FOCUS : YEAR 3 / LISTENING SKILL ( 20 ITEMS )
LISTENING SKILL 1 ( 8 ITEMS )

Look at the picture carefully.
Listen to text . Then, tick out ‘True’ or ‘False’ to the statements given below.
I am Ahmad. I study in Year 3 Pintar. I would like to share my daily routines. On every
Monday, I go to the library to read books. Sometimes, my friends join me to be there
too.
Every day, I always go to the school canteen to eat with my friends during recess
time. We always be together because we can share the same hobbies and stories
and play a game such as Hopscotch at the badminton court.
I have a hobby. It is singing. Every Tuesday, I go for my singing class and learn to
sing from a music teacher. The teacher says that my singing is very nice.
I love my daily activities very much.

REPORT OF ITEMS 1-8 ( LISTENING SKILL 1 )
These 8 items are focusing on listening skill and they are constructed to assess the
students’ ability toward listening to the text carefully and then demonstrate their
understanding of oral texts by giving True/False replies. Actually, these items are
under the band of Band 3 according to the Domen Standard Prestasi ( DSP ).This
skill is noted in the DSK ( Dokumen Standard Kandungan Bahasa Inggeris Tahun 3 )
too. In conducting this assessment, the teacher needs to read the text clearly without
any distracters and unnecessary pauses in order to ensure that the students are able
to listen to the text clearly. Besides that, at the same time, the students will be given
a piece of paper which contains tables ( number of the items and the True/False
columns ) and a piece of paper contains of a picture series of World of Self, Family
and Friends. They need to look at the picture series carefully before listening to the
text. So that, the students will be able to tick in the correct columns pertaining to the
text read by the teacher.
In order to get a better or good response or answers, the teacher is required to read
out the text with the clearest pronunciation and in a suitable speed. Each of the
statements need to be read one by one to let the students manage to recall what
they have listened to.
By looking at the first item, the words ‘studies’ and ‘3 Pintar’ would be the keywords
to recall their listening. That is why I choose the first item in this assessment. The
second item is using ‘goes’, ‘library’ and ‘Tuesday’ as the keywords and it would give
the better recall to give the correct response. The third and fourth items are using the
words ‘likes’ and ‘does not like’ as the tricky part to let the students think critically.
This is one of the way to test their attention or focus toward the teacher’s reading.
The fifth item is replacing the name of game that Ahmad always play with his friends
during recess time. It is still back the core or main business of this assessment,
which are focus and concentration are very needed and important to make it
successful. The sixth item is just the same with the first item which is replacing the
words accordingly. The seventh item is a bit easy or moderate for them because
they would be able to recall it by capturing out the word ‘hobby’ as the keyword.

3
The climax of this assessment is in the eighth item which is the word ‘alone’ needs
to be proved by making their generalization about Ahmad referring to the text read
by the teacher. After listening the text, the students have to capture the daily routines
of Ahmad and then think of the best word to describe him.
In conclusion, items 1 to 8 are used to test their listening skill appropriately and their
ability to demonstrate of what they understand from the text read too. In other words,
these items are suitable to each of the students because the first to seventh items
are a bit easy or moderate while the last item is a bit tricky which needs them to think
out of the box ( think critically ).

4
LISTENING SKILL 2 ( 8 ITEMS )

Look at the picture.
Listen to the text read by the teacher carefully. Then, circle out the correct
animals or objects according to the locations of them stated in the text.

No.

Statements

1.

The lion is resting on a big tree.

2.

There is an elephant behind the truck.

3.

The bus is going up to the hill.

4.

There is a cat beside the big rock.

5.

There is a big hippopotamus in the pit.

6.

The ostrich is standing in front of the truck.

7.

The visitors are sitting under the truck.

8.

True

False

All the animals and people are at a jungle.

REPORT OF ITEMS 1-8 ( LISTENING SKILL 2 )
5
These 8 items are focusing on listening skill which are conducted or used to assess
the students’ ability in listening purposely and accurately. On the other hand, they
need to demonstrate their understanding to what they have listened to and give
response by giving response to the True/False statements given by the teacher.
These items are under the Band of 3 ( B3 ) which is testing the students ability to
identify the location based on the statements read by the teacher. But, first of all, the
students will be given a piece of paper contains of pictures of animals, people and
things at a mini zoo. All the things needed are their concentration and alert to the
statements and the pictures as well. The teacher will read out the statements one by
one and they need to recall and relate the keywords captured from the statements
read. Then, the students are required to response to the ‘True/False’ items correctly
and appropriately.
By looking at the first to the eighth items, prepositions are used to let the students
identify the location of the animals, people and things found from the picture and at
the same time, it is related to the text read too. The main thing is, they need to know
and understand the prepositions as well such as ‘in’, ‘on’, ‘under’, ‘at’, ‘behind’, ‘in
front of’, ‘up’, ‘opposite’, ‘near’ and ‘nearby’.
The climax of this assessment can be seen when the students try to response to the
eighth item which needs them to think and guess where is the situation takes place.
So, to get the idea of the statement, the students have to identify the different
between ‘jungle’ and ‘zoo’ themselves. The beginner would simply think that it is in a
jungle because they can see the trees and animals in the picture but for those who
are advance, they would be able to identify and know that it is impossible to see a
truck with some people inside it, moving in a jungle. So, they would think that the
best place is ‘Mini Zoo’.
In conclusion, these 8 items are suitable for my students who comes from different
level of abilities.

