2. Role of Text
• The text element is very important in
multimedia title as it conveys descriptive
information.
• In some cases, textual information are
substitutes to audio.

• Written text came into use about ~6000 years
ago
– Mesopotamia, Egypt, Sumeria, Babylonia
• Initially text were written in symbols

4. Terminology about Text
• Typeface
– A family of similar characters that may include
many sizes and styles
• Point: The font size is usually measured in
point (1 point = 1/72 of an inch)
• Leading: The space between line of text
• Kerning: spaces between two character

8. Typeface
• Serif
– Serif type has extra stroke at certain points on letters
– Serif fonts are considered to be more readable on
printed page
– Example: Times, New Century Schoolbook
• Sans Serif
– Sans serif type does not have those extra strokes
– Sans serif fonts are usually more readable on
computer
– Example: Arial, Century Gothic

• Monospace
– Every character occupies the same amount of
space horizontally regardless of its shape
• Propotional
– The space each letter occupies depends on the
width of the letter shape

11. Guidelines for Text
• Avoid huge amount of text
• Use familiar fonts which can be supported by
playback system
• Use font size 10 – 14 (recommended)
• Use serif and/or san serif
• Color of the font should contrast with
background

• Consider the use of scrollbar
• Consider the use of hyperlinks
• Segment it into small fragments
