4. Seas are home to a wide variety of marine life and contain
ecosystems essential for people on our planet. They are also an
important source of food, raw material, medicine, energy and are
used as global waterways for trade.
5. Marine ecosystems provide us services, such as climate
regulation, sea food, or leisure activities like diving and
whale watching.
6. We need to respect the ecological boundaries of Europe’s
seas if we want to continue enjoying the benefits we receive.
Hans Bruyninckx, Executive Director
European Environment Agency
Being part of the European natural capital, their protection
and exploitation require a large approach.
7. The main threat to the Black Sea, which is also the most
serious environmental problem, is the chemical,
radioactive, solid waste pollution and also biological,
produced by living invasive marine organisms.
THE BLACK SEA
8. Romania has joined the STRATEGIC ACTION PLAN FOR THE
REHABILITATION AND PROTECTION OF THE BLACK SEA, which
aims at reducing pollution, managing living resources and sustainable
development.
Some conclusions made by specialists over the years:
a tendency to mitigate land-based sources of pollution;
diminishing algal blooms in all states on the Black Sea coast;
recurrence of species considered completely missing;
slowly restoring small pelagic fish stocks;
mitigating the effects of the jellyfish by invasion of other exotic species.
9. The protection of the Black Sea coast will be achieved through a
project that includes a wide range of engineering works on a 7.3 km
stretch of beach. This will help to reduce the effects of erosion
by building new dams and barriers to keep the sand.
Beneficiaries will be 278,000 locals and 32,000 tourists visiting this
area annually.
10. The MARINA Project brought together
14 countries across Europe through the NGO Mare
Nostrum. Participants in the Mobilization and
Mutual Learning Workshops have used interactive
methods to create a beneficial framework for
knowledge sharing, good practice and solutions to
the major challenges faced by the seas.
11. organizing a working group in 2017 and tackling the problem
of marine waste. An online platform has been launched to
effectively integrate citizens' ideas;
the involvement of 35 teachers and 500 students in the
COASTWATCH activity and identifying the categories of waste
from 39 locations on the Romanian seaside;
photo-identification of 102 cetaceans with the participation of
12 volunteers.

12. The Conservation and protection of the Black Sea through
establishment of new Marine Protected Areas was developed in
the project framework. The overall goal of this one is to support
efforts to restore the environmental quality of the Black Sea.
Responsible entity in Romania - National Institute for Marine
Research and Development from Constanta.
13. Another protection measure consisted in a Convention against
Pollution, signed by all Black Sea coastal states. Agreements
have been concluded, programs and projects have been
proposed, numerous activities for which national and
international investors have been found. It has adopted a
fishing policy establishing the periods of prohibition and the
minimum size of fish that can be captured.
14. Intensive fishing, pollution and mitigation of food supplies by
reducing fish stocks have affected cetaceans.
The European Union co-funded a "Black Sea Dolphin
Protection Plan" as part of a partnership program with
public, private, scientific, educational, national and
international institutions.
15. The Black Sea including its fragile and vulnerable
ecosystem, aesthetic and recreational values, represents
a precious inheritance to be protected, preserved and
restored, the ultimate aim being to maintain its
biodiversity for the future generations.
