BYOD stands for “Bring Your Own Device.” and is sometimes referred to as “Bring Your Own Technology” or BYOT.BYOD is an initiative that allows students with personal technology devices to bring them to school to use them for educational purposes under the direction of a teacher or administrator. For our purposes, the Device in BYOD, means a privately owned wireless and/or portable electronic piece of equipment that includes laptops, netbooks, tablets/slates, iPod Touches, and smart phones.
Students live in a world where they have access to information whenever and wherever they need it.Many students already have personally owned technology sitting unused (unused for education anyway) in their pockets.Students are using devices that they are already familiar with.Allows for them to have a personalized learning environment. Can be used for differentiated instruction, formative assessment, on demand research for projects and more.
BYOD Model requires less control and less filtering to allow varying devices to be useful for educational purposes using the site’s network
does the wireless network at the site allow for the necessary number of connections?, is it fast enough? does it reach all areas of the site? is there cloud space available (sharing, collaboration, storage, etc.) for the students to work on and house their works (digital locker, collaborative digital workspace); will require a large investment for the infrastructure (where will the money come from?)
develop/implement acceptable use policies (behavior problem as opposed to a tech problem), educate on user responsibility and the burden of the user to cover data fees
Schools will not have the ability to pay for software licenses for user owned hardware - must focus on free or license free resources
Have backup devices available in case students do not have access, left at home, it isn’t working, etc.
Security - who is accessing the network when and why - make a personal identification number (PIN) mandatory for access; create a separate segmented student network that only allows access to the internet, not internal networks
who pays? Most BYOD policies consider it a parent cost, but not all parents can afford a device for the child, one answer is making sharing acceptable; use platform independent tools so that work on all devices
identify and train 15% to be dedicated champions - culture change is bottom up not top down, have them provide demos and train other teachers
Privacy, cyberbullying, sexting, en loco parentis
2 FOLDS do not have to EQUIP every student, DEVICE is student OWNED so a district does not have to troubleshoot/maintain the device = GENERATING FURTHER SAVINGS
