2. When watching comedy, we expect to be able to
either relax and smile, laughing when a
character we grow to love does something
funny or to be on the floor crying with laughter
not being able to breath.
A comedy film should never create sadness. If
death occurs it should be done in a comical
way for example in spoofs.
The characters should have our sympathy or
have us on edge thinking oh my gosh!
Expectations of comedy
from a audience
3. This is usually an animated film often by
Disney or Pixar. These films can be with human
actors and can be labelled as Family Films.
These films are usually slapstick comedy, e.g.
Shrek, frozen and inside out.
The audience can range from 5 -12.
The film I am making will not be targeted for
this age group however slapstick comedy does
apply to most ages.
Child Comedy.
4. Spoof are very common humour styled films
intended for male audiences. This for the crude
humour. Depending on the amount of adult
humour this can effect the age rating from 15 to
18. Nowadays these films target boys 15- 24.
This type of comedy is very engaging as it
becomes almost predictable. In my film I want
to cause suspense yet comedy and appeal to
both male and female audiences.
Male Humour- Stereotype
5. This humour has subtle comedy as the typically
speaking a romantic comedy focusses on the
romance. It is mostly aimed at women however
men and family can enjoy these films. The age
group can be from 12- 40+ but typically
speaking it’s a 12+ rating.
One film I studied 10 things I hate about you is
a good example of this.
When making my film I want a strong bond to
be formed with comedy from my characters.
Rom-Com
6. I am going to create a target audience
questionnaire. I will ask for gender but not age
as I am limited to who I can ask. I will however
be asking what types of comedy people enjoy,
how they want to react, what they look for and
why.
Lastly I will ask them to select one from four
movies, animation, spoof, drama and romcom
and select what they would rather watch.
This will then be total up and give me an
indication as to what people generally enjoy.
Audience Research
9. From my research it shows how a majority of
males like to laugh out loud or simply laugh when
watching comedies and prefer slapstick and
sarcasm. This is also represented by the type of
comedy as it was ‘spoof’.
The Girls, preferred to smile when watching
comedy and preferred slapstick and sarcasm too.
Their favourite choice was between romcom and
spoof.
This will help me balance the right amount of
humour in my work. My target audience is both
men and women but considering women prefer to
smile and men to laugh my humour will be
between the two.
