3. Advantages of sourcing images this way: An advantage of sourcing images
from a book is that the source of these images is immediately clear and
apparent. When sourcing from online internet sources, one difficulty is that the
images you find at one source, seemingly free for use, may have been taken
from a different source, which would not freely allow use of the image, which
can be a serious concern when using images for commercial usage. With
images sourced from books, the source is much more clear, physical, and
directly apparent. Having a physical source for an image can also be a more
safe way to ensure that an image can be preserved, as having a physical
source of an image can often be safer than having a digital image in some
occasions.
Disadvantages of sourcing images this way: It can often be quite difficult to
find a book source for images when you are looking for a very specific image,
especially if it is of a more niche subject that there are likely to be less books
focused on. Even if books with the images you require exist, they may be
difficult to obtain, possibly not available in local libraries, and may need to be
purchased. Therefore, compared to searching for images online, it can often be
quite difficult to find specific images, and the results are generally less
immediate.
5. Advantages of sourcing images this way: Google is one of the largest
search engines available, and therefore there is a large amount of content
readily available through usage of Google Images, and there will most likely be
images available for almost any subject one could conceive of. Google Images
also includes features which allows the user to alter and specify their search,
such as by looking for images of a specific size, colour, quality, or even images
with various copyright statuses. These features are all extremely beneficial, and
in the case of finding images for commercial usage, the latter feature is
especially so.
Disadvantages of sourcing images this way:There are some disadvantages
to using Google images as a sourcing method. One issue that can be
encountered when using Google images is that many of the images, especially
the first appearing, most popular images, are generally quite repetitive and
similar, and therefore it can make it quite difficult to find unique images of a
chosen subject. These images are also generally quite generic, and show the
image in a similar way to one another, therefore this can make it quite difficult to
find unique images, or images of certain details or angles of a subject, when
using Google Images.
8. Advantages of sourcing images this way: Sourcing images through copyright
free sites and stock image libraries is an extremely effective method of image
sourcing, especially for anyone intending to use images for commercial usage.
If an image is sourced from a copyright free site, or purchased from a stock
image library, it can be used for commercial usage and there will be no legal
copyright ramifications. Therefore, this form of image sourcing is very useful to
anyone searching for images to be used in a professional capacity.
Disadvantages of sourcing images this way: A disadvantage of sourcing
images through copyright free sites is that they are often quite limited, with only
a few images generally being available on these sites, and often it will be
difficult to find specific images on certain subjects. Equally, there are also
disadvantages to sourcing images through stock image libraries, mainly in the
sense that these images will cost money to use, and must be purchased. Often
there are different prices involved depending on the nature of the image usage,
and images used for commercial usage can often be quite expensive. This is a
notable disadvantage if you do not want to lose money when sourcing your
images.
10. Advantages of sourcing images this way: Using your own images is the
absolute most effective way to ensure that your image usage does not infringe
upon any copyright laws, as these images will be directly sourced from yourself
and therefore you will not need to receive anyone else’s permission to use
them. By using your own images, you will also not need to spend any money in
order to purchase the rights to the image, as you would with others. By using
your own images as a source, you also have the opportunity to create images of
whatever you wish, which will make it easier to get images of the subjects that
you require.
Disadvantages of sourcing images this way: A disadvantage of sourcing
images through your own images is that, potentially, your skill level with image-
capture may not be especially high, and therefore the images you create may
not be of high quality. This issue may also arise if you do not have access to
high quality image capture technology. Another potential issue is that the
subjects you require images of may not be locally available, and due to these
geographic constraints it may be extremely difficult to find these subjects and
take an image of them.
16. Advantages of different resolutions: Changing an images resolution is an
effective way of changing an images’ file size without having to change the
actual size of the image itself. This is a useful technique, especially when it
comes to creating projects and pieces that use a number of different images. By
lowering DPI of these individual images, they can maintain the same size
without having to alter the size of the actual image itself. This can help keep the
file size at a reasonable and manageable amount.
Disadvantages of different resolutions: If resolution is altered too much, it
can potentially cause negative effects, as altering the size of the pixels too
drastically may result in pixelated or low-quality images. This will bring down the
aesthetic appeal of an image, and consequently, any projects and pieces they
are included in. On the other side of the spectrum, an image with a high DPI
rating will take up a large amount of file space, which can have detrimental
effects on the speed of a computer, and the amount of space available on it.
This may become an especially serious issue if one has many images with a
high DPI rating.
17. Manipulated image with appropriate caption:
The Ca’ d’Oro is a primary example of the Italian Gothic Style architecture that is featured prominently in Venice’s
cityscape. The palace was built in the early 15th century for the prominent Contarini family, and after nearly 600
years is considered one of the oldest Venetian palaces still standing intact. The official name of the palace is
Palazzo Santa Sofia, but it has become more popularly known as the Ca’ d’Oro (or “Golden house”) due to the
fact that the palaces’ façade was originally covered with gilding.
18. Explain the changes you made to the image
and explain why you made those changes: I
edited this image by firstly cropping the original
image, in order to remove most of the peripheral
sections of the original image. This ensured that
the actual Ca’ d’Oro was the main focus of the
picture, and not the buildings on the other side of
it. After doing this, I decided to then change the
brightness and contrast levels, in order to make
the image much brighter and up the contrast of the
image. By doing this, the details of the building
were enhanced, making the brickwork and
architectural elements much more clear and
noticeable.
