The Higher Education Academy (HEA) champions excellence
in learning and teaching in higher education. We are
committed
to improving the student learning experience by raising the
status of teaching, adding to the body of knowledge relating
to
pedagogy, enhancing professional teaching practice, and
facilitating networks and communities of practice. We work in
partnership with institutions, student bodies, academic and
professional staff , and sector agencies and funders.

The HEA has launched its new Strategic Plan, which will take the organisation through to 2016This is a dynamic strategy that we will regularly review so that we remain flexible and proactive in meeting the needs of the higher education community, and in developing new business at home and internationally.As champions of excellence in learning and teaching, and as a national body for enhancing learning and teaching in higher education throughout the UK, our strategic priorities directly reflect that sentiment:to inspire and support effective practice in learning and teaching; to recognise, reward and accredit excellent teaching; to influence policy, future thinking and change; to develop an effective, sustainable organisation that is relevant to, and valued by, higher education
  3. The workshop and seminar series aim to promote research and evidence that has informed HEI practice. Funded by HEAHEIs are invited to put in a proposal to one of the calls and these go through a review process. Todays seminar fits within the thematic area of assessment and feedback.There are also seminars being held on the topic of retention and success and internationalization. The discipline areas of the HEA are also holding seminars are these is currently an ongoing call for theseDetails of all the seminars and the call are on the website
  4. The thematic workshop and seminar series aims to promote research and evidence that has informed departmental and institutional policy and practice. Funded by HEA, via an open call. Four workshops and seminars still to be held this year: Assessment & Feedback – Staffordshire University (23 April) and Middlesex University (1 May); Retention & Success – University of Essex (12 April) and University of East London (16 April) – see website for further details.The discipline areas of the HEA are also holding seminars are these is currently an ongoing call for theseDetails of all the seminars and the call are on the websiteThis year £1.5 million of funding was made available for individual, departmental and collaborative teaching development grants. This bid-based development grant funding exists to stimulate evidence-based research and encourage innovations in learning and teaching that have the potential for sector-wide impact.The HEA’s new UK travel fund will enable staff and students in UK higher education to exchange and disseminate good practice in learning, teaching and assessment and engage with their peers. The funding may be used to help the applicant(s) attend conferences, network meetings and special interest groups that are being run in the UK. The event should be aligned with one of the Academies seven themes (Assessment & Feedback, Retention & Success, Internationalisation, Flexible Learning, Education for Sustainable Development, Reward & Recognition, Employability) and have a positive impact on the sector.The Higher Education Academy (HEA) is building a community of Academic Associates to deliver and develop support for learning and teaching in higher education.Expressions of interest are sought from academics with current experience, who are leaders in their field, can work as part of a team, and who share the HEA's ambition to improve learning and teaching and the student learning experience.
  5. Full details of seminar series availableExternal examiner conference: organised jointly with the QAA. This will disseminate the new QAA guidance for external examiners within the UK Quality Code for Higher Education, and also the HEA external examiners handbook. Participants will be able to explore the new QAA and HEA guidance and consider the impact on their practice. Interactive workshops will cover:1. Roles and responsibilities: 2. Induction & Mentoring3. External examiner reports - the student perspective4. External examiner reports - the institutional perspective. Aimed at; Academics who are experienced, recently appointed and aspiring external examiners;other academics involved in the external examiner process; staff development personnel involved with the training of external examiners. No charge to attend. The title for the 8th Annual Conference of the Higher Education Academy is “Great Expectations – are you ready?”. Andwill be held on 3-4 July in Manchester.
