Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

de roubos de bicicletas em to-
do o DF. No ano passado, foram
registradas 567 ocorrências
contra 517, em 2011. Planaltina
e Ceilândia são as cidades que
lideram o levantamento, com
91 e 81 crimes, respectivamen-
te. O Plano Piloto teve pelo me-
nos 25 casos no ano passado.
Para Philip James, da ONG
Rodas da Paz, o aumento da
criminalidade está relacionado
ao mercado ilegal de venda de
peças. “Sabemos que muitas
bicicletas são desmontadas, e
as partes vendidas ilegalmente.
O ideal seria o governo fazer
campanhas para evitar essa
prática”, observou.

O diretor da Associação Bra-
sileira dos Fabricantes de Mo-
tocicletas, Ciclomotores, Mo-
tonetas, Bicicletas e Similares
(Abraciclo), José Eduardo Gon-
çalves, explica que Brasília con-
centra um mercado de bikes
mais caras. “Devido ao alto po-
der aquisitivo da população,
muitos têm optado por equipa-
mentos feitos de materiais mais
nobres, e isso chama a atenção
de criminosos”, acredita.
O comandante do 1º Bata-
lhão de Policiamento (Área
Central), Agrício da Silva, refor-
ça a necessidade de conscienti-
zação da população. “Temos
informações de que alguns des-
ses produtos são comercializa-
dos ilegalmente em locais clan-
destinos, como a Feira do Rolo
em Ceilândia. Mas só ocorre a
venda se há ciclistas interessa-
dos em comprar”, concluiu.

para bicicleta varia entre R$ 500 e

levados em consideração no mo-
mento da avaliação realizada pe-
la empresa. O serviço funciona
de forma semelhante ao contra-
tos de carros e motos. A diferen-
ça, no entanto, é a vistoria, que é
feita pela internet, devido à falta
de oficinas especializadas cre-
denciadas no DF. O cliente inte-
ressado em contratar o produto
precisa preencher uma ficha com
todos os dados da bike, incluindo
onúmerodesérieeumacópiada
nota fiscal de compra. A modali-
dade de seguro oferece três tipos
de coberturas: roubo à mão ar-
mada, furto à residência e prejuí-
zos causados durante o transpor-
te do objeto.
Mesmo sem ter um levanta-
mento da demanda desses se-
guros no país, o representante
do Sindicato das Seguradoras
do DF (Sindseg) Carlos Caval-
cante explica que algumas lojas
especializadas na venda de bi-
kes têm oferecido a cobertura
assistida no ato da compra. “Te-
mos conhecimento dessa práti-
ca, mas não é algo comum”, dis-
se. Cavalcante destaca a possi-
bilidade de contratação de apó-
lices coletivas. “São pacotes
contratados por condomínios
residenciais que possuem bici-
cletários. Nesse caso, o produto
só cobre o prejuízo no crime
classificado como furto à resi-
dência”, declarou.
Este ano, apenas nos dois pri-
meiros meses, as ocorrências de
roubos de bicicletas no DF che-
garam a 250. Os dados contribuí-
ram para o aumento do interesse
dos ciclistas em proteger os equi-
pamentos. De acordo com sócio-
diretor de uma corretora de segu-
ros de São Paulo, Leonardo Fer-
raz, a empresa atendeu 15 brasi-
lienses no último mês. “Fiquei
surpreso com a procura, mas o
fato de a violência ter aumentado
explica a demanda de novos
clientes”, disse.
Segundo Ferraz, o produto é
oferecido há quase sete anos,
mas somente a partir de 2011 a

Demanda
O perfil dos clientes brasilien-
ses é de empresários, com idade
média de 30 anos, e que utilizam
a bike para fazer trilhas ou parti-
cipar de competições. “Geral-
mente, são bicicletas um pouco
mais caras, que custam em mé-
dia R$ 10 mil”, explica José Carlos
Anastácio Júnior, proprietário de
uma corretora de seguros.
Já a empresa de Anastácio Jú-
nior oferece o produto na moda-
lidade radical. No ano passado,
registrou crescimento de 300%
na demanda. Atualmente, o em-
presário contabiliza mil bicicle-
tas com cobertura assistida em
todo o país. Em Brasília, em 2012,
foram 120 novas solicitações. As
indenizações cresceram no mes-
mo ritmo. “Tivemos que indeni-
zar 12 clientes, sendo que um de-
les era do DF”, destaca.
O sinistro é pago depois de
comprovado o prejuízo, tal como
o furto da bicicleta, por exemplo.
DeacordocomAnastácioJúnior,a
pessoa é obrigada a apresentar à
seguradora documento no qual
comprova a perda do bem.“É se-
melhante ao processo que ocorre
no pagamento do benefício para
carros. No caso de assalto, é preci-
soregistrarocorrência”,informou.
O analista de sistema Rodney
Pimenta, 41 anos, têm seguro há
quase dois anos. O interesse em
contratar o produto surgiu de-
pois de ouvir relatos de diversos
colegas que tiveram equipamen-
tos levados por ladrões. “Têm
amigos que acham caro pagar
R$ 500 por ano para ter cobertu-
ra, mas, na minha opinião, vale a
pena. Os assaltos estão ocorren-
do com maior frequência e não
apenas em locais afastados, mas
em lugares dedicados ao lazer,
como o Parque da Cidade e o Ei-
xão (LeiaMemória)”, enumera.
Apesar de ter garantias em ca-
so de roubo, Pimenta afirma não
sesentirprotegido.“Aúnicasegu-
rança que tenho é saber que ha-
verá ressarcimento da bicicleta,
mas, fora isso, continuo na mes-
ma apreensão quando saio para
pedalar”,afirmouociclista.Atual-