6
LISTENING SKILL 3 ( 4 ITEMS )

Look at the picture. Then, listen to the text read by the teacher carefully.
Draw the route based on the directions noted from the text read.
Ali is at the science laboratory. He wants to go to the field for his next subject. So,
from the science laboratory, he needs to go straight along the corridor. Then, turn
left. Next, he needs to go straight and he will see the field is on his right.
Half and hour later, Ali wants to go to art room. So, he needs to go straight until
he sees the mini garden on his left, near the canteen. Then, he will see the art
room beside the mini garden.
After having his Arts lesson, he needs to go to the library to read some books for
one hour. And, the library is just next to the Art Room. So, he will turn right after
going out from the Art Room as well.
Lastly, it is the time for having recess hour. So, Ali will turn left after going out
from the library and then go straight along the corridor. Then, he will turn right
until he sees the mini garden on his right. He will walk through the mini garden
until he reaches the canteen.

7
REPORT OF ITEMS 1-4 ( LISTENING SKILL 3 )
This assessment is a bit tricky because at the same time, the students need to use 4
different colour pencils. Firstly, the teacher needs to distribute a piece of paper
contains of a route map with the buildings pictures too. Then, the teacher will read
out the sentences clearly. The most important thing is, the students are required to
listen and follow the instructions or sentences read. The students need to draw the
route of directions pertaining to what they have heard or listened to.
The first route is regarding the direction of Ali, who will be going to the field from the
Science Laboratory. So, the students would draw the line ( using blue colour pencil )
which is starting from the Science Laboratory leading to the field.
The second route is referring to the direction from the field to the Art Room. They
need to draw the line or route ( using red colour pencil ) for Ali to reach the room.
Unforgotten, they have to recall the keywords which are noted in the text or
sentences too such as ‘right’, ‘left’, ‘turn right’, ‘turn left’, ‘go straight’, ‘along’ and etc.
All these words are very helpful for them to enable Ali to reach the next location or
places.
The third route is pertaining to the direction for Ali to go to the library. This is where
the students need to draw the line of direction ( using green colour pencil ) heading
to the library correctly according to what they have listened to.
The last destination is to the canteen where Ali wants to eat during recess hour. So,
they need to draw the line ( using purple colour pencil ) from the previous location or
place to the last destination.
In conclusion, this assessment is a bit easy because the picture or route map itself is
the guidance for them to be able to draw the route lines. Besides that, the above
items ( 4 items/route lines ) are familiar to them which is a bit similar to their school
surroundings too. The most important target is they would be able to listen, follow
and draw the directions accordingly.

