Feito Na Biblioteca is a project, funded by the Gates Foundation, to work with libraries in two Brazilian cities. This deck provides a very brief overview of the project and an update on some of the work to date. It was developed to support a report a recent meeting of TechSoup staff.
2. What is this project?
• Libraries are the center point in two Brazilian
cities for connecting constituents to open
government services, resources and data.
3. But what does that mean we are
doing?
• Working in Belo Horizonte, MG and Porto
Alegre, RS
• Building 3 apps
• Creating a guide for librarians and library staff
to curate and catalog appropriate resources in
a variety of ways (ie, in person events, online)
4. First, we held Generators.
• Two events in each city.
• Generated three areas of opportunity
• 10 distinct places where technology could be
helpful.
5.
6.
7.
8. Next, we held design events.
• One, day and a half event, in each city.
• Participants choose from the opportunities
identified at the generators.
• They designed the app page for a finished
app.

18. What else?
• We’ve been working with IPR, a great local
partner.
• Pilar Pacheco, our program officers from
Gates, attended the Belo Horizonte event.
• Ricky has presented at or attended three
different library or Federal Ministry of Culture
events.
19.
20.
21. What has been difficult?
• Holidays!
• The changing cost due to currency
fluctuations.
• Getting engaged with the municipal library
system in Belo Horizonte.
• The problems and issues people have
gravitated to are, by and large, middle class
issues.
22. What have we learned?
• Our process works, even translated into
another language and another culture.
• (Thank goodness!)
• With personal connection, people are willing
to follow the process.
• Involvement of politicians at all levels has
been crucial.
• People are enthusiastic participants in the
process.
23. So, what’s next?
• We need to turn the designs into posters,
send to libraries to get feedback.
• Engage with Brazilian developers to make the
apps.

1. Who is talking about what?

2. What can I attend at the library?

Libraries have hundreds of events each month. Library staff wants to make sure those events get to as many people as possible. Can we make a tool that allows them up describe the event once and have it appear in multiple popular places to post events? Also, can we provide a series of analytics for the events? These analytics might include:
The number of people who viewed the event across by platform, across multiple platforms?
The number of people who signed up to attend by platform, across multiple platforms?
The ways that people found the events by platform, across multiple platforms?

3. Where can I dispose of this?
As baterias?
Alguns recursos:

We all have things that have to be disposed of. Some things go to the landfill, others go to recycling. Still others have hazardous materials in them have to be disposed of in a special way. We know that but, often, we don’t know where or how to dispose of items. The batteries? The old piece of electronics? The cooking oil? Even the plastic bottle I’ve emptied while walking down the street? How can I dispose of all of that responsibly?
While it is certainly possible to use a search engine to find the answers that can be time consuming and the results can be incomplete. Can we make a tool that starts with a public list of recycling centers but allows the user to sort by the material to be recycled, the hours of operation, or proximity to a defined starting spot? Can we provide a web based tool to make it easy for the librarians to find the information or text or email certain results to the requestor?

4. Which bus stop should I wait at?
Image: http://www.mancheteonline.com.br/rodoviarios-mantem-greve-de-onibus-em-porto-alegre-2/
Considerando a sombra disponível, segurança à noite, acessibilidade.

People use bus stops all the time. But how do we decide which bus stop is best to use? Some of it is how close the bus stop is, yes, but there are other factors that are involved. Which bus stop has shade? Has a seat? Is accessible for the blind or a person in a wheel chair? Which bus stop is safest to wait at in the evening or night time? Which is nearest to a light?
This information is not likely to be available in a ready to use digital format. So the app is going to need to have different kinds of functionality.
Can we build an app that allows people to look at nearby bus stops on a given route and have an array of ways to sort the information? By available shade, by safety at night. By accessibility. Further, can the app pre-sort by certain criteria – for example, if a user is looking up a bus stop location in the day time, can it automatically sort by those that have shade? After dark, can it sort by those that are near a light and are the safest?
Also, can users put in more information about the bus stop location – for example, can they document the presence and condition of seating, of shade? Of light during the night time?

5. Where can I get help?

6. When will my trash get picked up?

Trash collection is an increasingly important issue. We want to put the trash out before the truck comes by. But not too early because then it can end up being a mess all over the city streets.
Can we build an app that lets citizens report on where the trash truck is? For example, can people take an upload a picture of the truck so that it is tagged with time an location of the truck? And, through that, build a map? Can people sign up for text messages to receive an alert when the track is in their neighborhood? As GPS is installed in trash trucks, can we use that show where the trucks are? And predict when they will be in a certain neighborhood?

8. Did my trash get picked up?

Trash trucks may sometimes miss certain neighborhoods. Is there a way to use social media to create a map of the places trash and recycling trucks do pick up and then show areas of the city that may not be receiving trash or recycling services?
Such an app would allow people to report whether or not their trash was picked up. It might compare this to published pick up schedules. The result of this data collection would show a map of areas that did not receive any trash pick up. Person looking at the map might be able to show regions that had not had trash picked up in 7 days, or 14 days, or 30 days.

8. Where can I buy local food?

We often want to support local food producers. Especially small, family farms. Can we create a map that allows someone to quickly locate the places where they can purchase locally grown food?
To do this, we will probably also need something that allows local food producers to provide the places they sell their food.

9. Where can I find an Internet connection?
Individuals often want to know where they can connect to the Internet. They want to wifi hot spots but also they want to know the environment in which it is offered. Are there tables? Could you use a laptop computer at that location? Is there a plug so they can power up their device? Is it inside or is it outside?
Can we make an app that makes it easy to update the location of Internet connections and provide additional information about them?
For the Reference Desk:
Create a spreadsheet of the kinds of things people want to know about Internet connections
Add the local libraries that have internet connections to the spreadsheet
Document any public list of Internet connections (whether official or not)
10. Where can I receive training?
People often come into the library to learn new skills so that they can be ready for a variety of jobs. While the library itself may not offer these trainings, often the librarians know exactly where they are offered. And if they don’t know themselves, they may know the librarians who has the answer. What if we collect these community resources into a single site, making it easy for the librarians to add to and search, and making it easy for them to share with others.
Such an app may really be a responsive website – easy for the librarian to use on their desktop computer or easy for a library user to save on their mobile device.
There would be a simple input form that would allow librarians to put in resources.
The display would allow a user to sort by various criteria – type of training, location (or a radius from where the user is located).
For the Reference Desk:
Create a list of categories for training class
Create a shared spreadsheet that can hold the list of training classes
Document any public lists of training classes
