Typical introductions
The timing of this event was very interesting to us as we recently added the MSc in Health Data Science to the portfolio of courses provided by the College of Medicine at Swansea University.
Answering questions on where do our students come from and where do they go after our “educational interventions” have been receiving much of our attention for the last few years.
In the next 20 minutes or so, we are going to briefly review the scope of the eHealth environment by a set of illustrative examples.
We are also going to take a look at the specific roles and tasks undertaken by people who are involved with health informatics and analytics specifically.
We are then going to have a closer look at some of the current career pathway options and conclude with Swansea University’s response to the challenges of this dynamic environment.
Modern computing technology has eroded the boundaries between hardware and software improving the integration of technology with day to day operations.
A key element in improving efficiency and maintaining data validity is Electronic Health Records. A number of international standards in active development at the moment appear in this slide and there is an ongoing effort globally to move towards electronic health records with an impact on national strategies and the private sector as well.
At the national level, the recent economic downturn has highlighted the need for (even) more efficiency and the benefits of predictive rather than preventive healthcare. Some of the underpinning operations from this domain appear on this slide already.
On a similar track are Information Linkage Projects such as SAIL, the ADRN and Care.data. These projects aim at linking various diverse sources of healthcare information and offering them to researchers as one unified resource through a well defined framework that ensures privacy and security. Such projects, making use of routinely collected data for secondary purposes are only now starting to emerge in order to mine the huge volumes of already collected data for useful information.
Finally, a representative project bringing together cutting edge research combining health data analysis and modelling is the EU’s VPH. Creating a complete functional mathematical model of the human body is an ambitious project that is extremely interesting to Pharmaceutical companies.
At the same time, an equally large amount of research and commercial activity is ongoing in the field of medical devices. (Brief description of the domain but not main focus of this particular presentation).

So, here are the key points emerging from this brief overview of eHealth.
It is a multidisciplinary domain, in constant flux under the forces of national policies and technological development and a very fertile ground for innovation, whether this means research or commercial development for a mass market of people who are interested in managing their own health.
(There is a future in this domain that comes in many different shapes and sizes)
Briefly explain the general model with the key roles and their interactions
(What do people do in such positions?)
Briefly explain the world of the health data scientist but make it more broader to include the health informatics elements as well.
Briefly explain where do graduates “come from” and where are they likely to go...this is the current “state of the art”, it doesn’t necessarily have to stay like this in the future (...see next slide)
From the general (in the previous slide) to the specific (in this slide), the HICF is an excellent tool at mapping career targets and planning career development.
With these considerations in mind, we have put together a number of courses at Swansea University (the highlights of which are our two MScs on this slide) to prepare candidates for the challenges involved in a career in eHealth.
