2. Script
• The script of the play would be something that closely
resembles what William Inge intended and portrays
naturalism as in the audience can really buy into the play and
understand the humor, the seriousness and the overall
thoughts each character has without having to infer. The
language of the script again would be the same type of
language and modern English used in the 1950’s.

4. Design Elements
• Spine of the play: The spine or what holds the play together
from a directorial stand point should be the acting. Since this
play is written in a way that makes it feel dated, the actors in
the play need to act and portray both the mind set and
comedy that was alive and kicking during the 1950’s. This play
isn’t something Shakespeare wrote or even something Arthur
Miller wrote, it’s in its own category. With that being said the
actors need to really be in character and avoid all portrayals of
themselves as individuals or of anything that resembles a time
period past the 1950’s.
• Theme-Loneliness/isolation
5. Style to illuminate spine
• The style I would take to illuminate the spine (loneliness and
isolation) would be to take make sure the characters are
always isolated from others at the restaurant when they have
their solo parts, this way even though they are all in the same
restaurant all the attention will be on solely them, thus
making it seem like they are the only ones that can hear
themselves making it seem like they are lonely.
6. Directorial Concept
• I would direct this play in a way that portrays naturalism this
way it could really just look and feel like the 1950’s. For the
casting I would select a typecasting that represents characters
that play someone who they closely resemble in real life.
