20. Creator: Henri Matisse, French, Le Cateau-Cambrésis, France, 1869-1954, Nice, France\r\nTitle: Esquisse pour "Le bonheur de vivre" (Sketch for "The Joy of Life")\r\nWork Type: painting\r\nDate: 1905-1906\r\nMaterial: oil on canvas\r\nMeasurements: 16 in. x 21 1/2 in. (40.64 cm x 54.61 cm)\r\nDescription:
This work is the final known oil sketch for Matisse's monumental landscape Le bonheur de vivre, now in the collection of the Barnes Foundation in Pennsylvania.

Its liberal and expressive use of color (also apparent in the finished painting) is characteristic of Fauvism, an early modernist movement that also emphasized flattened space and formal qualities such as line and brushwork. Matisse and other Fauvists applied these innovative methods to many traditional artistic subjects, including portraiture, landscape, and the still life.

Deemed the "climactic" work of Fauvism by one critic, the final version of Le bonheur de vivre differs greatly in scale from this study, for the painting is over four times as large. In style, the sketch looks toward Neo-Impressionism with its loose dabs of broken color, while the painting features flat expanses of color and a more linear treatment of the figures.

Although the sketch is a thoroughly modern picture, Matisse also drew from older artistic modes, including French academic painting and the iconography of Greek vases, to create this pastoral scene of carefree innocence and languid, pleasurable repose.
\r\nDescription:
Artist: Along with Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse was one of the pillars of the Parisian avant-garde, whose formal innovations in painting would dominate much of modern art. Matisse initially worked in law, but discovered a passion for art when he began painting as an amateur. He went on to study traditional academic painting. In the early years of the twentieth century, however, he rejected the idea that painting had to imitate the appearance of nature. His characteristic innovations were the use of vibrant, arbitrary colors; bold, autonomous brushstrokes; and a flattening of spatial depth. This anti-naturalistic style inspired the critical name "fauves," or "wild beasts," for the group of painters around Matisse.

Ironically, Matisse often applied his thoroughly modern style to traditional subjects such as still lifes, landscapes, and portraits. Such works express a sense of timeless joy and stillness that runs counter to the frenetic, technologically inspired compositions of many of his contemporaries. Although primarily dedicated to painting, Matisse was also active as a sculptor and printmaker. In the 1940s, in failing health, he embarked on a well-known group of cut-paper collages.
\r\nRepository: San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\r\nRepository: Bequest of Elise S. A readymade is a pre-existing, industrially produced object - e.g. a bicycle wheel, urinal, or bottle rack - that the artist placed on a pedestal with little or no modification.

These banal items became art simply because Duchamp chose to declare them as such and to display them in the rarified space of the museum or gallery. In so doing, he called into question art's emphasis on craft and the unique aura bestowed by the artist's hand.

Duchamp brought European avant-garde ideas to America when he immigrated in 1915. He later abandoned art for chess, but his methods (which also include wry, self-referential assemblages) paved the way for much of the art of the second half of the century.
\r\nRepository: San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\r\nRepository: Purchase through a gift of Phyllis Wattis\r\nAccession Number: 98.291\r\nSubject: Dada; urinals; ready-mades\r\nCollection: San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA)\r\nID Number: 25853\r\nSource: Image and original data provided by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\r\nSource: http://www.sfmoma.org/\r\nRights: © Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York / ADAGP, Paris / Estate of Marcel Duchamp\r\nRights: © 2008 Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York / ADAGP, Paris / Succession Marcel Duchamp\r\nRights: Please note that if this image is under copyright, you may need to contact one or more copyright owners for any use that is not permitted under the ARTstor Terms and Conditions of Use or not otherwise permitted by law.
