thomas Hobbes is also true, since all this evil lead to violence on the island.
Secondly, the girls on the island would act the same as the boys in the sense of choosing a leader
and creating rules. With the boys, there is always a power struggle between Jack and Ralph from
the first time they meet. When the time arrives to choose a leader, Jack blurts, "I ought to be
chief because, I'm chapter chorister and head boy," (pg.14). This shows that he wants to be a
leader no matter what the majority of the boys think, showing him as a dictator. On the contrary,
Ralph is voted for by the boys, showing him to lead a democratic way. When Democracy and
Dictatorship clash, there becomes a power struggle. This power struggle causes them to do horrible
things to each other. For example, when Sam and Eric warn Ralph, "You got to go now, Ralph, for
your own good," (pg.189) when they alert him of Jack's intentions to set the forest on fire. This
shows that no matter what, whether male or female, with human nature, there will always be a
power struggle. In addition, this is also proven by the statement "All power corrupts, absolute power

In William Golding's novel, The Lord of the Flies, a large group of privileged English schoolboys
are stranded on an island in the Pacific with no adults after the plane they were on crash–landed. The
boys are brought together by the Conch that is blown by Ralph in the beginning of the book. The

The first person to turn to the dark side with Jack is Ralph who from the beginning of the book
was not a good seed. This led to many of the boys on the island to change over so they can go out
and have fun. Jack forming his tribe was the cause of Simon's death because he made them
believe that they should kill the beast if they see it and getting them all rallied up when Simon
was coming down from the mountain to tell them that the beast was actually just a dead
parachutist and may be of use to them. Everyone joins in on the fun when Simon comes down
and they mistake him for the beast and kill him. If Jack had not gotten them all hyped up and said
that they can take the beast they would have ran and then found out it was just Simon to tell them
of good news. Jack also was the cause for Piggy's death and the destruction of the conch. The
reason for this was that he had unleashed the boy's demons especially Roger's. Roger had found a
love for torture and killing and when he has the chance to take out one of the good guys when he
can't defend himself he takes his chance and kills Piggy and destroys the conch with the boulder.
He kills two birds with one stone. But, the ironic part is the good prevailed in the end. Jack's tribe
who does not care about getting rescued gets them rescued when they try to kill Ralph in the end of
the book and when adults finally arrive they instantly snap back into good boys again and letting

Greed for Power In the novel Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, a group of English boys in their
adolescence are stranded on an island. They crash–land while being evacuated because of an atomic
war, so the boys must learn to cooperate with each other in order to survive. The boys are civil at
first, but the bonds of civilization unfold as the rapacity for power and immediate desires become
more important than civility and rescue. The conflict between Ralph, the protagonist, and Jack, the

The conch was used to call meetings and whosoever held it, had the power to speak. Jack starts to
disobey the conch because he is turning more and more savage–like. "[T]hey closed in on the
struggling pig, knowledge that they had outwitted a living thing, imposed their will upon it, taken
away its life like a long satisfying drink," thought Jack. As the story progresses, Jack realizes he
wants to kill pigs, not keep fires going for rescue. Jack shouted, "We don't need the conch
anymore." At this point in the novel, Golding is showing the reader that because Jack is lusting for
power, he is turning into a ferocious monster. By turning into a savage, he has lost all sense of
civilization and democracy. By the end of the novel, Jack has become a full blown barbarian. He is
so caught up in killing pigs that he no longer listens to Ralph. He tries to become chief again and
fails. Because of that, he starts his own tribe on the other side of the island where all they do is