They need to look at the picture series carefully before listening to the text. So that, the students will be able to tick in the correct columns pertaining to the text read by the teacher. In order to get a better or good response or answers, the teacher is required to read out the text with the clearest pronunciation and in a suitable speed. Each of the statements need to be read one by one to let the students manage to recall what they have listened to. By looking at the first item, the words ‘studies’ and ‘3 Pintar’ would be the keywords to recall their listening. That is why I choose the first item in this assessment. The second item is using ‘goes’, ‘library’ and ‘Tuesday’ as the keywords and it would give the better recall to give the correct response. The third and fourth items are using the words ‘likes’ and ‘does not like’ as the tricky part to let the students think critically. This is one of the way to test their attention or focus toward the teacher’s reading. The fifth item is replacing the name of game that Ahmad always play with his friends during recess time. It is still back the core or main business of this assessment, which are focus and concentration are very needed and important to make it successful. The sixth item is just the same with the first item which is replacing the words accordingly. The seventh item is a bit easy or moderate for them because they would be able to recall it by capturing out the word ‘hobby’ as the keyword. 3
  • 4. The climax of this assessment is in the eighth item which is the word ‘alone’ needs to be proved by making their generalization about Ahmad referring to the text read by the teacher. After listening the text, the students have to capture the daily routines of Ahmad and then think of the best word to describe him. In conclusion, items 1 to 8 are used to test their listening skill appropriately and their ability to demonstrate of what they understand from the text read too. In other words, these items are suitable to each of the students because the first to seventh items are a bit easy or moderate while the last item is a bit tricky which needs them to think out of the box ( think critically ). 4
  • 5. LISTENING SKILL 2 ( 8 ITEMS ) Look at the picture. Listen to the text read by the teacher carefully. Then, circle out the correct animals or objects according to the locations of them stated in the text. No. Statements 1. 8. True False All the animals and people are at a jungle. REPORT OF ITEMS 1-8 ( LISTENING SKILL 2 ) 5
  • 6. These 8 items are focusing on listening skill which are conducted or used to assess the students’ ability in listening purposely and accurately. On the other hand, they need to demonstrate their understanding to what they have listened to and give response by giving response to the True/False statements given by the teacher. These items are under the Band of 3 ( B3 ) which is testing the students ability to identify the location based on the statements read by the teacher. But, first of all, the students will be given a piece of paper contains of pictures of animals, people and things at a mini zoo. All the things needed are their concentration and alert to the statements and the pictures as well. The teacher will read out the statements one by one and they need to recall and relate the keywords captured from the statements read. Then, the students are required to response to the ‘True/False’ items correctly and appropriately. By looking at the first to the eighth items, prepositions are used to let the students identify the location of the animals, people and things found from the picture and at the same time, it is related to the text read too. The main thing is, they need to know and understand the prepositions as well such as ‘in’, ‘on’, ‘under’, ‘at’, ‘behind’, ‘in front of’, ‘up’, ‘opposite’, ‘near’ and ‘nearby’. The climax of this assessment can be seen when the students try to response to the eighth item which needs them to think and guess where is the situation takes place. So, to get the idea of the statement, the students have to identify the different between ‘jungle’ and ‘zoo’ themselves. The beginner would simply think that it is in a jungle because they can see the trees and animals in the picture but for those who are advance, they would be able to identify and know that it is impossible to see a truck with some people inside it, moving in a jungle. So, they would think that the best place is ‘Mini Zoo’. In conclusion, these 8 items are suitable for my students who comes from different level of abilities. 6
  • 7. LISTENING SKILL 3 ( 4 ITEMS ) Look at the picture. Then, listen to the text read by the teacher carefully. Draw the route based on the directions noted from the text read. Ali is at the science laboratory. He wants to go to the field for his next subject. So, from the science laboratory, he needs to go straight along the corridor. Then, turn left. Next, he needs to go straight and he will see the field is on his right. Half and hour later, Ali wants to go to art room. So, he needs to go straight until he sees the mini garden on his left, near the canteen. Then, he will see the art room beside the mini garden. After having his Arts lesson, he needs to go to the library to read some books for one hour. And, the library is just next to the Art Room. So, he will turn right after going out from the Art Room as well. Lastly, it is the time for having recess hour. So, Ali will turn left after going out from the library and then go straight along the corridor. Then, he will turn right until he sees the mini garden on his right. He will walk through the mini garden until he reaches the canteen. 7
  • 8. REPORT OF ITEMS 1-4 ( LISTENING SKILL 3 ) This assessment is a bit tricky because at the same time, the students need to use 4 different colour pencils. Firstly, the teacher needs to distribute a piece of paper contains of a route map with the buildings pictures too. Then, the teacher will read out the sentences clearly. The most important thing is, the students are required to listen and follow the instructions or sentences read. The students need to draw the route of directions pertaining to what they have heard or listened to. The first route is regarding the direction of Ali, who will be going to the field from the Science Laboratory. So, the students would draw the line ( using blue colour pencil ) which is starting from the Science Laboratory leading to the field. The second route is referring to the direction from the field to the Art Room. They need to draw the line or route ( using red colour pencil ) for Ali to reach the room. Unforgotten, they have to recall the keywords which are noted in the text or sentences too such as ‘right’, ‘left’, ‘turn right’, ‘turn left’, ‘go straight’, ‘along’ and etc. All these words are very helpful for them to enable Ali to reach the next location or places. The third route is pertaining to the direction for Ali to go to the library. This is where the students need to draw the line of direction ( using green colour pencil ) heading to the library correctly according to what they have listened to. The last destination is to the canteen where Ali wants to eat during recess hour. So, they need to draw the line ( using purple colour pencil ) from the previous location or place to the last destination. In conclusion, this assessment is a bit easy because the picture or route map itself is the guidance for them to be able to draw the route lines. Besides that, the above items ( 4 items/route lines ) are familiar to them which is a bit similar to their school surroundings too. The most important target is they would be able to listen, follow and draw the directions accordingly. 8
