• The U.S. lost more than a quarter of its high-tech
  manufacturing jobs to China and other countries
  during the last decade
• Study – More than 40% of U.S. high school students
  enter the workforce deficiently prepared for entry-
  level jobs
• The future workforce is here, and it is ill-prepared
Observations
• Over 75% of executives believe that critical thinking
  skills will become more important to their
  organizations in the next three to five years
• 81% of CEOs surveyed consider innovation to be the
  single most important factor to ensure the future
  success of their business
• Workplace readiness skills including
  communication, organization, research, group
  participation and leadership, are essential
• Workplace readiness skills are not measured by the
  National Center for Education Statistics
The Challenge
The U.S. must address the growing mismatch between
  the skills the marketplace demands and the skills the
  existing workforce has.
The Answer
Industry leaders have identified skills that are most
    valued for the 21st century workforce:

1.   The individual works alone or in small groups
2.   Confronts and resolves problems
3.   Reflects upon issues
4.   Makes judgments on next steps
5.   Shows commitment to a task

• National organization that advocates for 21st century
  readiness for every student
• P21 and its members provide tools and resources to
  help the U.S. education system keep up by fusing
  the 3Rs and 4Cs
• P21 advocates for local, state and federal policies
  that support this approach for every school
Communication
• Listen for meaning, including knowledge, values,
  attitudes and intentions
• Inform, instruct, motivate and persuade
• Appropriate used of multiple communication
  technologies
• Communicate effectively in diverse environments
Critical Thinking
• Analyze evidence, arguments, claims, beliefs, ideas
  and points of view
• Use deductive, inductive and abductive reasoning as
  appropriate
• Ask pertinent questions
• Synthesize and evaluate information

The Facts • The U.S. is competing in a global economy • The U.S. lost more than a quarter of its high-tech manufacturing jobs to China and other countries during the last decade • Study – More than 40% of U.S. high school students enter the workforce deficiently prepared for entry- level jobs • The future workforce is here, and it is ill-prepared
  • 4. Observations • Over 75% of executives believe that critical thinking skills will become more important to their organizations in the next three to five years • 81% of CEOs surveyed consider innovation to be the single most important factor to ensure the future success of their business • Workplace readiness skills including communication, organization, research, group participation and leadership, are essential • Workplace readiness skills are not measured by the National Center for Education Statistics
  • 5. The Challenge The U.S. must address the growing mismatch between the skills the marketplace demands and the skills the existing workforce has.
  • 6. The Answer Industry leaders have identified skills that are most valued for the 21st century workforce: 1. The individual works alone or in small groups 2. Confronts and resolves problems 3. Reflects upon issues 4. Makes judgments on next steps 5. Shows commitment to a task

The Hybrid Teacher • Has a blend of industry and education experience • Inculcates real world relevance into the curriculum • Inspires students to achieve excellence • As facilitator, provides access to information rather than being the source of information • Provides an environment (The 4 Cs) for innovation • Promotes compassion, empathy, humility and respect for all things and all people

Partnership for 21st Century Skills • National organization that advocates for 21st century readiness for every student • P21 and its members provide tools and resources to help the U.S. education system keep up by fusing the 3Rs and 4Cs • P21 advocates for local, state and federal policies that support this approach for every school
  • 13. Communication • Listen for meaning, including knowledge, values, attitudes and intentions • Inform, instruct, motivate and persuade • Appropriate used of multiple communication technologies • Communicate effectively in diverse environments
  • 14. Critical Thinking • Analyze evidence, arguments, claims, beliefs, ideas and points of view • Use deductive, inductive and abductive reasoning as appropriate • Ask pertinent questions • Synthesize and evaluate information • Make judgments and decisions • Solve problems in both conventional and innovative ways
  • 15. Collaboration • Work effectively and respectfully with others • Share information • Be willing to negotiate and compromise to accomplish a common goal • Share responsibility and accountability for collaborative work • Value individual contributions made by each team member
