Defining Civic and Social Responsibility
In a recent article concerning corporate social responsibility, it reveals; "a survey conducted by and
BEYOND Communications Inc. shows big changes in how CEOs reported on corporate social
responsibilities." (Go figure – corporate social responsibility, (2005). The point of view is changing
within the corporation world. CEOs are now taking note that this needs to be incorporated into the
corporate structure and is a significant strategic item.
So what is the meaning behind civic and social responsibility? In the business frame of mind, it
can have different meanings depending on the person you are speaking too. When asking an
engineer or executive from the 50's and 60's civic and social responsible was viewed differently and
acted upon differently as the priority may have been building and developing towns and cities
looking at the future.
Today, the same dedication may not be the same or the outlook may be entirely different. It may be
one of maintenance or re–engineering a project that is twenty years old. Such example would be the
bridges that are in need of attention and required new structures to maintain the integrity of the
structure. A group of students and professionals took this to a new level by creating a real–life
opportunity and turned it into a competition that had an amazing outcome.

Our main goal for this project was to develop an understanding of homelessness (for students,)
including the reasons for the increase in homelessness over the past decades and the policy tools that
exist to end homelessness. We wanted to foster empathy and a sense of justice within the youth

Every citizen should volunteer at an organization or help someone in need. They should also do
fundraising for a cause. And if there is a problem in the community they should do community
problem solving. As US citizens they have the responsibility to provide good example for the

Reevaluation
At the beginning of this course I wasn't sure what was meant by social responsibility and civic
engagement. During this course I realized the meaning of both and the responsibilities that both
imply. A definition of social responsibility that I found particularly poignant and concise comes from
Entrepreneur Magazine, "Acting with concern and sensitivity, aware of the impact of your actions

I grew up in an environment where I was sensitive to the needs of those immediately around me;
my family, my neighbors, my classmates but my world was a very narrow one. This course has
taught be to look at the world as my neighbors and feel a responsibility to the health, safety and
welfare of all. I used to believe there was nothing I could do about the famine in Africa or the
genocide in Croatia but I now realize that ANY small step I take is a step toward a path leading to
action and understanding. One of my closest friends is a Major in the U.S. Army and she has
been to Croatia, Iraq and Afghanistan; I am blessed to have her in my life because through her
eyes and her stories, I am more in touch with the trials of our modern day world. "Lao Tzu said,

My opinions on specific topics have also evolved throughout this course. For example: my group
project group chose to tackle the issue of capital punishment. "What goes around comes around. Or
does it? I believe my awareness of this issue started when the five of us decided which side, pro or
con, we were going to speak for. Originally we had four for pro and only one for con. Well, this was
not going to be a balanced paper obviously so I said I would join the con side. Therefore, I had to
research a view that I previously had discounted.

The Importance Of Civic Education
In an era of political depression and high voter suppression, civic education is critical for the
advancement of the United States. A civil society is rooted in civic education. Stated directly in the
declaration of independence is the three unalienable rights the government cannot strip you of: life,
liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In a civil society, the utmost concern of the government is
happiness and common good of the public. The government can only do so much for it's people;

This course has made me well versed in the teaching modules needed to become an effective teacher

As young American adults turn eighteen, they are reminded that it is their civic duty and
responsibility to register to vote, to be aware of the current policies and to make educated decisions
in the voting booth. As some of these young adults become active in the nursing profession, they are
taught that their ultimate responsibility is to advocate for their patients; they are to ensure their
safety and well–being. That being said, does this responsibility stop at the bedside? Should nurses
take an active role in the policy making that directly affects the healthcare of their patients? Conn
and Armer (2012) stated that "nurses must be prepared to use multiple and varied strategies to
influence public policy so that optimal health outcomes can be achieved" (p. 296). This statement
alone implies that nursing's responsibility extends beyond direct patient care. Unfortunately,
today's nurses have not been educated to view themselves as "policy development activists"
(Wolf & Robinson, 2013, p. 16). In light of this statement, I took a "Political Astuteness
Inventory" and was quite surprised at my score, for I could only honestly check mark 17 of the 34
statements. My 17 checkmarks are clustered mainly around my civic duty of registering to vote as
well as making decisions and working collaboratively in my workplace. I do not actively participate

Civics is a Grade 10 course where students learn about our political system, how public decisions
are made, and the entitled rights and responsibility for a citizen who legally belongs to a country.
In a course like civics, students critically investigate local, national, and worldwide issues with a
political perspective. One aspect of the curriculum is personal action on civic issues, by which
means students are to analyze a civic issue and develop an action plan to address it. Through this,
our class worked with an organization named DILA (A Day of Information for a Lifetime of Action),
an organization that aims towards engaging youth in Ottawa by encouraging hands–on engagement
in their communities, addressing civic issues that individuals are passionate towards, and to increase
the importance of the democratic decision–making process. A DILA project main objective is to
simply empower the young millennials, by giving them a chance to let their ideas, imagination,

Community life and civic engagement are a huge responsibility of citizens, although it is not
required by citizens, it is an important aspect of a proper citizen. Residents of a community have
the constant responsibility of making the society around them reflect an advance in the eminence
of lives in the community. The simple duty of any citizen is to give to the common good. Civic
responsibilities are achieved by volunteering and choice. Volunteering, involving in positive
organizations and aids, or tutoring people in certain subjects, are all ways that people can
subsidize to the good of the community. Small deeds that seem to prosper someone in some way
or the other is still a way of helping. To learn something from the assistance that one does to
another, the deed does not have to be big, as long as the person providing the assistance is doing it

helping others. When people have the opportunity to help others they may not always get a gift in
return, sometimes they may not even get a reply back. This is when the person has to realize that
the purpose of helping someone is not for the thank you or the gift, but is for the satisfaction of

any knowledge about the information the candidate is giving. Some even believe that is not a civic

Civic Responsibility Project
For my Civic Responsibility Project, I chose to volunteer at Paws Humane, a non–profit organization
in Columbus that provides shelter for homeless pets and aides in placing them with a fit owner.
Paws rescues captured strays from Animal Control and accepts owner–surrendered animals. The
accepted animals range from dogs and cats of all ages to small critters, such as rabbits. Paws has a
no–kill policy, so the animals not adopted remain at the shelter until they finally find a home.
Unfortunately, some animals remain at the shelter longer than others; some have been at the shelter

The process is very organized and easy to learn. My volunteer time is not scheduled; I could come
and go as I please as long as they were open. This was perfect for me because I have a very busy
schedule and could squeeze in volunteer time when I could. Tasks are not assigned, so I could go
in and do what I want. Many of the dogs that I visited were extremely sweet and just wanted
someone to love on them. I loved going into their room or area to sit and cuddle with them. Many
enjoyed having a long belly rub, and some took naps in my lap. Other dogs were really excited to
get out and play, and I enjoyed throwing the tennis ball around in the play yard for them. There is
a short trail through the woods in front of the building, and most of the dogs love walking up and
down it, so I would take them through there, too. I went to Paws one day and brought one of the
running buddy dogs, Belle, to campus during lunch hour. My friends enjoyed playing with her,
and she loved being out of the building in a new place. We took a walk around campus, and when
I took her back to Paws, she was exhausted but so happy from all the fun she had. Another great
